Crystal river
Got a woman on the other side
Crystal river
Got a woman on the other side
And nothin' can touch me here
Nothin' can touch me here
Nothin' can touch me here
On crystal river

I love her
I swear by the diamond sky
I love her
I swear by the diamond sky
And nothin' can touch me here
And nothin' can touch me here
And nothin' can touch me here
On crystal river

I'm dreamin'
Dreamin' where
The water's wide
Crystal river
Got a woman on the other side
And nothin' can touch me here
Nothin' can touch me here
No nothin' can touch me here
On crystal river

---

She's sleeping
Sleeping by the water side
She's sleeping
Out there on that bank
She lies
And nothin' can touch me here
Nothin' can touch me here
No nothin' can touch me here
On crystal river

This is Tom Petty!  Mudcrutch was the name he & his band had before they became the Heartbreakers.

Exactly my thoughts
Vocal sounds like Tom Petty

Was listening to Crystal River while walking my dog, and during the jam I couldn't help thinking I had heard this before.  Couldn't place it until I got back home and listened to it again, and, yep, it's so much like the intro to Sweet Jane off of Lou Reeds rock'n'roll animal!  I knew if I came to RP I would find someone who thought the same thing!

So there is something else to Mudcrutch other than their rubbish version of Matty Groves (oops, sorry, "Shady Grove" I meant). I rather like this and its gentle bumbley melodic style. A pleasant way of passing some time and great to work to.

yuck

sounds like Warren's voice a bit there.
I'll take a contrarian view on this one:  it's a definite snoozer. As in, puts you in a coma - if you're not already herbally induced. Just way too long, waaay too meandering and, yeah, there's Tom Petty's whiny voice.  Never liked it.  Still don't.  He's just one of the folks I never could appreciate.  He's got longevity, though, so that speaks to his talent, I guess.
I love when music can transport me somewhere else. This song chills me out and does that perfectly. While I love when Petty is rockin, this song is too pretty to ignore.
Kind of a Lou Reed feel in parts. I enjoyed that stroll.

Well, I can feel myself passing into a catatonic state the longer this goes on. Tom Petty does some super-rocking numbers which really get the feet tapping, but he also comes out with narcoleptic turkeys like this one. IMO naturally

Really very - very nice
I am not a big fan of Tom Petty, but I really like this tune.  I gave it a 10.  It figures.  This only gets a lukewarm 6.6 which is for him a low rating on RP.

This is just amazing.  I love the lengthy instrumental interlude - reminiscent of "Layla."  In my opinion, this song could go on for twenty minutes and I'd just drift along with it, a huge grin on my face and about five cats snuggled around me, purring and drooling. Mmmmm....{#Sunny}
Fine, fine music.

Gotta laugh - I was listening to this song and thinking it was far too short... I guess I am a dork. Let's form a club. We'll call it the "Dork Side of the Moon Club." {#Lol}

Cool! I am pleased to hear a post 1979 Petty production that doesn't make me want to hurl.{#Puke} This song is actually fairly decent and non offensive to the ears!{#Cheers}

I've always liked Tom Petty, even before I had a Gainesville connection.  But this song just fits so well with the image I remember of Crystal River, and the springs and the Ichnetucknee River just north of town, that I have to love the song.

Florida is not the kind of place where the landscape hits you across the face with its drama, but when you get to know its subtlety, it has a beauty that is unique and incredible.  It is too bad that development has ruined so much of it, but then we are over-running the planet.  The places that haven't been spoiled by human encroachment are few and far, far away.

phil, you hit it on the head.  I'm a long-time Gainesvillian, and have seen magical natural areas become ruined.  The completely spring-fed Ichetucknee River used to be crystal clear throughout its run...now there's algae and cloudiness from various underground sources that have been polluted by runoff from nearby cattle operations.  It's still beautiful, but not the pristine paradise it once was.

Mudcrutch's music is some of my favorite.  Petty was/is a magician.

Every alligator, every blackwater swamp, every freshwater spring - everything
All we need is one more damn developer tearing her heart out
All we need is one more Mickey Mouse
Another golf course, another country club, another gated community
Lord I need her, Lord I need her, and she's slipping away
If my grandfather could see her now, he'd lay down and die
Cause every minute every second every hour, every day, Lord she's slipping away

YEAH!!! LET'S GET SOME MOFRO ON RP

I enjoy reading the stories other listeners write down here. Like the one by philbertr, few lines below. I was doing something else, reading in the next room when I felt attracted to this long Crystal River tune. Had to sit down and see who was singing and playing : I am glad I did, this is another CD to add to the to-buy list. Having a part of such a different world in a big city opposite side of the world and yet sharing the feeling. Nice... Music is magic

My point is this, there are places where humans have done some damage but I don't agree with the thought that the planet would be better place if we where not here. I believe this planet was created by a higher power for mankind which incomperhensible for us to fully understand. It's not all doom and gloom, most damage is reverible. The planet is well capable of healing it's self in most cases, so unlatch those arms from that tree!!!!

