Oh sweet sorrow
Let's write the book tomorrow
For I caught a glimpse
Been obsessed with it ever since
My eyes no longer weak
Amongst the clarity
That you pronounce in me

Won, you have won
My illumination has begun

I am happily indifferent
To the ones who have
Consistently been wrong
And all that once confined us
Like minutiae at its finest
Now is gone

Oh sweet sorrow
Let's write the book tomorrow

My eyes no longer weak
Amongst the clarity
That you pronounce in me
I am happily indifferent
To the ones who have
Consistently been wrong
And all that once confined us
Like minutiae at its finest
Now is gone

And all that that lies before me
Like the asphalt, lures me forward
Towards home
Home
I'm coming home

I like KD but I'd like to hear Karen Carpenter do this; which is impossible now, of course.

Am I the only one who finds her everpresent use of portamento somewhat annoying?

Yes, she has a nice, smoky, jazzclub timbre to her voice, but she's constanly sliding her notes up and down as if they were strippers on greasy poles.  Perhaps it's written into the songs she sings and she's just producing the notes as they're written, in which case it's the songs themselves that I'm having trouble appreciating.  If she's doing it to sound sultry, it's lost on me.  Of course, I'm just a guy, so maybe there's a reason I don't get it...

I saw your other comment about analysis and was curious to find the post that kicked it off... this is an interesting question.

I can say I'm not annoyed by her use of portamento, but I do find that annoying in most pop singers who seem to be more interested in vocal olympics than real emotion. Her slides are so smooth and feel deeply connected to her essence. I'll also say as a very weak singer, I aspire to being able to slide and stay in key - it's not an easy thing to do. It is really fun to slide, and to my ears, good slides are impressive, like the best jazz singers.

All that said, I love to hear one k.d. lang song at a time. I really dig her music, but only in limited doses.

Thanks hay -- I do make use of the PSD button from time-to-time.  However, I first make an attempt to appreciate (or at least understand) the new-to-me music I hear on RP.  I love music.  When I encounter music that I don't appreciate, I want to know why I don't like it -- what, specifically it is that turns me off of a particular tune.

Too analytical?  Perhaps, but I do the same with paintings, sculpture, architecture... it's the analysis of the work and of the feelings that it evokes in me that I find interesting.  This forum provides a way for me to not only vent my frustration with my own analysis, but also to obtain others' opinions on it in order to better understand what the music is doing to me, emotionally.   To me, simply hitting PSD would mean missing out on much of the experience of enjoying music.

Depends on who else is in the room. I find not everyone is as willing as I am to sit with something they don't care for. And in the interest of preserving their goodwill toward RP, I have no choice.
I'm not a huge fan of k.d. lang, although this track REALLY does it for me....just went 7 → 8 today cuz I find I really like this track.  Long Live RP!!
I may not always think it's the 'best thing I've ever heard' but her voice never fails to draw me in and make me listen.
More kd lang please. Her voice is velvet and she expresses with subtle passion. A wonderful library of music is available from her entire career. For example, Invincible Summer is my favorite summer album. Truly blissful.
What separates Lang from the other vocalists of her generation is the warmth and intelligence she brings to her performance. I could listen to her all day.

Me too.. (well, almost...Karen Carpenter towers above all).  Still, can never get enough of k.d. lang, but rarely hear her anymore - which is such a shame.

Karen Carpenter has a nice voice as well.......good ears there!
Karen Carpenter lives!
KD has such an amazing voice.  Saw her in concert this past summer and her live show illustrates how professional and entertaining she is.
Not a big KD Lang fan.  But I have to say I rather like this song.

You may want to re-methink your theory. If one were "hearing a bit too much Auto-Tune", then that person would be more likely to believe that the ability to sing well is not rare.  Just sayin'.  {#Wink}

Great. Whatta voice.
Fantastic album, lets hear some Bill jagdriver wrote:

in Colombia is not too popular, but i saw her a few days ago in internet (a chapter of later with jools) and i loved her... she has an amazing voice, no tricks... K.D. rules

She has such an alluring clarity and silkiness to her voice.

Ditto.
Cracks me up that the television CD ads in Australia present k.d. as mainstream country.  Don't think that would be the case in more narrow-minded countries. {#Curtain}

Old Woolman/Grass Valley alumnus here. Definitely hear the Dreamboat Annie!

Well put indeed. This is the most I have enjoyed k.d. lang I must say.
Hmm... Perhaps it's the stream I'm on, but when she goes low she sounds like a robot.  Smokiness, robotness... what's the difference?  ;)

128k AAC+, by the way, so I'm not really sure what's going on there.  I should note that this caused me to listen to a bunch of my other music to see if there's something screwy with my settings, but everything else seems fine!

Very nicely and accurately put.

Such a beautiful song, voice, tune.   Tant de grâce et de délicatesse.

In fact, the whole song sounds kinda like "Everybody's Talking", down to the banjo.

the banjo's entrance brought a big smile to my face

{#Iamwithstupid}  Given the banjo addition, this would sound great segued into Dreamboat Annie (Reprise) from Heart's first LP.
Very soothing, nice start to my Radio Paradise day.
i love this song, i just wish she was less MACHO —lol ....

Oscar
I have nothing but praise for this absolutety wonderful artist.
Always could sing!
let the voice melt you

I have to admit - I loved her Cow-Punk Stage days with Turnin me Round ... it was simply amazing - she was insaine live ... she seemed to be a mix of Jello Biafra meets Patsy Cline ... it was insaine

I saw her at the Savouy in Vancouver back in the late 80's early 90's and it was earth moving ...

I am continually endeared to the banjo. ;)

Great voice and so smooth, can't help but be totally relaxed.
"I am happily indifferent to the ones who have consistently been wrong." Genius.
Love it more and more everytime!!!(Love the voice too of course!!)

As always a beautiful rendition. Album rates 9 going up...
Sweet, soft album. Doesn't grab me like "Ingenue". Rather, puts me to sleep. Great lyrics, just a tad dull.
never heard this before... is that strange? I really dig her voice.
She makes singing sound so effortless. I love this tune. Must get this CD....
Intro really reminds me of Nilsson's music for The Point.
And what a beautiful voice it is...
Even if I hadn't heard the song before, that incredible voice is unmistakable.
The lyrics are a bit clunky and awkward, IMO. Nice enough sound, but in one ear and out of the other without leaving any trace of its passing, for me at least. 5 from the Nottingham jury.
9 10
I heart k.d.
Just beautiful.
i heard this for the first time last night on the jay leno show. it was so awe inspiring that i had to write a journal entry about it.
If I heard it correctly, "I'm happily indifferent to the ones who have been consistently wrong..." Amazing sentiment. Great voice.
I was just thinking that this sounds like someone who wants to sound like k.d. lang, but isn't quite pulling it off. I guess I was wrong.
Just bought this on amazon, thanks to RP. Wow... great CD! So far I like "Hymns" a little better, but I'm looking forward to hearing it many more times.
Wow indeed. I had to come look to see who this was. The Anne Murray reference below is pretty spot on.
Wow. This one really does it for me. Fresh and yet familiar.
Lovely. Just noted her re-release of early country stuff.. love the title: Reintarnation
Sublime voice.

Yeah, just like Anne Murray

wow, you said it :) It's as though her singing voice is more natural than her speaking voice...her spoken word tends to be choppy, and she seems to have difficulty finding the right words...but when she sings...ahh soooo fluid...
What a great, natural, unforced voice. She sings like most of us talk.
too short! Play more from this release please.
The banjo adds a nice touch.
