This is one of those songs that classic rock stations completely skip over, so it hasn't been ruined by being played daily on a Jack FM station.  As a result it hasn't lost it's magic and it takes me right back to the early 1970s.  Thanks for another great selection, Bill!
Forgot how good this song is.  Thanks, RP.  One request: after leaving this band John Cipollina started Copperhead (not the Southern rock band of the same name.)  Their song Roller Derby Star deserves a spin!

yay!!!

i wish tom petty would have covered this, too.
The first chord brought an instant wave of nostalgia.  I had this album (vinyl, of course, that's all there was then) back in the day.  Could it really be 53 years ago?
Volume UP
Nicholas Christian Hopkins!
Bridge is to die for. RIP brother.
I have this on a 45 of all things.

Like many comments on songs from that era and genre (hippie music as you inferred) my response is, you had to be there. There is just no way most 20-somethings these days can understand music from that era because there was a certain vibe, that really only lasted a short time, and if you weren't there to experience it then you just have no clue...and I can understand that, so no offense meant....but you just had to be there.

I wasn't there, but I can dig it.

And a 10.  A favorite from first listen when this was brand new.

I wasn't talking about when the song came out, just that it was his song when he was smoking crack in the late 80s (the term "crack" was coined circa 1985) thru mid 2010s.
Of course he was into acid when the song came out; he just repurposed it.
Love Nicky's Piano on this.

I sooo agree 👍💭
Totally love this song--loved QMS, too, especially their song "What About Me," which was one of the anthems of my youth!!
I missed my time.  Have friends who got to see these bands in SF live at the legendary venues
John Cipollina.  Left us way too early.

I'm not sure you're right about that. I was approx. minus 20 years old at the time of this release, yet I've come to appreciate this kind of music a lot. I think maybe watching the DVD of Woodstock 69 helped - some real bangers on there and a lot of zeitgeist vibe to get you inspired. Despite having that as a potential 'way in', I don't think you should dismiss young people's ability to appreciate a certain style of music just because they weren't there at the time. Seems a bit... exclusive.... to me; a bit like telling someone 'you just couldn't understand' something rather than helping them to understand it. Not that I wouldn't have wanted to be there - and I almost envy you for it, as someone with first hand experience of the era! - but you might find younger people are more willing than you think to adapt their ear to past sounds, provided they are helped to find the right way in.
Sublime.

When Dino Valenti is in Quicksilver Messenger Service, I'm out. Just like the great Deke Leonard said, and just like Cipo was right after this.

I've had RP playing since this morning and just cannot get enough! My youth relived! Singing along like crazy all day. Thanks Bill!
Just need Fat Angel by Donovan or the Airplane to follow. Yeah, at this hour the live Airplane version of Fat angel turned up to eleven!

OH BOY!!  This is another of the LPs my dad/step-mom had in their-turned-my collection.  Out of about 1000 total records, I have vivid memories of maybe 100 total, and remember I was between 6-12 years old when I got to play with them (which for an only child was a great companion!) and it wasn't until my HS days that I found out this was my dad's "getting high" song.  Unfortunately, getting high for my dad wasn't a recreational thing; in fact it was such an addiction that I'm surprised I even like this song for all the shit I put up with as a youngster because of his habit.

And I LOVE this song.  Somehow the idea of my dad hitting the crack pipe and listening to this song actually makes me smile.  Like, with all the pain, destruction, guilt, money problems, etc. etc., that being a crack addict adds to life, realizing the release he got from it and how happy he must have been listening to this....yeah....seems weird I know...esp. since I'm not doing great at finishing my thought.

So I rate this a 9 and yeah...Long Live RP!!

Maybe I'm missing something here, S-curvy, but I checked out the first 20 or 25 PPopp posts and found them to be very complimentary.

Nicky on the ivories is magical. Whole band with such talent.
I was 20 years old in the summer of '70, really on my own for the first time in my life.  My friends and I lived and loved this song every day.  Good times, troubled times.  Freak on.
I wish i was there..

