One of the first books I read from my Dad's scifi collection was his collaboration with Larry Niven "The Mote in God's Eye."  Set me on my path of being an insatiable scifi reader.

Well, crap.

I loved his writing, mostly the Niven collaborations (and I thought I had read them all, turns out I missed a few and need to catch up). His nonfiction was always thought-provoking. His solo fiction sometimes felt a bit too militaristic, sorta like Gordon Dickson, but I'm a sucker for nuts-and-bolts SF.

His hardware reviews saved me a lot of money too.

I thought I had read them all too, but only missed two.  I did like his solo fiction, but then again I LOVE Gordon DIckson's Childe series.

There was mention of a procedure that prevented him from being on the recent shows. Doctor said he couldn't leave the house. No cause noted as of this morning. Didn't look like he was in the greatest shape a few months ago.

You folks know that I caught three in a row of their recent nine shows in Vegas. Did it on a self-satisfying whim, with a friend from third grade and our wives. Had a great time, and loved each show. They had a core group of tunes and played three different ones in the set each night. (One night, Two Against Nature; another, Rikki Don't Lose That Number; etc.)

Becker mostly perched on a stool and let Harrington crank fantastic solos, but he had a place each night where he welcomed the crowd, talked about how important music is, and how they needed the audience as much as they needed the band to be able to do this.
