Eddie waited 'til he finished high school
He went to Hollywood, got a tattoo
He met a girl out there with a tattoo too
The future was wide open

They moved into a place they both could afford
He found a nightclub, he could work at the door
She had a guitar and she taught him some chords
The sky was the limit

Into the great wide open
Under them skies of blue
Out in the great wide open
A rebel without a clue

The papers said Ed always played from the heart
He got an agent and a roadie named Bart
They made a record and it went in the charts
The sky was the limit

His leather jacket had chains that would jingle
They both met movie stars, partied and mingled
Their A&R man said "I don't hear a single"
The future was wide open

Into the great wide open
Under them skies of blue
Out in the great wide open
A rebel without a clue

Into the great wide open
Under them skies of blue
Into the great wide open
A rebel without a clue

The other day I was thinking of how many songs Petty wrote that I know the words to just from being a casual (e.g. not fanatical fan), and it is several dozen. This is one of them. Petty has an amazing legacy. Still miss him.
I have always loved the thought that "the future is wide open" and "the sky is the limit" — keep creating whatever you create, everybody.

Most unassuming Icon I know of. Glad he shared his talent with us.
Hope he's out there running down a dream with his fellow Wilburys Nelson and Lefty.

Umm. I think you mean George Harrison and is Roy Orbison Lefty?    only Jeff Lynne and Dylan haven't 'traveled' on.

Unlike Eddie, Tom was the rebel with a clue and stood his ground against the myriad of inequities artists faced in the music industry -
You will be missed greatly Tom.

Thanks Bill for your words. It was a great loss for music.

Yeah Bill....wish there was a better reason too...  RIP Tom {#Cry}
I love Tom Petty's voice and style (RIP), but have never been a big fan of his hit songs. Maybe because they get played endlessly. Like the deeper cuts!
Hero. Legend. Top songwriter.
i knew Tom Petty first with this song, now that just gone, no artist just passed away in two years made me so sad and empty as he did.

one comment for this song?!   this is one of the great ones.  A song about freedom, beauty, innocence....  I love it.  Makes me wish I was 17 again.

(and no cracks about how this was popular when I WAS 17.  mmkay?)

Nothing would make me wish I was 17 again.
God bless Tom Petty.

Great song and Johnny Depp was great as Eddie (along with Faye Dunaway) in the classic video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iT8RnVm1k_8

Don't forget the young Matt LeBlanc at the very end of the video as the "new" Eddie Rebel.

Perfect on a sunny winter Friday morning, leading into the weekend.
