Hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen sulfide and ammonia wouldn't be a good combo here.

I'm glad you enjoyed this. It was fun to put together. It's been a project for quite a while... I was going to make a compilation cassette tape years ago! I Just finally got around to doing it because this club I'm in here at Radio Paradise.
I love that Beach Boys song off of their album "Holland". I place "Holland" along with "Surf's Up"as two of my favorite Beach Boys albums. That lyric from "California"... "where the monarchs journey ends on windswept Cypress tree" just hits me right.
#4 I like the Best Coast. My wife and I went to see them at Pappy and Harriet's Pioneertown Saloon up by Yucca Valley. It was horrible. I'm not a fan of extremely loud, overpowered music. And their indoor stage is just that. Their outdoor venue has a better sound to me. I did see Jay Farrar/ Son Volt indoors once. That was great. My ears didn't fall off after that show.
Yes to the 90's! I like all the decades of music I've had the chance to live through so far. But... the 90's seem to have a lot of tunes I've always found favor with.
Hmmm. A 1990's Greatest Hits package? Unless you beat me to it!

Wow! Another grapefruit guy? I've always loved them. My dad, who was the unpretentious hunter/ fisherman, grew worms in his backyard for fishing. His choice property was under a grapefruit tree. This tree would produce THE sweetest grapefruit I've ever tasted. I would eat them like oranges. I'd pick bagfuls of them and squeeze massive amounts of juice. Since he passed away, and my mom to, I've had to resort to buying Ocean Spray 100% juice from the store. Not to bad... but definitely not the product of worm castings.
I'm going to fix me some grapefruit juice on the rocks and salute my dad!

Great cover art, front and back. You must have one hell of a printer to get that deep black. Onwards to the review!

"And if California slides into the ocean, like the Mystics and Statistics say it will. I predict this motel will be standing, until I pay my bill" - Warren Zevon

Thanks for the review.
I was worried, as always, that my selections would be to "lightweight".
I have this tendency to lean to the "Pop" side of music. I'm not as "sophisticated" as most Radio Paradise listeners. I just like the upbeat, optimistic stuff. No downers for me. That's why I'm not much a fan of the Blues.
The Led song wasn't chosen because I was trying to stay away from the usual tunes. It is in my Playlist though. Along with 28 other songs about California that didn't fit on one CD.
I'm sad I missed your New York themed release.

I bet you had fun making this one, there is an endless pool of geography songs to choose from and California has probably got more than its fair share seeing how so many artist are either from there or go there to make it in the biz.  Alright let's do this thing:

1.  This is actually very similar melody to their hit.  The meandering lead guitar is really good though.

2.  I am always a big fan of a simple acoustic rhythm strum and banjo, very nice.

3.  Actually never heard this one.  No mistaking the Beach Boys. Little side note, there is always a tinge of what might have been when I listen to them because as a child I was a huge boys fan and had almost all of their albums.  Lost them all in one of my families moves sometime in the 80s, I bet some of them were worth quite a penny in today's market. {#Doh}
4.  Can't help but be happy listening to this bouncy tune.  Makes me want to do the Carlton. {#Bounce}

5.  I have always loved this song. This is one of those songs that I  have to annoyingly sing along loudly as all of those who may be unfortunate enough to be in proximity are forced to listen in absolute horror.  This time it is my poor dog Jake.{#Eek}

6. Another familiar tune. They really had a nice sound, pleasing to the masses without being too generic.

8.  Don't know what time period this Petty is but it sounds a lot like the Wilbury's which of course is a good thing. Half expect to Orbison to chime in somewhere.  Also makes you think maybe Petty was the dominant songwriter in that project....hmm.

12. Love everything Farrar touches. There is always the debate of Farrar or Tweedy.  My answer is oh yes.

13.  I really like this.  My favorite song on the mix so far.

14.  Always thought this guy would be bigger, not that he hasn't had a successful career just thought he would be bigger.  Very similar to Jakob Dylan who I also think is a little under rated. I have not heard anything from him that wasn't good.

