I got a room at the top of the world tonight
I can see everything tonight
I got a room where everyone
Can have a drink and forget those things
That went wrong in that life

I got a room at the top of the world tonight
I got a room at the top of the world tonight
I got a room at the top of the world tonight
And I ain't comin' down, I ain't comin' down

I got someone who loves me tonight
I got over a thousand dollars in the bank
And I'm all right
Look deep in the eyes of love
Look deep in the eyes of love
And find out what you were looking for

I got a room at the top of the world tonight
I got a room at the top of the world tonight
I got a room at the top of the world tonight
And I ain't comin' down, no I ain't comin' down

I wish I could feel you tonight, little one
You're so far away
I wanna reach out and touch your heart
Yeah like they do in those things on TV, I love you
Please love me, I'm not so bad
And I love you so

I got a room at the top of the world tonight
I got a room at the top of the world tonight
I got a room at the top of the world tonight
And I ain't comin' down, no I ain't comin' down
I ain't comin' down

I know what you mean me too

And that's why you're dead, bc you didn't come down.
I'm listening to this and thinking... 'Yeah, hey. I like this.'

Look up to see who it is. No wonder I like it

It's Tom Hempy.
I ain’t comin down ❤️☮️
Doubt that I could ever hear this again without being a little misty for the loss of Tom...
I remember hearing this song the night Tom passed away. I imagined him up in heaven singing this to all of us. I was fortunate to have just caught one of his final shows at the Bowl a few weeks earlier. A friend gifted me the ticket. So glad I got to see them. I realized that night as the crowd were all singing along to Free Fallin' at the top of our lungs that TP was part of the fabric of the soundtrack to my life growing up in America in the 70's & 80's.  Love Mike Campbell's guitar phrasing in this, he's one of a kind, also the waffling keyboard, the bass, the drumming . Long live the Heartbreakers!
If this is Tom in a good mood what does he sound like when he's down?!

Don't tell me.

I already know. It's exactly the same.
They played  this the year he died during the Oscar's "In Memorium" tribute...  Heartbreaking (no pun intended).
Social distancing!

So many of his songs just make you feel good. Nothing wrong with that. :)

18 years later I could not agree with you more.
I sure miss Tom. His work was consistently good over the course of his entire career and I have no doubt he would have continued making great music for many years to come. Such a loss.
Great tune, one of Petty's best. In your face, kicks ass, takes names. Mike Campbell's masterful guitar work resembles a sitar in style and feel. A true genius.
Rest In Peace Tom
a turly great song from a truly great artist...

compare this to the foo fighters ahead of this - its like a rusty bike with bended flat tires (the foos) vs. the nasa spaceshuttle musically

This was your WEDDING song?
Jeeze. That's the oddest choice I've heard since "Every Breath You Take."

It's a song about being alone after a divorce.
So intense is the song for Petty that he refused to play it when Kate Hudson (then married to Chris Robinson whose Black Crowes were opening on the tour) asked him each night.

In a USA Today article he called it ""one of the most depressing songs in rock history...If anything will make you want to kill yourself."
But that's what you and your wife danced to?

Hmmm.

To each their own, I guess...

TJ

p.s. The song is a 9.

Every song can offer different things to different people:

"I got someone who loves me tonight
I got over a thousand dollars in the bank
And I'm all right
Look deep in the eyes of love
Look deep in the eyes of love
And find out what you were looking for"

No need to rank on someone (in moral superiority) for taking something different from the song.

Congrats to the OP on picking TP for such an important day!
Ruhe in Frieden - Deine grossartigen Lieder leben weiter
Tribute night with some old vinyl out here in Hong Kong.  Some terrific songs in all those old album covers.  RIP Tom Petty.
R.I.P. Tom.  : (

Had to mute this. Other RPers have written that Petty was going through divorce and the band was having problems during this album. Sometimes you're willing to put up with problems like that coming out in the music. Sometimes...not.

That, and the fact that their bassist Howie Epstein was on his race down the tracks that no one could save him from.  He's not on the album cover picture because he failed to show up for the shoot.  It was not a real great time in the history of the band or for Tom himself according to him.  Still, the fact that they were able to continue on and not fall apart says a lot about Tom and the Heartbreakers as a group.

As depressing as the back story is, I always have liked the sound of this song.

- "Even the losers get lucky sometime". Sometimes, it's exactly what I need to hear.

and

I can hear the heartache in the song. {#Sad}

I have this CD lurking around somewhere - someone gave it to me because she hated it. Gotta dig it out.

I love this song, but when I listen to it I feel it is more on the depressing side.
Tom Petty... always at the top!
Always loved this gem. Just added it to our set list encore. The descending guitar figure hook is killer.

this is sad..He used to be my hero.
He's got just a little more musical talent than John Hiatt but they are both very cool.

Interesting...this has a line that is almost exactly the same as an often-repeated line from a song by U2 called "Gone"... "I'm not coming down..." Petty's version: "I ain't coming down." Hmmm. Petty is an original; I'm not saying that he's copying U2. (He'd probably resent the inference.) But it's curious, nonetheless. The U2 song (I think) is about Kurt Cobain...I think. Don't know about this one.
Hey, great site! My first comment. Not bad. Man, Tom Petty is right up there with Pink Floyd as one of the most played classic rock people. Hmm, weird - first forum I ever saw where the newest posts are on top.

Although it is a slow and kinda depressing song....it is one of my favourites. However, having said that, I pretty much say that about every Tom Petty song....just love the music, the man and the band. They are absolutely fabulous to see in concert!
I gave it a 3 because it's Friday and I'm in a generous mood. He's done a few songs I really like, but none in a very long time. And when he's bad, he's awful. Boring, droning, whining, redundant. And those are the better points. I won tickets to TP back in the day when "World Class Rock" was around in So Cal and I gave them away.

this takes me back to college
There are few such simple pleasures as Tom Petty. There's just always room for his music.... I always, think, well, I MUST be tired of his stuff and then I hear it and it just glows. Nice...
Huh, a Tom Petty song where I can understand what he's saying. Like it!
one of my favorite TP tunes....
Most enjoyable
A tasty morsel....
The man continues to amaze me, not just with the amount of music he\'s put out, but the amount of GOOD music he\'s put out. Incredible. Rock on, Petty.
Tom Petty is the Herbie Hancock of rock \'n\' roll.
Though I respect Tom Petty and his attitudes towards the industry, I've never liked his music. Having said that, this song rocks! His voice is soulful, the lyrics are tender, and the whole thing evokes an emotional response in me that none of his other music has. I give it a 9 just for the way it makes me feel. I ain't comin' down!
Solid... Hmmm, I like it.
Playing in a band, for that long, can become limiting (apart from the advantages), but this still sounds adventurous! Nice, the way those different soundeffects are used, it all perfectly fit the 'sitting on top of the world' kinda lyrics.
i LOVE this one! my favorite Tom Petty song.
