I know he's wicked fast and all, but would you really want listen to his a second time?

I agree.  Just because you can, doesn't always mean you should.  Aerial boundaries is the bar for me.  I'm not saying one guitar player is better than another, but to support your point, I can listen to that one over and over again.  It is timeless.  With amazing technic and proficiency, Michael Hedges weaves a melodic guitar tune that just doesn't boast on ability but surpasses his ability to play the instrument.
Bárbaro este hombre. Thanks RP
What a ride

Check out the YouTube video of TE and Billy Strings!
He's good at this isn't he

He's a certified guitar player.

OK it's just me and I'm sure it will sound grumpy. But whenever I hear crazy fast guitar like this, I think wow that is amazingly fast, like an impressive sporting event. I find it hard to connect with the guitar as music though. The song has astonishing guitar technique, but does little for me musically.

You do you. I love this.
brilliant!

Nice fiddling from the land down under

Is that a borrowed Adrian Legg style I hear in there somewhere?

Yes! Very Adrian Legg. Love it.

Zero sense.
impressive yes, but pretty tiring to listen to, if that makes any sense...
Love this stuff!
Well this is all very fancy but it doesn't sound very nice
Is that a borrowed Adrian Legg style I hear in there somewhere?
Impressed but totally unmoved.
Only to show off how fast you can play?
Not nice to listen to...
But very briliant!
Specialy after mister slowhand Eric Clapton!
I'm just always amazed at all the Tommy haters on RP. Can't figure it pout. The guy is a real master and a phenomenal talent. I guess some folks just don't like that sort of thing.
Not my taste!
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING!!!!!

no
i am having trouble listening to it for the first time too
I guess it has something to do with the fact I have been "blessed" with a music taste that doesn't include things with long guitar, saxophone or similar solos (so, yes, a lot of music gets PSD..I would PSD last half an hour if I could - but it's on the radio in the living room :p)
on the other hand, some sessions I like :D
May be the fastest non-Flamenco player I've ever heard.

Got turned on to Tommy in the late 80's by some friends stationed in Australia.  If you think he lacks "soul" listen to his cover of Lennon's  IMAGINE.

{#High-five}  Agreed.  Not just another guitar masturbator.
I haven't heard much of Tommy since I left Oz - great to hear this - more please Bill {#Sunny}

I can play that but I don't wanna :-)

I have to admit, as a guitar player(amateur bedroomer) I got a good chuckle out of that.
As for the song, my feeling was "Technically great, but where's the soul?" yet I realized at some point, I sure was moving my leg to the rhythm.

Too much bragging, A robot could do it faster.

....got no soul

I dunno - I watched several videos on Youtube. Clearly incredible technical virtuosilty and he seems to be having a great time while he plays but to me there's no soul to it.

phhht....play this with soul for me. This is an explosion not a ballad.
Yep... He practiced his scales.
Wow thanks for this!

I can play that but I don't wanna :-)
The No Doz song of the week...
He must have like ... six fingers on that left hand.
Garsh and golly gee, I can play all fast and stuff. Is this Joe Satriani with an acoustic?
Good grief this guy can play!!!!!!!!!!
Saw him live recently. Incredible player!  Double disc live set worth buying.
Tommy's an amazing guy, incredibly personable and a real inspiration. See him in concert if you can. You won't regret it. Then run home and pick up that guitar!
Highly Recommend the 2005 album LIVE ONE. Does a Beatles medley that would blow your shoes off.......
"At the age of 7 he heard Chet Atkins on the radio. He vividly remembers this moment and says it greatly inspired him." ~ Wikipedia
That's some wikit pickin' - 'nuff said!
My fingers hurt just listening to this. A 7 for fun. The segue into Norman Greenbaum - Spirit In The Sky didn't quite land on its feet, though...

Remember, if you don't quit picking that thing, it will never heal. After 42 years of 'noodling' I can attest to this fact. My favorite is the D A D G A D tuning. What a treasure trove of possibilities. Hammer on/Pull off on the G and E strings and the D and B strings at the second fret - kind of a weird 'double stop'. I've written 3 new songs in this tuning in the last month and I'm just getting started.
Coolness. I haven't experimented much with alternate tunings, having enough trouble with standard tuning. I did retune once to play Leo Kottke's version of "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring", which was cool, but I never perfected it.

I hear ya, brother. Maybe we should start a band called "Useless Noodling". I like it.

Fingers ablur
Oh my! Is this guy from this planet? Didn't think fingers could work that fast. Very good.
thank you Australia for this amazing talent (and much more too!)

I'll just quit my pointless doodling now. What's the use? This is how I always would like to have played if I'd put my 35 years of useless noodling in some direction.

Wow. Must hear more from this guy.
A true virtuoso, courtesy of Oz! Been a fan since the Goldrush days!(late 70's)
Mercy. What a picker! The "percussion" at the beginning & that drops in from time to time sounds like someone stirring their coffee w/ a spoon real fast.
Come to the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield Kansas in two weeks and see this guy play. He has been a regular there for years now and he is one of the best guitar players the festival has ever seen. A real treat to watch!
Jeez 'O Pete. Was this cut being played at 78 speed? What a finger-picker - just superb.

Nice jam!

it's not just that he's playing fast ... he plays multiple melodies at once ... bass line, melody, lead ... crazyness saw him live a few months back. i couldn't believe all that was coming from one guitar
Man. That boy can flat pick.

Ditto on that. Saw him at Sierra Nevada in Chico and still have a hard time believing I heard and saw what he was doing.
dang, tommy, you're making my heart hurt. heard him last year at a bluegrass festival, and he was amazing live. Apparently the guy's been playing guitar since he was 5. Which makes for what, 40 years of experience?
He's the Leo Kottke of guitarists... no, that would be Leo. Okay, he's the Tommy Emmanuel of guitarists. That would work. Makes one wonder where he got lessons.
Wow.
Tommy does a great instrumental cover of "Imagine" on his "Determination" cd. Good Stuff
Kicks Yngwie Malmsteen's ass!
The song probably had to stop because his guitar catched fire.
My god! His fingers are everywhere!
Wow!! Wind him up and let him go :)
Finally some Tommy Emmanuel!! If you ever get a chance to see him in concert, DO IT.
A friend turned me on to Tommy a year ago and I'm constantly thrilled and not a little dazzled by him. I can't wait to see him in February in Atlanta!
Tommy Emmanuel is God.
Holy crap, this guy can pick!
Thanks for throwing some Tommy Emmanuel into the mix.