16. Was looking up the history of Luna and I had no idea it spawned from Galaxie 500.  Huh, learn something new every day.

18. This whole mix so far is kinda like a time capsule for me. It takes me back to late 90s early 2000s which was a very good time for me.

19. Of course the title of this song makes me think of Counting Crows, but this could not be further from that. {#Mrgreen}  This reminds of me of a mix between John Hartford and Richard Thompson.

20. Very nice reminds of me of The LAs

22. Well alright, saved the best for last. Love the rich sound, Phil Spectre would be proud.

Well since I only comment on the songs I really like, the more words the more I liked the mix and "I got blisters on me fingers!"  This did have a real 90s vibe to it overall so it had that time capsule feel which is something I am exploring now with my next mix.  And like everyone else loved the art work and particularly the use of photo paper; love the sheen and the feel of it which will hopefully soothe my fingers from all of the typing.  More of a grapefruit man myself but I imagine they got a lot of those in Callieforny too.  Totally choice and gnarly, dude.{#Cowboy}

The Shocking Blue have another song other than Venus? Who knew!

The Beach Boys are the quintessential California band. I do confess that I have never purchased a BB record, not even Pet Sounds. Don't hate me for it!

Hey I thought the East Coast was the Best Coast!

The Low song is a familiar tune, it's got great hooks.

About 75% of Tom Petty's songs end up on the radio so it's refreshing to hear a deeper track. Pretty good ode to CA from a FLA guy.

Shawn Mullins does a good Petty impersonation.

I've always liked the Luna song, brings a smile to my ears every time.

I knew that was Kathleen Edwards with Doe. He likes to collaborate with women I guess. Jill Sobule did some work with him not so long ago.

"you're my future history" - Now that is a great lyric from Mr. Nathan. Wish I came up with that one.

When the mix was over I was wondering where the "Going to California" track was that you promised. How did it miss the cut?

I'm midway thru my 2nd listen and keep hearing more goodies as I get familiar with the mix. Really digging it. My very first RPMCC mix was about New York and I always wanted to bookend that with a California mix. I just didn't have the selections to pull it off. Maybe not being immersed in the culture/area is part of it. Your collection was one I would have been proud to have put out. Rock on Golden State! "And if California slides into the ocean, like the Mystics and Statistics say it will. I predict this motel will be standing, until I pay my bill" - Warren Zevon

Thanks guys.
Marty... "The Golden State" by John Doe... the female vocalist is Kathleen Edwards. She's very nice indeed. As Radio Paradise listeners, we should all be familiar with her.
I was going to include her song "Goodnight California" on my CD... but I only had so much room.

Frankster... That John Doe song really doesn't have much to do about California... the title fits.
I was looking to put "California Here I Come" by Al Jolson on this disc. I then realized I didn't need to go that far back for songs with the same title and both totally different.
Ahhh. The PCH!
I guess I need to California City songs next...

really sweet effort here with a few of sing-out-loud tunes

This one was really well executed. Lots of new stuff to me, plus some good familiar tunes. Standouts:

1. Sounded really familiar, eventually decided it wasn't. Strong start.

6. Another band I hadn't paid much attention to. I see I was missing something.

8. The only song I expected to hear on this that actually appeared. Tom can crash any party as far as I'm concerned.

12. This fit really well, and made me listen twice.

13. Lovely, chill vibe. Another band I'd never heard of.

14. A bit crunchier than most of the rest of the disk. Channeling the ghost of Tom Petty?

15. Female voices are a nice contrast to the rest of the CD. Sounds like something I need more of.

17. Is that X? No, just John Doe? Still damned good. And who is that singing along? I like her.

19. Didn't recognize Dave Alvin without the Blasters around him, and I like him a lot better this way.

21. Reminded me of a book I read a long time ago: The Last Days of the Late, Great State of California. I confess I liked the book better.

22. Another new band to me. Good note to close on.

This was really well put together, nothing on here I wouldn't listen to again. And did I mention the cover art? Well done, sir!
