I love this album. For many in 1978, this wasn't "Like A Hurricane II" or "Still Searchin' for the Heart o' Gold Again" so it didn't get much of a listen. I liked it first listen and still do.

Maybe you're unfamiliar with Neil's other socially conscious work such as: Alabama, Southern Man, Ohio, Rockin' in the Free World, Mideast Vacation, Vampire Blues, Homegrown, Let's Roll, Welfare Mothers, and of course, Monsanto Years.

I really like the live version of this on Year of the Horse. Played half-time, and the Horse's gritty grind fits the lyrics well.

I always felt this album was a labor of love for and with Nicolette Larson. Saw her with Commander Cody (Tales from the Ozone?) when I was in late teens. Good times.

Neil Young  will be performing in the Memphis in May Beal St music festival. I have seen him live 3x.  He puts on a good show in that he has decades of material and spans several genres.

This is one of his best albums but it never gets much recognition. 

And Nicollette Larson vocals on several songs is a bonus. She does kind of a Linda Ronstadt role.

Interesting comment.  However we define "it", I agree that it sounds great and certainly would enjoy hearing Radio Paradise Inc. playing more country/acoustic folk/feminine stuff.  Like this crazy song that follow....

Nicolette Larson was one of my favorite back up vocalist w/Neil. She has a few very good solo albums as well. Neil is an 11.

Lord of the Rings? Wha?  Neil Young recorded the album Comes a Time in 1978.
J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings was first published in three volumes in 1954-5.

I wouldn't call Comes A Time one of Neil's country records, since most of the songs are more just acoustic folk tinged rather than country, though this song and a couple others do have a country flavor and some steel guitar twang. But I'd call it one of his best acoustic records, with a lot of pretty open chord songs and harmonies, and great songwriting.

Probably my most fondly remembered Neil Young albums. One of those records that takes me back to a very specific time in my life. By far my favorite of any of Neil's country/acoustic/whatever you want to label them recordings.

I'm thinking that in order to truly appreciate his "country" period, people would have to start from the beginning of his career and just trace it to the present. I'd be okay doing that, but it's not for everyone. So, taken individually, I'd say that "Human Highway" is not one of Mr. Young's best efforts. "Comes A Time," however, is. And now, listening to K.D. Lang's vapid, lackluster rendition of "Helpless," I have to change my mind. "Human Highway" runs circles around it.