Off topic from this great song but:

Damage is reversable? Extinction is not reversable - and many, many animals that roamed this planet are now extinct thanks to the damage mankind has wrought on the face of this planet.

philbertr, you hang right onto that tree.

A lot of west coast Floridians used to own small weekend cabins on the rivers up there.

I'm pretty sure the diamonds are a metaphor for twinkling stars; "diamond sky" produces a more glistening, subtly flashing, multihued image than, say, "night sky" or "starry sky."
Nice long, stoney jam in the middle of the song there. Flashbacks to college.....

Thank you for the reminder. 50 miles west of here, and 500 meters up, is a field that is calling to me.

 Jelani wrote:

I dunno. But that Dylan fellow mentioned in a song you may have heard too...

"Oh, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free/
Sillhouetted by the sea
Circled by the circus sands
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.
Hey Mr. Tambourine Man...."
What are circus sands?
I think it's called metaphor. Or poetry, if you prefer.

Sublime
I can't believe that I am even commenting on something so mediocre and repetitive.

Love the instrumental passage in this song.

Very mellow. I can't wait until MegaDeath does a cover of it!

If Tomy Petty's first band really gave itself a terrible moniker like "Mudcrutch" and was really putting out endless, meandering music like this, I have to say that there is little mystery why it never captured the public's attention the first time around. Say what you will about the Grateful Dead; at least they had a cool name.

This gets a little too much air play.  A little slow and pointless for me.
And this is different from TP & The Heartbreakers how?  Oh, TP gets more money you say?  Whatever.  Nice tune.
Tom Petty??

I love this song it rambles endlessly and gets nowhere. I can relate to that.

I will download it on my lock radio as a snooze tone.
I typically feel this deep-seated fondness for Tom Petty -- Petty looks and acts like friends of mine back in the day. But I'm not sure about this one.
White Bird In A Golden Cage All Alone
I would add my comments to the pigpiling here, but everything I could say negatively about this song has already been said...
Reminds me of a Lou Reed guitar solo..from that live album...? blah nothing in there

parrothead wrote:
Just read in Guitar World that the late Steve Gaines of Lynyrd Skynyrd was once a member of Mudcrutch.
Not according to AMG: Biography by Steve Leggett Formed in Gainesville, FL, in 1970, Mudcrutch were essentially a precursor to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, with a then 17-year-old Tom Petty on bass, Mike Campbell and Tom Leadon (the brother of ex-Eagle Bernie Leadon) on guitars, Benmont Tench on keyboards, and Randall Marsh on drums. Popular on the Florida bar circuit, Mudcrutch relocated to L.A. in 1974 and was offered a recording contract from Leon Russell and Denny Cordell's Shelter Records, but the band splintered before any significant recording was completed, although Petty remained under contract to Shelter as a solo artist. In time, the band drifted back together, this time with Petty and Campbell on guitars, Tench on keyboards, and a rhythm section of Ron Blair on bass and Stan Lynch on drums. Calling themselves Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, they assumed Petty's solo contract with Shelter Records and released the self-titled Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers LP on the label in 1976. The rest, as they say, is history. In the summer of 2007, Petty, Campbell, Tench, Leadon, and Marsh reunited as Mudcrutch and recorded an album, the self-titled Mudcrutch, which was released a year later in 2008 on Reprise Records. The band followed the album with a limited tour.
This is probably much better under the influence of shrooms.
*Sigh* well, the good news is that songs by the boring-ass National aren't being played 5-6 times a day now. The bad news, is that they've been replaced by boring-ass songs by Mudcrutch 5-6 times a day.
Geez what's with all the diatribe...I always thought real Rock N' Roll was a rally against the 2 minute pop crap, but the 2 minute ditty seems like what half the folks around here want. This is good stuff...an effort to craft music instead of a saleable item.
Aahhh, I needed Tom Petty's happy sounds. Me feel better now! :) Thanks Bill!
gosh, this isn't very interesting, is it?
