California rain is falling
I can hear the summer calling
Far away, far away
A song that's fading

Put me on a plane tomorrow
I'll try to run from all my sorrow
Far away, far away
From endless waiting

It's so cold here without my sun
I'm so sad here, far away from everyone
What a fool to be ambitious
Moving here with all of my wishes
Far away, far away
From where my heart is

Shut the phone off and pack my bags
No more boys who boast and brag
Far away, far away
Where I belong

I'm so sorry for some things I've done
I'll be lonely till I can see my only one
California rain keeps falling
I can hear my old love calling
Far away, far away
Where I started

I'm going back, back where I belong
Gonna catch a train
I gotta get back where I belong
Get back...

Playing on a Friday afternoon as northern/central California is facing yet another atmospheric river and a massive flooding situation.  Coincidence?  I think not...

Agreed! Definitely has that vintage feel to it too.
Whata sweet voice
I want a hot chocolate and a hot water bottle.
new fan here
Shut the F'one off...........oh yesss.
So glad the rain is back and that this song is playing!
Wish it was raining....

Yeah, California gets on my nerves, too.
{#Sunny} another Goddess , thank you ...........happy to live in her world......

This woman is terrific.  I'm off to Amazon to buy the CD (Hey!  So I'm old school).
She sounds so much like Billie Holiday on some parts it's CRAZY!  {#Wink}
Awesome segue from Patsy Cline!!
Very nice on the ears.
IL TEMPO NON è UN PROBLEMA ASCOLTANDO RADIO PARDISE HELLO HOLA CIAOOOOOOOOOOO

A fine song and great voice.
I like the green sofa...
I could listen to this, and Patsy Cline's "Crazy," and all manner of this realm - I know it would guide me gently into sleep, and I really need sleep lately.  I love this music.
While I totally get the "Just a Billie Impersonator" reaction, I think this is still "Quite Likable".
I really like her.  When I was doing d.j. work, I dedicated a whole program to rain songs.  This was one of them.  Lots of folks called in and wanted to know about her...(she helped with the drought).   {#Lol}  One of my faves by her, actually.
When Ella met Billie
She's just a good Billie Holiday impersonator. Play the original instead.
New releases from Billie Holliday are unlikely to say the least....
That being the case, I am very happy to listen to and appreciate Madeleine's offerings.
I'll bet this artist could even make an emema classy.
Wow, I considering that very thing right now. . .can't let a song influence me, can I?

Me2!

So introducing Billie Holliday to a new generation would be a bad thing or something?

if she came right out and called it Tribute to Billie or A Night with Billie or Billiemania it would be more honest and perhaps something you might go see in Vegas or in a cruise lounge.

I suppose that's a fair comment, but I choose to believe she just happens to sound like Billie, and is not imitating/exploiting her, per se.

wondering if anyone saw her at Blue Note in NYC this weekend (or going tonight)?
Just for the kindness voice

I saw her in Toronto last night and I have to agree - it was awful. The sound was poor but the arrangements were worse - hurried, cursory and superficial. Madeleine's singing was the same - her phrasing was a mess. I hate to be a hater, but I just want to warn anyone thinking of investing $65 in a ticket. (And I'm a fan!)
To be fair, the "acoustic" set, about a third in, was excellent. If only they'd stayed with that style....

Nice segue from the CJ's to this ...{#Chillpill}

Very pretty voice. Love it.
Bobby Peyroux likes this song. Bobby Peyroux don't come up for air. Y'all take a listen, you'll hear the deep sound comin' down from Bobby Peyroux.
Quite nice in a bland sort of way.......
enough of this frog eating fugasi!

Me likee.

Oh-I disagree. It IS blatantly stolen, and when I first heard it, thought it was a wonderfully loving homage—but after hearing an entire album's worth, it strikes me as a little pathetic and sad.

Add some popping and fuzz and I would call it perfect.
Luv it, great in concert - nice evening with the missus & music - thanks RP!
Could have sworn it's Billie Holliday. I like the singin', but still it sounds Billie. Only the noises of the LP disc are missing :)
Seems to fit with the mood established by Patsy Cline.
wow--she's as pretty as she sounds!!!
i think they are using her stuff on toilet paper adds. i'm totally ok with that.

