Part of the problem is that vanity trumps health.  Over the years, I have listened to female hosts and guests on CBC radio deplore "fat shaming".

I could not help but get the impression that these women wanted to look hot, sexy and inviting and did not care about health.  Or the future.  Or the health of other women and girls.

Fast word to the present, and if you walk through a BC high school, hospital or clinic, over half the women staff are overweight and in poor health.    These days, there are all kinds of great role models to encourage children young people to live passively and become unhealthy.

We know where this ends up: reduced immunity, more frequent sickness, reduced mobility, chronic pain and at this end of this rainbow most likely opioid dependence.   Change is unlikely given the widespread multi-partisan support for obesity-sitting-dementia policies.

I use the phrase about the fat lady singing frequently.
Often during sporting events, but not exclusively.

Once upon a time we had Twiggy.  And then we had Karen Carpenter.  Everyone complained that little girls and women for that matter had tremendous issues trying to deal with unrealistic images of underweight women as the ideal.  Fat shaming was rampant and bulimia was an epidemic.

In response, we went the other way.  Overweight and fat became zaftik, Rubenesque and glamourous. We went the other way and changed the language to help assist to that end.

The last swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated had a non athletic woman for lack of any other way to say it, on the cover.

We encouraged or at least enabled the acceptance of obesity.  And now we sit here and wonder how we got this way.

How do we do something about it now that life has become a sedentary activity primarily occupied by sitting and looking at screens ?

I dunno.  My only point was to illustrate how we got this way.  It was not an accident and it did not happen overnight.

The power of advertising and what was once called Madison Avenue.

When was the last time you heard the expression, It's not over until the fat lady sings  ?

You are correct.  It was a click-bait style article title.  But imagine the simple version:   Exercise and reduce the risk of dementia.

Exercise is an evil word in much of North America these days.   Apparently Putin has used it.

Those who walked 3,800 steps a day had a 25% lower risk of developing dementia in the study. Those who walked 9,800 had a 50% lower risk. Those who walked at least 6,000 steps and who walked reasonably quickly for about half an hour a day had 62% lower likelihood of developing dementia.
