I just heard that song the other day; it was a cover version by Nick Drake.

Based on a Jaques Brel song. Maudlin and overwrought, sure. Lots of competition in pop music in that regard.

OMG did not know that. When I was a kid, my parents used to play the LP of the musical revue "Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris." The song that drove me round the bend (and still sticks in my head) was "Next", a prostitute's zombified description of her life as she services a man and calls "next" for the next customer. Gack.

"Maudlin and overwrought, sure."

Yes, there was a lot of such stuff back then. I don't listen to a lot of modern pop music but get the impression that its songs have a far more limited range of emotion than 70s pop did. Some song types though—like the weepies—should remain in the past.

If you're gonna dredge up a decades-old song about cannibalism in the mines, I'll see you with this maudlin junk from '74. My fellow Boy Scouts and I mocked this song endlessly during summer camp.
