Well, at least it wasn't like the time, very shortly after I'd bought the house ... I heard three-four distinct "thump bumps" in the night, but (like last night) went back to sleep when nothing followed. The next morning when I stepped onto the front porch to go to work, I found a russet potato lying there. Brains are funny because my first (irrational) thought was about the bag of potatoes I'd just bought and which were in the basement: "How'd that potato get up here from the basement?" lol  Several days later working in a flower bed in front of the house, I found two more, one broken in two. Apparently I'd had a "drive-by" potatoeing! Better than eggs, I think (but that happened some years later).  And they missed the windows!

Yup, last week heard a loud bang outside my window at 2 am. Looked outside my window and saw the telephone wires swinging. Thought it was a night bird or something hitting it. Checked the next day and saw no indications of damage or feathers. Three days later sitting at my patio table I smelt something funky. I knew I had gotten all the chipmunk trophies bagged and trashed. So I followed that lovely nose hair curling smell until I came upon a fledgling Robin, dead, directly under my window and wires. Must have gotten spooked by something and didn't have its night vision googles on. SAD!

this happens to us. it sounds like a big box is being dropped in the attic or something heavy like a brick falling in the wall.

Old houses. Usually with a big temperature swing, humidity, etc., the rafters will expand and pop as the boards move against each other or on nails. Sounds like someone dropped a brick on our house.

And, it turns out my friend found a pack on Craigslist, and now I'm kind of disappointed not to get the few $$ she was going to give me for it. Mine's in pretty good shape, as I didn't use it much. So I should think about selling it, but sure don't feel like packing it up for shipping. External frame and all.

You don't have to box it up. You just can't use "Flying Tags" anymore.

I am redoing our garage and was thinking about the stuff that's stuffed up in the rafters right now. Including a 40-year-old Kelty Serac that's seen a lot of things. I'm pretty sure the waist belt was shot the last time I carried it, so it would take some work to be able to use it again. Has my graduation tassel(s) on it. Straight to the dumpster it goes, tho.

edit: Well there's still a market for a Serac. I guess I'll throw it on eBay...
