I got to bet that your old man
Became fascinated with his own plans
Turned you loose, your mama too
There wasn't a thing that you could do
I got faith in you, it's a razor love
That cuts clean through
I got faith in you, it's a razor love
That cuts clean through

You really made my day
With the little things you say
Looking through the window at a silhouette
Trying to find something I can't find yet
Imagination is my best friend
Got to look out for the greedy hand, greedy hand
Make a living like a rolling stone
On the road there's no place like home
Silhouettes on the window

Who was it made your eyes flicker like that
Tell me baby, how'd you get the knack
You came to me with open arms
And I really took you down the track
And all I've got for you is the kind of love
That cuts clean through
All I got for you is a razor love
That cuts clean through

You really made my day
With the little things you say
Right now I'm looking through the window at a silhouette
Trying to find something I can find yet
Imagination is my best friend
Got to look out for the greedy hand, greedy hand
Make a living like a rolling stone
On the road there's no place like home
Silhouettes on the window.

You really made my day
With the little things you say

Reminds me of "Captain Jack" by Billy Joel, though that is a far superior song.

I not only agree with the fellows below, but I can second the motion by having had a brief but meaningful encounter with NY when he was in NYC in '14 on an (ultimately abortive) portion of a documentary on his North America looping Lincvolt — his phat baby Lincoln tricked out with biodiesel, electric and regular ol' gas. I was the location manager here in the Big Apple, we were all set for a day of traveling, including an hour-long early morning shoot in Times Square, a few hours of a driving meet-up with Steve Colbert (and, unfortunately, as well, some dude named Bill O'Reilly).  Until the car became dysfunctional. Something about the power train batteries, which were previously made in the USA by a company that had been purchased recently by a Chinese corp. C'est la vie. He didn't want to burn gas and there was no biodiesel available.  Mr. Young was a bit peeved, he spent a good deal of time in an—energetic—conversation on his cell phone.  My meet and greet was limited to a handshake and a few words of my disappointment and his irritation. Instead of a day in the follow car, I watched him put the Lincvolt back on the trailer for the long trek back to California. Funny or fateful that his beautiful cream-colored car of energy evolution started the trip home in Hoboken, NJ, down by the River.

bronorb, I totally agree with your disagreement. NY is a virtually a music institution. As far as I'm concerned, he can make music to his death bed and he'll surpass many of his contemporaries by sheer mystique and poetry. Not to mention that he can play the f out of that guitar.
This song may be in the first half of his arc, but it's timeless. If it's built to last, it's still current. No one has stopped listening to early Crosby, Stills and Nash (and Young) because some later tunes seemed to lack the early verve.  And for a musician to write music like this, and then push for this

www.lincvolt.com

is a rare persona indeed.

While this song is not one of his best, Neil contributed a lot of amazing music in his lifetime. The thing that I love about the guy is that he never gave a rat's ass about what anyone thought of anything he did. He followed the music wherever it took him.
That kind of attitude is rare, in fact, these days, completely absent in the music world.
To suggest that he should have quit after he recorded After The Gold Rush is an extremely cynical and short-sighted observation.
And by the way, millions of Neil fans would agree with me on this.

I just don't get it, he is consistently out of time and tune, and I read everywhere that he is not a nice man.   why dont we chain him to Van Morrison and send them to another planet, preferably that big shiny one up there!
Perfection. Thanks RP for playing this.

Nice analysis there two-thumbs-down.  The key word in your sentence is "seems".

What a treasure Neil Young is, heard his interview with Teri Gross on NPR this week.

Of course you are 100% correct. I have to laugh at the comments of those who whine about said vocalists. Apparently anyone who doesn't have a "pretty" voice "can't sing" (like Picasso can't paint; "Look where he put the eye!").  {#Rolleyes}
Not a fan of their singing? Fine, but to say they "can't sing" is just absurd.

This needs a different voice......{#Grumpy}

For a lot of years, I just couldn't stand his voice.  Even now, I don't think he can sing.  But I don't mind so much now that I and my music tastes have matured.  My tastes have moved toward music with depth, feeling, and creativity.  Things I would have hated 15 years ago send me to a happy place now, and things I loved then have either faded from memory of have become staid and boring (in many cases).

Even my wife, who was raised in a house full of the Beatles, Neil, Clapton, Dylan, and many of the other greats, couldn't stand Neil Young for years.  Now we both can't help but smile when a good Neil song comes on somewhere.

I love everything Neil does.

They aren't pre-programmed, robotic "voices", a la Britney Spears.  Their voices reflect the pain that we all face.  In other words, they have heart.

Ogg rulles!  I must add that I only knew about the .ogg stream because of a fellow listener, too.

One day he was just playing alone in the room, nailed it, turned to the engineer who thought he'd been practicing and found out the tape hadn't been rolling.

Sounds like he came back and nailed it a few years later, however...

Pretty song. A bit of "American Dream" in the chorus (reporters crowd around your house, going through your garbage like a pack of hounds ...) but I like it.
My daily neil fix has been fulfilled...by David Bowie and by Neil Young.

I rated this a ten. I went to my first concert in 91/92 and this song live was amazing. To see an arena of people singing this and waving their hands in the air was quite a moving experinence for a 15 year old. I still believe in the message. Well don't I feel stupid! A single artist can evoke the whole range of appreciation (or lack thereof), depending on who you ask. Neil is a classic example of this -- you'll see comments from both sides of the fence, and to extreme degrees. As someone else posted eariler, I'm far more into the music than the lyrics. While I acknowledge that Neil is a great lyricist, the musicianship is what I listen to, and Neil's is not on the higher end of that scale in my book. Just my $0.02 . . .
Well, he made me get quiet and pay attention for three and a half minutes. Gotta go get my ass in gear now. C-ya----------------------------

It's so funny you asked - I was thinking of something along the lines of Elvis Costello's "Peace, Love and Understanding" and viola! he plays Elvis, (Spooky DJ)...
Okay, I love Neil Young, do like this song but- man the set this morning is bumming me out. The tone this morning is so somber and plodding, I need a little caffeinne music right now...

Right you are ;) Sometimes (often?) I wish I could listen to music, uninhibited, like I once used to.

I'm guessing you're not a guitar player? From a technical standpoint he's actually quite sloppy. That doesn't mean that what he plays is not good -- it obviously appeals to many. One of the great things about music is that it's so subjective. Just my $0.02 . . .
NO MORE NEIL...PPPPPPPLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAASSSSSSSEEEE!
