I've seen love go by my door
It's never been this close before
Never been so easy or so slow
I been shootin' in the dark too long
When something's not right it's wrong
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go

Dragon clouds so high above
I've only known careless love
It always has hit me from below
But this time 'round it's more correct
Right on target so direct
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go

Purple clover, Queen Anne lace
Crimson hair across your face
You can make me cry but you don't know
Can't remember what I was thinking of
You might be spoiling me too much love
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go

Flowers on the hillside blooming crazy
Crickets talking back and forth in rhyme
Blue river running slow and lazy
I could stay with you forever and never realize the time

Situations have ended sad
Relationships have all been bad
Mine have been like Verlaine's and Rimbaud's
But there's no way I can compare
All them scenes to this affair,
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go

You're gonna make me wonder what I'm doing
Staying far behind without you
You're gonna make me wonder what I'm saying
You're gonna make me give myself a good talking to

I'll look for you in old Honolulu
San Francisco or Ashtabula
You're gonna have to leave me now I know
But I'll see you in the sky above
In the tall grass in the ones I love
You're gonna make me lonesome when you go

There goes another 1, only got that because there isn't a 0 option
We usually listen to this as we drive up to to Hulbert, OK to stay at a monastery, and my wife recently made a great observation about the name of this album (which is about BD's divorce). There's a brilliant pun here: it's not just about getting run over by a train; the tracks also refer to the tracks of a record album--most of which on this album are pretty bloody.
Love me some Bob and how he can make something so anguished sound so up and optimistic.
That's...a lot of 1 scores - odd.... Literally
INGENIOUS
The owners of the low scores for this track ought to emigrate. I hear Kamchatka is nice at this time of year.
Simply great, timeless, the imagery, love it all.

shoulda stopped at the first sentence you wrote. the other is irrelevant. and this song from the days before #metoo. sorry can't find the puke emoticon. that said, bob IS one of the lonesome guys. do you blame him?

I sure don't mind being in a minority loving Dylan's voice!
His voice fits his lyrics.
One of Dylan's greatest songs. No ambiguous, cryptic or silly rhymes. This is ingenious, insightful, straight up word play and story telling.
Great song, always loved Shawn Colvin's cover of it too

Thanks for posting, pvg44.

Love it. This song makes me feel romantic.
NIce transition between previous Dylan song and this one.

1. The Byrds "Mr. Tambourine Man"
2. Neko Case "Buckets of Rain"
3. This

Quite the poet this man called Bob.  Not much of a singer though his voice oft-times fits the lyrical quality of the song.  He and Tom Waits are, in this respect, cut from similar cloth.  While something of an acquired taste there is, still, something of a timeless quality to the writing (if not the singing).  His Nobel prize is well deserved.  {#Clap}  Something for other musician/song-writers to aspire to, eh?

Solid candidate for the best album since Mozart checked out.
Interesting stretch of tunes here; bunch of Bob's songs covered well, then this. Nice for a drizzly gray hint-of-fall kinda day. I saw Bob at Red Rocks in '86; he did not connect with the audience, but performed well. Friends who saw him in 2012 were quite disappointed...
But I'll see you in the sky above

 So good.

Blood on the Tracks was done on the fly .He didn't like what he had recorded and had a deadline. Redid it all  in short time back home. Pretty great Minnesota musicians!

5 in a row from the minds of the two greatest poets in rock and roll history - apologies to Leanord Cohen
Neko Case — Buckets of Rain
Bob Dylan — You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go

Dylan was one of the icons of the counter-culture yet managed to maintain a healthy scepticism and some distance with regards to the 'movement', his own work and his own personal life.

He is truly a great.

Yeah...well...Right Now this is the third Dylan song in a row. And yes, covers count. So my question stands:

The Byrds "Mr. Tambourine Man"  —> Neko Case "Buckets of Rain" —> Bob Dylan "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go"

Hey MojoJojo, did the staring bear-clown ever eat that kid? Time's a wastin'!
Thanks for this sweet trifecta of Bob (and friends). Feels like comin' home.

I disagree. I quite like this song.
I'd say "Idiot Wind" is the weakest track (and it goes on too long).
Apologies to the RP member who borrowed the handle.
Otherwise, yes, an amazing album.
Weakest song on this classic release.

As I grow older and as I hear more of Mr. Zimmerman's work - his 'back catalogue' as it were, the more convinced I am that the man is in fact the genius he's been reported as being.

What cements that fact, is that, as far as I know, he's never 'sold out'. Also, some of the interviews I've read/heard from this musical sage have been incredible. He really does come across as a down to earth, grounded, spiritual person of the first order.

Don't worship this man, just respect him - incredible talent, unbelievable journey.

How Bill gets an appropriate amount of Dylan's geniuse on RP.  Two covers followed by a Bob redording.

No reason to boo that.  Girl has some soul in her voice, just hides it behind pop crap.  I've come to really appreciate her version of this song.
My favourite Dylan album.
Dylan as a songwriter/poet: brilliant. Dylan covers: great. Dylan singing: mute. At least, with his 60s voice - his latest blues albums where his adenoids have gone and voice dropped by an octave are pretty damn good.

Just about everyone does at some point(s), especially later in their careers.  At the time of this recording (37 years ago), I'm not sure he did.  I guess it depends on who you ask.  He probably relishes being a parody of himself.

Nope. Can't do it. I have tried and tried to listen to Dylan. Don't get it.

Terrific song from a terrific album.  Not my favorite but he definitely got his vision back after his Christian detour.

I'll accept at face value Steve Erlewine's AMG essay that Blood on the Tracks is about Dylan's divorce, especially this track. However, I'd always considered—and can't for the life of me remember where I heard/read this—that "Tangled up in Blue" was about his on-again/off-again involvement with Joan Baez, and the unsentimental, mayhaps acidic, "Diamonds and Rust" was her response. Both were issued in 1975.

Did the latter contain lines like "you're not nearly as deep as you think you are"?

He's just freaked out by the bear-clown staring at him while he sleeps.

Shawn Colvin also does a very nice cover of this song.  I just checked and it is in the RP library but the last play date Oct 07, 2000.  I could stand to hear it again.

Beautiful

*10* for the poetry
*10* for the music

Wonderful segue...Neko Case's cover of Buckets of Rain to Dylan's fantastic tune from the same album.  Great stuff.  And this song rates an 11.
This is the Bob I miss.  His shows are fun, and I really like some of his latest music, but this is the Dylan we've loved for so many years.

Yo, Andrian, you wanna watch Rambo? Read Rimbaud?
The lyrics + the delivery = solid 9. I have to reserve a 10 for some of his other songs that I like even better.  {#Cowboy}

Dull. I know this is a much admired album but for me, both his early songs and his more recent stuff are much better.
