This is Tom Petty!  Mudcrutch was the name he & his band had before they became the Heartbreakers.

So there is something else to Mudcrutch other than their rubbish version of Matty Groves (oops, sorry, "Shady Grove" I meant). I rather like this and its gentle bumbley melodic style. A pleasant way of passing some time and great to work to.

I'll take a contrarian view on this one:  it's a definite snoozer. As in, puts you in a coma - if you're not already herbally induced. Just way too long, waaay too meandering and, yeah, there's Tom Petty's whiny voice.  Never liked it.  Still don't.  He's just one of the folks I never could appreciate.  He's got longevity, though, so that speaks to his talent, I guess.

I love when music can transport me somewhere else. This song chills me out and does that perfectly. While I love when Petty is rockin, this song is too pretty to ignore.

Kind of a Lou Reed feel in parts. I enjoyed that stroll.

Really very - very nice

I am not a big fan of Tom Petty, but I really like this tune.  I gave it a 10.  It figures.  This only gets a lukewarm 6.6 which is for him a low rating on RP. 

This is just amazing.  I love the lengthy instrumental interlude - reminiscent of "Layla."  In my opinion, this song could go on for twenty minutes and I'd just drift along with it, a huge grin on my face and about five cats snuggled around me, purring and drooling. Mmmmm....

Cool! I am pleased to hear a post 1979 Petty production that doesn't make me want to hurl. This song is actually fairly decent and non offensive to the ears!

I enjoy reading the stories other listeners write down here. Like the one by philbertr, few lines below. I was doing something else, reading in the next room when I felt attracted to this long Crystal River tune. Had to sit down and see who was singing and playing : I am glad I did, this is another CD to add to the to-buy list. Having a part of such a different world in a big city opposite side of the world and yet sharing the feeling. Nice... Music is magic

I've always liked Tom Petty, even before I had a Gainesville connection.  But this song just fits so well with the image I remember of Crystal River, and the springs and the Ichnetucknee River just north of town, that I have to love the song. 

Florida is not the kind of place where the landscape hits you across the face with its drama, but when you get to know its subtlety, it has a beauty that is unique and incredible.  It is too bad that development has ruined so much of it, but then we are over-running the planet.  The places that haven't been spoiled by human encroachment are few and far, far away.

it's alright but I wouldn't play it for a festival crowd.

I quite enjoyed this strung out piece...sort of a grand malaise...like the US situation sort of (thanks BO you Ahole) sort of...a big drag off of an esmerelda smoke....

Crystal River is a beautiful and somewhat rural part of the west coast of Florida. It's about an hour drive north of Tampa and about an hour southwest of Gainesville.

Sadly, there is a lot of retirement migration so former grazing lands and scrubs are becoming stucco wastelands for the 55+ set.

Crystal River is also the area in which you can find our manatees - Homassassa State Park being the easiest to access.

A lot of west coast Floridians used to own small weekend cabins on the rivers up there.

If Tomy Petty's first band really gave itself a terrible moniker like "Mudcrutch" and was really putting out endless, meandering music like this, I have to say that there is little mystery why it never captured the public's attention the first time around. Say what you will about the Grateful Dead; at least they had a cool name.

I typically feel this deep-seated fondness for Tom Petty -- Petty looks and acts like friends of mine back in the day. But I'm not sure about this one.

This is probably much better under the influence of shrooms.

Geez what's with all the diatribe...I always thought real Rock N' Roll was a rally against the 2 minute pop crap, but the 2 minute ditty seems like what half the folks around here want. This is good stuff...an effort to craft music instead of a saleable item.
