The March of the Karens
The name has come to represent an entitled and belligerent white woman. But what does this narrative say — and elide — about racism and sexism today?
Posted online and watched by millions, the Karen video offers a kind of wish-fulfillment fantasy in which racism is actually punished. It’s a fantasy not only for people of color but for white people, too, who are among the most vociferous in their denunciations of Karen, perhaps seeking to distance themselves from any suggestion that they might be complicit in her actions or capable of them. To go even further: It’s a white person’s fantasy that racism is just a matter of a few semi-hysterical, possibly mentally unstable characters, ranting on the fringes, dismissed with a flick of the screen.

ONLY KAREN WAS never an anomaly. Miss Ann (sometimes Miss Anne) was her forerunner, coming from Southern Black vernacular of the 19th century — the mistress of the plantation, the boss lady (and proto-girlboss), with a mandatory honorific. While she was subordinate to the white man (Mr. Charlie), she still held a higher status in the hierarchy than Black people and exploited this for all she was worth, alternately imperious and dainty, belligerent and helpless, depending on context. The moniker has persisted: The writer Zora Neale Hurston listed it in a glossary appended to her 1942 short fiction “Story in Harlem Slang,” the memoirist and civil rights activist Maya Angelou deployed it in her poem “Sepia Fashion Show” in 1969 (“I’d remind them please, look at those knees, / you got at Miss Ann’s scrubbing”) and as late as 2016, when CNN exit polls for the presidential election indicated that more than 40 percent of white women had voted for Donald Trump, the journalist Amy Alexander, writing on The Root, explained the results as the “Miss Ann effect.”

But as Carla Kaplan, a professor of American literature, notes in “Miss Anne in Harlem” (2013), by the time of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s, a more subtle white woman had come to earn the name — one who intentionally entered Black spaces at a time when other white people denounced such an act “as either degeneracy or lunacy.” Some of these women were activists, others mere thrill-seekers or provocateurs, their motives and desires ranging “from dreadful to honorable,” Kaplan writes, and they were greeted in the Black community with caution.

What struck me was how quickly the officer drew their guns.   Thinkin' here that 99.9998% of Americans would have viewed the officers drawing their guns as "normal".   Oh brother.....

‘The Lost Cause’ Is Back
If this phony “debate” over the obscure concept of critical race theory caught you off guard and unaware, you are not alone. But it is apparently part of a Republican political strategy to make race — or more precisely, the denial of American racism — a central (and winning) political issue for Republicans.

As David Siders reported Wednesday in Politico, the mantra “America is not a racist country” is emerging as “an early plank of the 2024 G.O.P. contest.”As Siders put it:
Top Democrats, including President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, have said publicly they don’t believe America is a racist country. But Republicans are hoping to portray the party as out of step with the thinking of mainstream America. And by attempting to harness lightning-rod issues such as critical race theory and “defund the police,” the G.O.P. is signaling race will again be at the center of the 2024 campaign.
We could go through how Republicans are using a faux campaign against critical race theory to prevent the accurate teaching of history, or how it is unmistakable that America is a racist country and that doesn’t require most individual Americans to be consciously racist, and how “defund the police” is a completely logical proposal that, in most cases, is not about abolition of the police force but the reallocation of funds from the police to social services. But there is no use or need.

This is not a debate about facts, this is a debate about narratives. This is a “Lost Cause” redux. When the South lost the Civil War, revisionists there invented the propaganda narrative of the “Lost Cause,” positing that the fight had been honorable and righteous and not about maintaining slavery but maintaining a superior way of life. In this narrative, slavery had been good and the enslaved treated relatively well, with many of the enslaved happy workers.

As Ty Seidule, a professor emeritus of history at West Point and the Chamberlain fellow and a professor of history at Hamilton College, wrote in “Robert E. Lee and Me: A Southerner’s Reckoning with the Myth of the Lost Cause,” “The Lost Cause created a flawed memory of the Civil War, a lie that formed the ideological foundation for white supremacy and Jim Crow laws, which used violent terror and de jure segregation to enforce racial control.” (...)

But many Americans like the sanitized version of their history — color-corrected and Photoshopped — and always have. (...)

Ok, now we are getting to where the rubber meets the road and the quickening. Same as in violent crime, when white wealthy people start to feel the pain, common sense will miraculously rise from the ashes:

This is a very interesting and nuanced conversation coming from different perspectives.  Yes it is long.  What I would suggest is that if you feel like it, you should watch and if you don't then you shouldn't cause facism or something.

I think we can all agree that racism still exists in America. Do you really think that people in positions of power and influence who hold racist attitudes are going to uniformly put their biases aside and refrain from acting on those attitudes while going about their daily lives? Please. Racism in America did begin or end with segregation laws or restrictions on voting rights.

There is a broad spectrum of opinions about racism and how deeply it's embedded in American culture, just as there's a broad spectrum of critiques of CRT. From what I can tell, the more reasonable voices supporting CRT do not believe that all White people are racist and/or evil or that CRT is a Marxist-driven theory attacking capitalism. The father speaking at a public meeting about the lack of training teachers have when discussing matters of race and racism, but their involvement in those subjects has to happen when students display racism—like the students in Traverse City, MI who engaged in online virtual selling and trading of their fellow Black students.

CRT is not a sign of the destruction of White culture in America. The attempt to paint it as such is pretty much the conjuring up of a new bogeyman by right-wing pundits and politicians. Before CRT the Threat to America was illegal immigration, political correctness, gay right/marriage, transgender athletes blah blah blah.
