vaccum windshield wipers.  These and VWs scarred me so much that I still have trouble using the wipers for just a light mist - "What If I use up the last few cycles on something like this and we really need them later?".  It makes Mrs. Islander bonkers.

I "learned" to drive a stick in that car.  My mother would let the 6 or 7 year old me shift.  It was a long way from first to second... probably 18 inches?

My brother inherited it and proceeded to destroy it...but not until after several summers when he'd take the top off and drive it around the Jersey shore. 

It was an awesome car.

There was a guy in my neighborhood back in the '70s who had a yellow Scout similar to that one.  Very boxy, even more than a Jeep - it was cool though.
