I was born in a cross-fire hurricane
And I howled at my ma in the driving rain,
But it's all right now, in fact, it's a gas!
But it's all right. Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!

I was raised by a toothless, bearded hag,
I was schooled with a strap right across my back,
But it's all right now, in fact, it's a gas!
But it's all right, Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!

I was drowned, I was washed up and left for dead.
I fell down to my feet and I saw they bled.
I frowned at the crumbs of a crust of bread.
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I was crowned with a spike right thru my head.
But it's all right now, in fact, it's a gas!
But it's all right, Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!

Jumping jack flash, it's a gas
Jumping jack flash, it's a gas
Jumping jack flash, it's a gas
Jumping jack flash, it's a gas
Jumping jack flash

A great R&R song with terrible lyrics.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to see them in their heyday but did catch them in '98 on the Bridges to Babylon tour in Syracuse. As a drummer/musician myself, I can tell you they tore it up that night and the sound was perfect where we were sitting, something that doesn't happen that often in the Carrier Dome.

I've seen plenty of lame-assed bands live (even been in a few), but the Stones are not one of them though they've had their off-nights sometimes.

Saw them on the Steel Wheels tour at Wembley Stadium. Thought they might be past it even then....completely wrong. They absolutely killed it.
one of my all-time fav bands. not my fav track of theirs, however still appreciate it. i imagine it would have been fun to have been in my teens/20s when this came out hearing it for the very first time.
I saw these guys in Birmingham , October 1963.  I'd already seen the Beatles in February 1963.

What a time for a teenager to be alive.  Awesome.  This 74 year old female loved every minute of it and indeed still has many memories of this time in her life.

I don't know how Jagger does it, he can still move just as he did back in '63 and  he's 79 !!.  I know from his school days that his father (a gym instructor) had him running a couple of miles every morning for years (which he still does to this day) before going to school, so I'm guessing that's had something to do with it..

Thanks guys for all the memories.
When this came out, my teenaged self thought it was a nice enough song, but likely the Rolling Stones last gasp.  I also turned down a chance to see Dylan in about 1973 for much the same reason.  My batting average has improved somewhat since then.
Thankful to have seen this band live on a couple of occasions-most notably at TX Motor Speedway when they schooled Matchbox 20, Dave Matthews and Smashing Pumpkins on how to put on a rock n roll show. Epic.

" WATCH-it  "

I was a tot when this song was released, and although a Stones fan from the very start, apparently not yet able to pronounce. Thus, the song has forever been known in the family as Jackie Fash.
\
Jagger at song start :

            "W A T C H - it"

   Hilarious!
Wait, you were joking, right? . . .
I saw them at Texas Motor Speedway with Matchbox 20, DMB and Smashing Pumpkins opening up. The Stones schooled the whole lot of them. Blew the stage away for 2 hours then flew off in choppers while fireworks lit up the sky. Epic!

my (drummer) friend has a quote he uses all the time, goes somethin like

"a mate of mine once said Charlie Watts was one of the worst rock drummers.. I mean, we hadn't even started drinking yet and this rot dribbles out of his mouth. I haven't spoken to him since"
RIP Charlie
Circa late 70s and a shout out to Mike Fox, gym teacher at Mount Bruno Elementary School in St. Bruno, QC, Canada, for playing this song and challenging his gym students to run around the gym and see how many layups they could score in the three and a half minutes the song lasted. For me, this song will always bring back that memory...that, and how much I suck at basketball.
one of the best R&R songs ever
It’s alright cause jumpin Jack’s pumpin the gas 😎
bloody hell, 3 classics in a row, can't do any work!

The Stones have made some great records ( the studio is a friend of many) but they are a lame-ass live band, no way near "the greatest rock-n-roll band" title they somehow got, probably gave it to themselves the same way M Jackson ordered himself to be called the "King Of Pop"

Au contraire!
I saw them in 1983. There were tons of pre-bands (I remember J. Geils Band). They all were really great. But when the stones entered finallay the stage they simply flashed everyone away. One of the best live performances I've ever seen!

Always reminds me of Fear and Loathing
it's ESSENTIAL      : )

I realize that Bill Wyman had left the Stones by the time this picture was taken.  Still, it doesn't seem right without him.

Is this the greatest RnR song ever? Just because of the guitar riffs...not even including the vocals, lyrics, and fantastic rthymn section.

Only SINGLE Stones song I would give a 10 to! Probably has to do with the spike in my head OR the beardless hag........not sure!   {#Stupid}
Damn, when they were good, they were REALLY good . . . OK, great!
btw, caught this on PSD; last play 2013??
C'mon Bill, keep this classic spinning!
Love this largely acoustic rendition.  Crossfire  hurricane, certainly.
"I was schooled with a strap across my back".    :-)
Always 10!
Happy Birthday Mick, 70 years young!
This song is the definition of Rock and Roll.  And you know what else?  It's a gas.

just some chair dancing...{#Drummer}  and pencil drumming...
 `cause it's all right!!!!

One of the very finest songs by one of the finest and greatest — but also one of the most over-rated bands — of all time.
Love this 45 cover - how powerful were these guys at the time this single was released?
This post apparently contained an image that was dragged into the post editor. Sorry, but any text contained in the post after this point has been lost.

Another flash to the past....as a member of a  teenage rock"n roll band in the sixties it was one of my favorites.  Then 1999 Bridges of Babylon Tour in Portland stood on my seat and played air guitar while Jagger screamed it.  Keep on Jump'n.
All I can think of is Whoopie Goldberg..... meh

I remember walking into the Shrine Exposition Hall in Los Angeles for a Ten Years After concert.  This was playing (er a blasting) on the PA system.  It was an amazing night and this song has been in my brain ever since.

but i hope Buddha and the latest incarnation of Vishnu would have handled that scene differently. {#Meditate}
Somebody told me once that the last line of the chorus is:  Jumpin' Jack Flash if ya catch that's gas.

A reference to a hidden meaning in the song?

I actually like that version even better - so much energy, and what a line-up!  Plus I love the break down in the middle - definitely one of the highlights of an already amazing concert.  Well, that and Billy Preston breaking out into dance in the middle of "That's The Way God Planned It."  Might have to watch that when I get home...

what are you going to say..
'oh, that bass drum sound could have been better'.
'too much reverb on the rhythm guitar'

I've always wondered if the Stones lifted the riff for this song from a Buddy Guy tune that was released about a year before called 'Just Playing My Axe' you can (click here) to give it a listen. I know the Stones were into the Blues so I'm sure it's not totally inconceivable that they were listening to Buddy Guy records back then.
yeah!!!
In a haze, I wandered into the Shrine Exposition Hall in L.A. for a rock concert many Moons ago. This new tune was blasting from the sound system. It still jumps me.

I hear this and see Brian Jones in huge sunglasses and their faces painted - Brian Jones couldn't have been around much longer after this. And wasn't this also after the Rock and Roll Circus filming?
10 impossible not to
I saw on television (I don't know when) that this was the song that essentially saved the Rolling Stones from their period of psychedelic experimentation.
This song never gets stale for me.
