Know of a good website that compares car prices and models? I was thinking of getting an online subscription to Consumer Reports. Is that worth it?

Going out today to look at some cars. Sunday so no hassling from sales people. We're buying sometime between this year and next May. Most probably new.

The rotation was at a CostCo, so I didn't think they would have done anything else. Thus my surprise at the lack of squeaking.

They may have turned the rotors when they did the other work, which can temporarily stop the squeaking.  Lazy8 is definitely right about having it looked at by someone reliable.  I recently had my front rotors replaced; it wasn't terribly expensive.  I once lost front brakes (burst fluid line), and was lucky enough to have the wherewithal roll up on a grass median; it was terrifying.

I think that's a photo of my truck and the total cost was around $220. Not that I'm saying to let it go to that point, but that it's really not a horrible expense so don't put it off. I kept thinking, "I don't have $600 at hand, so I'll just be careful" and that went on for quite some time.

Sooo, why would my squeaky brakes (which I've been told need work) stop squeaking after I got my tires rotated and balanced?   Surely they haven't been "healed"! Perhaps a new (coincidental) stage of brake wear?

Beeeecause you've worn thru the wear indicators and the pads are now down to the backing plates, and will soon wear your rotors into this?*

brakes broke

Have a competent shop look at them. If they need work have it done. It only gets more expensive later. Plus there's the whole "nobrakesnobrakesohmygodnobrakes" thing.

*Worst-case scenario depicted. Your brake life may vary. Could just be that the squirrel living in your car has started hibernating for the winter.