Nice. Admirable. (for UK-based fans of The Fast Show !)
I suppose if you must channel someone, you could do worse than Billie. Still don't know if Ms.P has a voice of her own...

Certainly no problem as long as she avoids Germany today.

My girlfriend's been getting right into Miss Peyroux, and I've gotta say it's not hard on the ears at all. A pleasant, summertime-y sound...
And then a girl that can sing! (rare nowadays)
Hey guy, have some faith. Kline and Holliday are both gone. This generation needs someone to "pick up the torch (song)" so-to-speak. Besides, Peyroux should age like wine. As she gets older she'll get more blues'y and will become what you lament the loss of.

agree. saw her in concert before she made it "big" 5 songs in a 90 minute show. "Oh could we please have another sound check in between songs?" nuf said
How appropo Bill! We have had our first snow of the season besides the rain today!

LOL - This was exactly my experience, too! (Except heard it in the car on KABL in SF.) Thanks for reminding me of a funny little moment-in-time I had forgotten.
Bill this playlist is on fire right now!! (Aka. Amazing!)

She really is the Lady Day soundalike. Brilliant.

Yeah, maybe no body should have wasted time writing any more symphonies after Beethoven - since he'd alrady taken care of that department. MP offers a more contemporary interpretation of the genre. Love the original old guys, love her too.
Whew! Glad we got that cleared up.

Madeleine is bringing back a whole era of music I discovered by accident thanks to Sting's cover of "Someone To Watch Over Me". Everything she does is beautiful. I kinda wish for a little less "loungy" instrumentals, though. Bring some period pieces.
This whole album is wonderful.

I really enjoy this song, its so California. IMHO thats a good thing. I like that subtle steel guit. in the background.
... beautiful Madeleine
i hear you stubbz... I just heard it and it does sound like she is going to go in a different direction! what a chocolaty rich sound... AND she is coming to Asheville in March!! yum!
Shut the phone off. I thought she was going to say shut the...something else.
It helps on a bad news Friday to hear a soothing jazzy tune like this one. Life is jazz, full of unpredictable turns and twists, but the attitude of the music is self-assured, whatever happens, its gonna be ok. Roll with it...

Bill, you can play this any time you want as far as I'm corncerned!

I think Peyroux suffers from some stage fright or something. We saw her playing live last year and she's not a dancer/performer/star. She's just a singer/musician who's extremely talented and appears to be quite shy.
That's a good observation. A lot of times there are things that are beyond a shy performers control. A bad sound system, other musicians out of tune/who suck etc. And when they finally stand up for them selves and say something they get labeled as tempermental.
I think Peyroux suffers from some stage fright or something. We saw her playing live last year and she's not a dancer/performer/star. She's just a singer/musician who's extremely talented and appears to be quite shy. If you're looking for a "show," look elsewhere. If you're looking for solid music, then buy some tickets and watch her perform. (The night we saw her, everybody and everything was in tune.)

Not sure what I think. When someone sounds this much like Billie, why not just listen to Billie? See also Harry Conick junior and all of the other latter day crooners. It's not like the originals were sparse in their output.

have to agree with earlier comment about live performance sucking - saw her on the tube the other night (on the national broadcaster ABC in Australia I think it was) and was surprised at how nervous and out of tune she was. Studio recordings sound fine though.
how smoothhhhhhh

An especially nice pick for those of us here in the Golden State on this stormy day.
I have to disagree. I have seen her perform twice, both times it was a good show and it made for a great date. She is talented and charming. Maybe it was just a bad show? rasta_tiger wrote:
Saw her headline a show about a year ago. Sorry, but she was awful. We almost walked out and we NEVER do that. Not out of anger just disappointment. Out of tune, couldn't hold the melody, etc.. Love her records but sorry to say she's better in a studio than live.
I am a sucker for her voice... she could sing the alphabet and I would listen.
Absolutely love Ms. Peyroux's voice.

As the instigator of it, I have to agree. Sorry about that - a last minute decision that didn't quite work out.

Not bad. Perfect for when you're stuck inside grading projects on a day that is sunny... but oh so wintry. Le sigh. If you want to hear someone who channels Billie, give Katherine Whalen a try. I always have to go look at iTunes to double-check who's who.
