I come down from the misty mountain
I got lost on the human highway
Take my head refreshing fountain
Take my eyes from what they've seen.
Take my head and change my mind
How could people get so unkind.

I come down from the crooked mansion
I went lookin' for the D.J.'s daughter
Since that day I heard it mentioned
That my name is on the line.
Now, my name is on the line
How could people get so unkind.

Now, my name is on the line
How could people get so unkind.

I come down from the misty mountain
I got lost on the human highway
Take my head refreshing fountain
Take my eyes from what they've seen.
Take my head and change my mind
How could people get so unkind.

No problem

Right? Besides, he'd already made millions selling half his catalog to the same conglomerate that includes Black Rock. NY is a 1 in my book now, sad to say.

The perfect example of the anti-masculine.  Well, he's Canadian so I repeat myself.

Edit:  east Canadian.  I know the Westerns are still men.
Nicolette Larson vocals... if you wanted to know.
I'll keep sounding like a broken record.

This is one of his better albums.  Thanks RP for playing a few cuts from it.

Maybe you're unfamiliar with Neil's other socially conscious work such as: Alabama, Southern Man, Ohio, Rockin' in the Free World, Mideast Vacation, Vampire Blues, Homegrown, Let's Roll, Welfare Mothers, and of course, Monsanto Years.

Perhaps you need to work through that list before you pass judgement. Just sayin'

I love this album. For many in 1978, this wasn't "Like A Hurricane II" or "Still Searchin' for the Heart o' Gold Again" so it didn't get much of a listen. I liked it first listen and still do.

more neil
I really like the live version of this on Year of the Horse. Played half-time, and the Horse's gritty grind fits the lyrics well.

This album came out as I was learning the guitar, and this song was one I find I could play quite easily. It brings back so many happy memories. Actually, I was competing for the attention of a girl, and the other "suitor" would also play it. I added more "hammer" notes and I got the girl.

If I knew this was the key to relationships!!
I always felt this album was a labor of love for and with Nicolette Larson. Saw her with Commander Cody (Tales from the Ozone?) when I was in late teens. Good times.
Neil Young always looks like he has a cocaine hangover even when he doesn't.
Back when you couldn't dance and spin too hard or the record would scratch
Pure. Simple. Extraordinary.
You GOTTA love Neil!

Neil's asking the Big Questions on this one. There are no answers.
Oh, this is such a great album.  Thanks for the reminder of this great duet.

Neil Young  will be performing in the Memphis in May Beal St music festival. I have seen him live 3x.  He puts on a good show in that he has decades of material and spans several genres.
Got to dig this lp out.
wow sweet
This is one of his best albums but it never gets much recognition.

And Nicollette Larson vocals on several songs is a bonus. She does kind of a Linda Ronstadt role.

Makes me want to dig out my whiskey jug and play along.
Classic album....remember the day this came out.  A Chicago radio station played the whole album and I loved it on first listen and I still do.

Love this album. RIP Nicolette

Neil sounds so good with a female singing melody.  Wish he'd do more of it.

Interesting comment.  However we define "it", I agree that it sounds great and certainly would enjoy hearing Radio Paradise Inc. playing more country/acoustic folk/feminine stuff.  Like this crazy song that follow....

Be seeing you at the Fox...
Q? why grade Neil? or any of his songs?

Thanks to RP, I'm slowly warming up to Neil Young, after many years of respect but intolerance. (The guys I work with have helped, as well.)

Neil is channelling his inner Woody Guthrie.
Neil sounds so good with a female singing melody.  Wish he'd do more of it.
Nicolette Larson was one of my favorite back up vocalist w/Neil. She has a few very good solo albums as well. Neil is an 11.
Great song from a classic album.

Hearing this tune, and others on this album, makes me sad at the loss of Nicolette Larson (1952 - 1997). I loved her voice, she provided backing vocals for many artists during her career, most of the bands I enjoy. But to me, she seems to stand out on this album, and made a small hit with her own recording of Neil's "Lotta Love". She was taken too early at 45.

Indeed .. Tylenol and Valium will do it to you every time.  Her passing was a significant loss to the music community.

"My name is on the line" ... hummm .... reminds me of my draft notice.

Lord of the Rings? Wha?  Neil Young recorded the album Comes a Time in 1978.
J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings was first published in three volumes in 1954-5.
But I don't think 'misty mountains' has anything to do with LOR, it just goes nicely with 'human highway'.  {#Wink}

I stand corrected.  Thank you.

Heh - another vote for Neil from the South - he's always been a favorite of mine and the only thing about Neil is that I can't decide if I like him best un-plugged or when he throws it all to the wind and rocks out.

Thanks for making me smile from VA, Neil rocks
This is a great CD, IMHO.
See Led Zeppelin for all your Lord of the Rings reference needs.

love all the songs on this cd, except motorcycle momma. yuck!

A breath of fresh air after that John Butler crap.
I wouldn't call Comes A Time one of Neil's country records, since most of the songs are more just acoustic folk tinged rather than country, though this song and a couple others do have a country flavor and some steel guitar twang. But I'd call it one of his best acoustic records, with a lot of pretty open chord songs and harmonies, and great songwriting.
I never would have heard this if not for RP. Thank you. I have come to really love Neil Young.
I think this is such a pretty song: the voices intertwining, the banjo and guitar, and the poetry.

AWWWWHSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The world needs more of this. regards,
Probably my most fondly remembered Neil Young albums. One of those records that takes me back to a very specific time in my life. By far my favorite of any of Neil's country/acoustic/whatever you want to label them recordings.

I'm thinking that in order to truly appreciate his "country" period, people would have to start from the beginning of his career and just trace it to the present. I'd be okay doing that, but it's not for everyone. So, taken individually, I'd say that "Human Highway" is not one of Mr. Young's best efforts. "Comes A Time," however, is. And now, listening to K.D. Lang's vapid, lackluster rendition of "Helpless," I have to change my mind. "Human Highway" runs circles around it.
Deliver me from neil!

i like Neil well enough, but his country period drives me nuts. having said that, this is far from the worst bit from those albums.

A much more accurate characterization of the satanic Neil.

Neil Young is more down to earth than many other superstars. I think he would disapprove being called this! :)
I don't hate it! You have no idea how big a feat that is for me when it comes to Neil Young. Yes, this is probably my favorite Neil Young song ever.
