Yeah, a little early here, but I've been told snow is on the way and I knocked off half the todo board this morning.  Gotta save some for next week right?  Think I'll call the nurse and have her put some bourbon on ice for me.

Let me tell you about a third kind of person...

I took a year off between high school and college. Finding jobs in the teeth of a recession was hard; if you found one, you held onto it grimly.

One of those jobs was a dishwashing gig in a steakhouse. The kitchen was run by Bobby—an angry, manipulative alcoholic who would spew abuse when things got crazy during the dinner crush. The only to survive was to keep your head down and jump when he wanted something.

For the most part, Bobby was a good guy under a lot of pressure who'd given up drinking. He admitted he could be an asshole and that he missed alcohol. "I'm a pretty mellow drunk, but if you see me drinking gin you'd better walk the other way. I love to fight when I'm on a gin..."

One night, right after he gave a small raise, Bobby put me in charge of running the kitchen crew of dishwashers. Everything that could go wrong went completely to hell that night. One of the crew didn't show up. The dishwasher kept breaking down and we kept running out of cleaning supplies. The hose we used to wash down the back room split apart...and so on.

Bobby actually could be a serious asshole and had the habit of praising you one moment and dropping you in the shit the next. Like offering you a doughnut and then bitching that you were eating it while on the job. Or sabotaging the kitchen after you got that raise to keep you mentally down on the farm.

He was screaming at me that entire night. It was like being caught in a hurricane of failure and incompetence and helplessness. The dishes stacked up and broke. An inch of water on the kitchen floor. Pots, pans, hell even the air was greasy-filthy. Bobby was purple with rage and put notches in his knife from smashing into the edge of his stove, over and over and over. It took us two extra hours to clean the kitchen and get ready to leave. One of the other cooks then told me, "Bobby wants to see you in the lounge before you go..."

So I walked over to his table, soaked completely through, smelling like a garbage can filled with rancid butter and lobster. Himself was kicking back, talking to a waitress and slowly inhaling one of many cigarettes. Oh, and he was halfway through a gin and tonic.

No screaming this time as he calmly ripped me a new asshole for a very long 15 minutes. He told me he'd never seen such a clusterfuck and sorry work in his 15 years as a cook. No, he didn't fire me that night, but I was lower in his book than the mentally disabled girl the steakhouse "hired" to run the dishwasher during slow afternoon shifts.

I found out later that he'd never given up drinking. He'd been on gin for a week before that night. My nightmare shift was just his way of setting me up for his own bit of cruel fun.

ooh dishwasher stories.. mine is in a large hotel on the North Sea coast working in a team with two large Turkish guys and a German misfit.. well misfit everywhere else, I guess. One day we had 1400 pax come through for lunch. It was manic. We'd hose down the dishes with a high pressure hot water hose till clean, shove them into the machine, run it just long enough to get them hot (about 40 seconds) take them out and feed in the next tray.. just to keep up with the demand from the kitchen. bloody crazy. At the end of the day the two Turks sat down and ate a 5 liter punnet of ice cream - EACH! Unfortunately, ice cream had an effect on one of the Turks like gin to your bloke - for no apparent reason he took exception to the fact that I was able to muddle my way through the German language after a couple of months better than he could after a couple of years and he stood up, picking up his folding chair which he then threw at me. It sailed through the air and crashed into the wall near my head. God knows what I did. Difficult buggar to work with but most days he was ok. But that ice-cream. geez.

Bought some of this on a whim at a BevMo run tonight. Dark color, but not full bodied, but an interesting character, especially with a little orange. Click to read more.

My mother drank Canadian whiskey and my father drank Scotch. They were in the generation where you had your drink and pretty much stuck to it. Although I remember being in a restaurant with them and them getting a Tom Collins and a Whiskey Sour and explaining to us that those were important to know if you were ever somewhere where you were expected to order a cocktail.

I'm glad I live in more ecumenical times.
