Baby
It's been a long day,
Baby
Things ain't been going my way
You know I need you here
To clear my mind
All the time

And baby
The way you move me,
It's crazy
It's like you see right through me
And make it easier
Believe me,
You don't even have to try

Oh, because

You are the best thing
(you're the best thing)
You are the best thing
(you're the best thing, baby)
You are the best thing
(you're the best thing, ooh)
Ever happened to me

Baby
We've come a long way
Baby
You know I hope and I pray
That you believe me
When I say
This love will never fade away

Oh, because

You are the best thing
(you're the best thing)
You are the best thing
(you're the best thing, baby)
You are the best thing
(you're the best thing, ooh)
Ever happened to me

Both of us have known love before,
To come on all promising like a spring
Then walk on out the door
Our hearts are strong and our hearts are kind
Let me tell you just exactly what's on my mind

You are the best thing
(you're the best thing)
You are the best thing
(you're the best thing, baby)
You are the best thing
(you're the best thing, ooh)
Ever happened to me

You are the best thing
(you're the best thing)
You are the best thing
(you're the best thing, baby)
You are the best thing
(you're the best thing, ooh)
Ever happened to me

You are the best thing
You are the best thing
You are the best thing
That ever happened to me

The opening made me think this was a Tom Jones song.
We need more Tom Jones here.
Thanks for playing this one in the Main Mix, BillG!!

I do have this one as a 10, for the soul influences and great memories dancing with my gal while drinking wine at home.

Long Live RP!!
That intro made me think a '70's variety show was beginning!
Nice, but I'd rather hear the backup singers out in front on this one.
What a nice surprise! I'm used to LaMontagne's folk music, but this little piece of soul is good to the ears... and to the heart :)
A nice sentiment in this song.

I'm really surprised to hear the negative comments. I love Ray Lamontagne. I love his voice, his emotion and his songwriting. I guess that's the variety of life, I'm still surprised though, the music on this channel is really good, but I guess that's why they play it for you rather than let you play it.

It really is a mystery to me, too. Honestly, Mr. LaMontagne's voice makes me want to throw up. But why do I love Joe Cocker? Not logical, is it?
Not a hug LaMontagne fan, but this is my favorite song from him.
{#Hearteyes}I need to play this song for my fiancé! I love RP!

Agree on all counts.

I am undecided on this one. His voice seems to be getting on my nerves a bit and this song sounds pretty derivative. Hmm...maybe I'm not on the fence after all. {#Think}
This song has a real Otis Redding feel to it.
This song is beautifully written and dynamic

Well, that's convenient. Just a few hours ago I commented when Solomon Burke's "None Of Us Are Free" was played:

Am I the only one who thinks Ray LaMontagne lifted "You Are The Best Thing" directly from this?

So—am I?

yes

Definitely.

beautiful!!!
I was surprised to hear that he is musical guest on SNL this weekend!
I just can't listen to this guys voice anymore. Fingernails on a chalk board!

I suppose I do, now that you mention it. I was thinking more Ray Charles' "Heaven Help Us All."

Ok, fine.  I give up.  I'll buy this album because I keep hearing so many good songs on it.

For the "overplay" people, do you mean overplayed here?  Or on radio?  Because I've never heard Ray LaMontagne except on RP.  My local radio sucks.

And does anybody else hear a tiny bit of "Yesterme Yesteryou Yesterday" in the beginning, before the vocals start.

I usually refrain from negative comments. But I have to agree. Genius album that is getting killed by being overplayed.
Love Ray, generally.  This is getting played to death, though.  Maybe not here.  But when I (gasp) happen to hear the sound of commercial radio in my travels, it seems he's getting plenty of air time.  Just saying.  Don't bite my head off.
This guy is like a chameleon, always changing. Yes I do hear Joe Cocker in this one. Terrific!.{#Cheers}
How can you hate on a guy like Ray? {#Think}

From listening to this guys stuff which I have found on RP, I think this guy is worth a listen. I am liking this song...a bit Joe Cocker, a bit Motown.

Agreed.  Check it out...his birth name is Ray Charles J. LaMontagne.  That ought to tell us something, eh?  I have come to like the stuff I've heard on RP.  I like the manner in which he decided to turn to music as a career even better...sort of a "take this shoe and shove it" kinda thing.  Nice work RCJL! {#Cheers}

Lalalalalalalaaalalalalalalalaaaalalalalalalalalalalalaaaaaaaalalalalalalalaaaaaalalalalalalalalala.  WTF?
the more I hear this guy on RP the more annoyed I get, really starting to hit a very raw nerve.  enuf Bill, time to move on to another album, how about something from the new Neil Young, for that matter any N.Young or Dylan would work for me, or more recent...thievery corp.
This sounds really out of date.

Dig this song, though it's a bit different from the Ray I got to know a year or two back (from RP!). This one gets stuck in my head, especially the horns. But I don't much care for the backing vocals or really the chorus itself that much. Somehow I enjoy this a lot despite that though...

Hey! Don't be hating on the chard!

Sounds corny and dated (I know, it's a new release)

Yeah, man! No negative vibes!

I like Ray Lamontagne and I like this song, but this song isn't the Ray Lamontagne I like.

I worship Ray Lamontagne, lord knows I do. But while I realize that some of you (who don't care for his quieter vocals) may prefer this, he's starting to sound a bit too much like Michael McDonald to me here. Even worse — I actually caught myself experiencing a Paul Rudd, 40-Year-Old Virgin moment as a direct result of this song's assault on my early morning consciousness.

I'm sure this is the track the label is pushing as the first single. However, Bill, I beg of you: play something else from this album. Anything, anything at all that won't make me wish I were listening to Fran Drescher instead.

This man is an amazing artist.  I saw him live and he is incredible!!
I just finished listening to an interview with Ray Lamontagne on The Current (https://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2008/10/06/ray_lamontagne/) which ended with this song. Then I switch over to RP, and here it is again. It's all part of the Cosmic Consciousness.

That's IT! I bought it! {#Daisy}

Never gets old.. His ACL show was strange, he's so introverted, sad.

LOVE him.

Nice to hear Ray a little happier again.  Some of the tracks on his previous disc were decidedly, well, depressed.
A Sherman can give you a very nice edge.

I was just thinking of Oddball when I scrolled down to your post!

This guy simply does not get old to me.  Bring it, Ray!
This will never be my favorite Ray Lamontagne song, but it's good to hear him stretch musically.
Like a really horrible ripoff of "Yester-me, Yester-you, Yesterday."  {#Puke}
Yaaaaaahhh.. diggin on some new Ray!
YUM
While he is a soulful singer, this, in my opinion, is not the right kind of soul for him.
