Standard stuff, but a terrific standard.  Voice and guitar are smoking hot here.  I'mma torn between a 7 and an 8.  Less gravelly Janis and lighter Beth Hart.  Tell me more, Texas from, umm, Scotland.

A friend was opening his own small record shop in the early nineties. He booked Sharleen Spiteri to sing at the opening ceremony. She was sitting on a stool next to me, chatting and drinking coffee. When they asked her to start, she binned her gum, put her mug down, and, with her guitarist, delivered an incredible unamplified acoustic set. Boy, that girl can sing!

Huh?!? A completely new band to these ears.  Hard to believe it was released 32 years ago.  Very clear undertones of both Janice Joplin and Beth Hart which is not a bad thing IMO.

Ha! I just came here to make this same comment! ('Cept, if you listen to Cheap Thrills again, Sharleen doesn't have anywhere near the frenetic intensity of TOAO JJ.) Cheers!
Edit: That said, I'd rather hear Texas than BB… now—Sharleen's goes down much easier than Janis's, for me, at this stage. :-)

Clearly, they've listened to Janis and perhaps the name is a tip of the hat to where Janis was from. I have some of Janis' early work and it was raw and well, "early." After listening to the evolution of Janis' work, I have to remind myself that generally, we all improve with practice. We know how tricky it can be for musicians, or anyone for that matter, to try to walk in someone else's shadow, so let's see how Texas develops over time. For me, Texas is filling an empty hole in my current music life. Namely, it seems there is precious little music hitting the mainstream scene that gets this gritty and emotive and doesn't suffer from over-productionitis.

I hear Susan, too. But this song sounds like a perfect Janis Joplin vehicle, which calls for Carolyn Wonderland. I swear, CW could get together with BB&tHC (still touring in some form or another, btw) and probably make a bird-in-the-hand career out of doing JJ covers.

I like the overall idea of this, but it doesn't quite make it for me. This singer sounds too much like a girl in anyone's local blues bar band to me. And they sound more San Francisco than Texas to me. Maybe they should study their American influences better.

Yes Texas (via Scotland) she does have a good voice (Sharlene Spiteri?) they've been around in the U.K for years, changing styles, duets with others (even a rapper!)...she had some kind of drink throwing incident with Paris Hilton earlier in the year..she gave Paris and ear full of abuse if I remember right. This song is above average for them though I'm afraid.

I DO love to hear a woman sing some R & B (REAL R&B, not the pop tripe some artists are calling R&B). However, IMOHO, Margo Timmins does a better job in the CJ \"Pale Sun, Crescent Moon\" album as does Reba in just about all that I\'ve heard of her.
