Kiko and the lavender moon
Out playing, makes believe
Nobody can see
And then he waits
And then he fakes
And then he bends
And then he shakes
He plays and plays
Still playing till he
Goes off to sleep

Kiko and the lavender moon
Out dancing making faces at
A big black cat
And then he flies
Up to the wall
Stands on one foot
Doesn't even fall
Dance and dance
Still dancing till
He goes off to sleep

He always sleeps
Till the sun goes down
He never wakes
Till no one's around
He never stops
Can't catch his breath
It's always there
Scares him to death

Kiko and the lavender moon
Out dreaming 'bout green shoes
Haircuts and cake
And then he wishes
The world away
And then he kneels
As if to pray
He dreams and dreams
Kiko and the lavender moon

Back in '69 we often went out at night to the A-B from UCSD to blast off and blast our tunes.  Anybody's stereo would work but it was best when Larry and Walt brought their gear.  Larry was a genius who designed his own pair of 1.0 kw pulse width modulated amps that could be connected in stereo.  Walt would use his propane powered (cheapest, cleanest fuel of the day) Dodge Van to bring his 4 (highly efficient) Altec Lansing Voice of the Theatre speakers.   Unfortunately, due to the dismal male ↔ female ratio (35:1) it was usually a stag affair, but Larry (being ethnic Greek) always brought bottles of Ouzo and liked to show us Greek style dance patterns (a guy thing) and how to dance after picking up chairs (or other heavy items) with our teeth (Greek machismo).

First heard this gem on Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Show, the theme of this one being "The Moon"
Great stuff.

Nice song... The horns kinda make me a bit wobbly though...
3 Blind Mice...
Cop show? Don't get that refernce! They sound good but 'not' like LA east!

2 plays in the last 30, not a chance. This song is on such heavy rotation here at RadioParadise I feel as if I can play a note-for-note complete copy on my imaginary saxophone.

You were probably listening to our Mellow Mix. That's more repetitious than our Main Mix, and at that time only Main Mix plays were listed. That's now changed. The "last 30 days" numbers are calculated by our system, not entered by hand and subject to error.

Spooky in a good way.
Dear Bill:
Absolutely love the eclectic mix you bring to us every day.....breathtaking at times.  But please, for the love of God and all that is merciful, please yank this from your playlist....I think I have heard this one song more on your amazing station than Led Zepplin "Stairway to Heaven" at the end of any 1970's high school dance.
Dude, go to sleep with your mice.

I know what you mean....maybe it's the 'story telling' aspect of the lyrics....I'm only at a 7 rating currently and just decided to +1 to 8...Long Live RP!!
(PS - not sure who gave you a 'thumb down' vote on your comment....silly really....oh well to each their own I suppose)  *edit 4 years later - probably the same negative nelly who gave me a thumbs down too...still "Oh well!" and LLRP*
The ratings would indicate that this songs will keep getting airtime within Bill's great playlists, which is fine by me!
I love this song. It is so... I can't really explain...
WHATEVER!  This whole album is Wonderful.
boring and overplayed

Sometimes the unknowable can't be explained.... it bothers me too...
Got to admit I really like this song ....

I introduced the kidlets to the Sesame Street version.... Elmo and the Lavender Moon. They love it.....

"Elmo and the lavender moon
Out dancing making faces at
A big black cat.
And then they dance
Stands on one foot
Doesn't even fall.
Dance and dance
Still dancing as
He goes off to sleep"

Always makes me smile as I look at the kidlets sleeping....

I think that 2000+ ratings averaging 7 outweigh the  naysayers. Good Song.

What if you can enjoy it while hearing the nursery rhyme? What would that leave me with? {#Ask}
4 times in 30 days is 3 too much, this has worn out.
This one of the very few songs which have stayed in rotation for 25 years chez nous.

I agree. A very good song off of a very good album by a very good band.

I can't set this lower than 1. PSD Away!!!
These guys are so good live.  Love this whole CD.

BRILLIANT ORCHESTRAL ARRANGEMENT.
Just saw Los Lobos 3 weeks ago with the North Mississippi All Stars and the Tedeschi Trucks band.  Such an awesome night of music with all 3 band's various members sitting in with whoever was on stage at the moment.  Just a great night of live music.
Great American band.

Love, love, love this song. So glad it is still played.
Although I dislike this song, the disharmonious and repetitive strings/winds weird thingie makes me want more and more.

Like a trainwreck.

Or a family reunion.

How 'bout that PSD!
PSD !  this is not dreamy or hypnotic, those trumpets Pam - dam - dam and the ding-y-ding of the I don't know what are annoying.. It's too slow and they don't match the rest of the song, actually, I think without them the song would have more strength and would be more pleasant... 3

Love this and LL, in general! I have four tickets to a live show in September, which I'm really looking forward to because they are one of the bands I've always wanted to see live and I've read that they put on a great show. Hope they play some of my favs!

{#Cheers} ...... their best album - "Outstanding" song
Those horns are as sweet as the perfume of a pedestrian underpass.
The cover reminds me of Edith Ann ...

Similar to a Three Blind Mice riff—but in a minor key.

This is a frequent observation for this song I just found out.  I never noticed it before my scroll through all the comments.

Can never get enough of Los Lobos, especially Kiko, and this is one of the nest. Keep playing.
(Does it have a 3 blind mice riff?)
If it wasn't for this song, I'd never find a break to change the channel for a few moments to get the news...