The piano solo is definitely long enough to have another hit (or three) before the lyrics come back.
was entertaining to read comments, but this is good music even if you "haven't been there to feel it"

You can achieve that goal by buying a Hummer.  Or hitting the PSD button.  Whichever one fits your bank balance.

Just say no to fresh air.
Interesting segue: "How Dark is Gone" by Ben Harper ==> this. And from this to "Forever Loving Jah" by Bob Marley. Yeah...works for me.

I don't really know QMS but I love this song. Heard a snippet of it years and years ago and searched for it fruitlessly. I can't remember if RP clued me in but I love that it gets regular airplay here.
Great song from that era!

Wrong album cover. This song is from the latter day dregs of a band that had something unique for a brief time. By the time this album came out that spark was merely warm and dying. I admit to liking this a bit when it was a staple of FM radio, but the record was not worth the effort. It was one of the few I gave away when I left home (some of which I later regretted, but not this one).

Fixed.

I agree on your assessment of the album, BTW.
Love the song - BUT - the song "Fresh Air" is on the QSM album "Just For Love" released in 1970.  In case anyone is keeping score.

We all want to feel good and set our minds free. It's just harder for some than others.
Forgot how good this song was! Thanks for the reminder. :)
Nice follow up to Ella.
Didn't work then. Doesn't work now. Quicksilver deserves proper quarantine and disposal.

Critical music that helped chart a more adventurous path in my senior year in high school.
I've still got my 45 of this.
Tasty 1970 nugget.

not your average hippie music ... or band
Shweeet !!!!
Wow, haven't heard this in ages - takes me right back to college.

Good tune, wonder why it's slipped off the radar? Of all the so-called hippie anthems, this one always sounded good to me. I'm not going to name any names, but there are a few tunes from that era that make me say: "What were we thinking?"
John Cipollina was a great guitarist, one of the best of the SF hippie scene. RIP
Not sure why, but of all of the so-called hippie anthems from about 50 years ago, this one still sounds somewhat "fresh" (to me, anyway).

I lived that wonderful era and this song is just as good today as it was then.  As Dragon said "you had to be there."
more cowbell !!!  i meant.... more reverb !!! ....

agree totally with those who state " you had to be there "

Have another hit of Fresh Air.
What a trip! I recall hearing this on the radio as a kid, and I dig how the San Francisco Sound of the times is still loud and clear, right down to the similarities of Dino's vocals to Jefferson Airplane's Marty Balin, who managed The Matrix club and had a lot of influence in QMS; in fact, these bands were tightly interlinked...
Wickedly cool piece has been in my head from the moment I first heard it decades ago, still taken by it's chorus, and awesome musicians, love it
Oh, this is not the good Quicksilver. It made a larger impact on the radio than their earlier, much much better material, but the inclusion of Dino Valenti as the lead singer, as well as the weaknesses of the song, fell far short of their potential. I bought this album after finding happy Trails to be uplifting and probably one of the best live recordings of the era. This album never approached that and signaled the end of the band (at least as I see it).
This one is soooo 60's.  And that's a good thing...what a great song!

A great tune. I got it on vinyl x 2 and cd x 1. I heard there was a 78 rpm version out there someplace, too. saw 'em play it in concert. This still sounds great after thirty-five years only the fresh air is a whole lot better. They say, that is, not that I would know from personal experience anything about the fresh air going around these days.

Strong words from someone who wasn't even 10 when this song came out and has another QMS song as a 2. Personally, I prefer to focus on the music. This song sucks.

Love it- for all the shit that was going on in the world at the time, the music was pretty damn fine indeed. Thanks for the flashback.
Sherman, set the way back machine for 1967... Yeah, Baby!
a blast from the past - recorded in the grand canyon :^D still a great song though!
how dated? i've got this on a 45! hey, i still like it!
fresh? a bit much on the reverb for me... sounds pretty dated.
What can I say? This song is the best thing to come out of the "SF Sound" days of the late 60's. It is still fresh and wonderful to listen to after all these years.
