Growing up in the 00s hearing the endlessly overplayed Smooth I developed a dislike for Santana. A shame because this is such a great gem. I need to get into this entire album at least and explore his earlier discography.

I'm not usually a fan, but I do enjoy this album and this song.  He doesn't get into his stock phrases/ tricks until near the end of the album.

GREAT TUNE!!  I did some research. "Yacht Rock" is soft/ mellow rock, aimed at a middle aged demographic.Inappropriate genre label for this tune!!

Oh I love that shimmery sound when the organ comes in at the start of the main piece! I used to have the cover of the LP up on my wall and have loved this album since it came out. Masterful playing by the whole band.

I find Santana's music quite varied, eclectic, and many times surprising, but always tend to be able to recognize that Santana undertone, that style. This is wonderful! I don't think I've ever heard this, and I'm 51.

I saw Santana live when this album came out. I remember him spending a lot of time standing in front of his amps tuning and strumming and listening to feedback. Just like the start of this song … wasn't crowd pleasing.

Heard Caravan Serai as soon as RY and Manuel began prior to this...  powerful association with a past desert musical event, hearing this is as evocative as a scent can be in triggering memories. Love the ritards, pacing and flexibility in time...

This record was near of the Jazz rock fusion sounds like Return of forever ( C. Corea ), Mahavishnu Orchestra and Larry Corryel band and some more that I got to know and see in the middle of 70's :)

Fantastic! I have been testing these Big Theil speakers and I just finished listening to Welcome. Then this comes on. Hope the neighborhood likes it as much as I do! I saw Carlos Santana when he was playing with Buddy Miles ans it was fantastic. His records around this time had nearly religious significances to us. Or maybe it was the drugs.

Santana was born in 1947, was 25 when this record was cut, only the 4th of his recording career. Incredible, youthful passion to All the Love of the Universe, Every Step of the Way, and the album as a whole. Borboletta should be on the playlist too. Flor de Canela/Promise of a Fisherman. and Practice What You Preach. Some people, hooked on Beck, Hendrix, or Vaughn, can't get into Santana's groove, but I can't get too much of it.

Oh, gosh, first year at college and this comes out, confusing millions of Santana fans who expected another Abraxis.

But it was one of the heralds of fusion. And unfortunately fusion turned out to be an evolutionary dead end music-wise, but for about a decade we got a lot of very good music.

Saw Santana at a university arena show around 1978, what an incredible incandescent performance.  I took my kids to see him last year, my 14 year old daughter practically had to be dragged.  She stood and screamed/snapped cell phone shots for two+ hours, was totally blown away.  Maybe there's hope for the younger generation.

Saw John McLaughlin at a college gig  in 1972 on his Birds of Fire tour. That show is responsible for at least 10% of my hearing loss.  A couple King Crimson concerts did additional damage.  But I do remember the shows, though   {#Laughing}

These 70s Santana albums are an important place jazz went in the 1970s. They are a direct follow on from a lot of great 60s jazz like Pharaoh Sanders, Alice Coltrane, Miles Davis. They bring super musicianship together with a spiritual and intellectual journey. It's not 'world music', but they melt so many different cultures and musics into one.

Caravanserai is a band standing at the top of a musical and spiritual mountain.

Not as commercial as the first three lp's but none the less a masterpiece. The music is so spiritual and just flows. Definitely one of my

This number bores me numb, but that's just personal taste - others will love it to bits. Maybe it is "self-indulgent", but then so is most, if not all, popular music - few musicians go into the trade out of some selfless urge to bring music to the masses, rather they usually make music to express themselves, and if the public like it then so much the better and they become rich. I'm hard-pushed to think of an artiste/band that couldn't be called "self-indulgent". There's always the mute button, mate. Shame there are no killfiles, mind.

One of Santana's most brilliant, soulful and non commercial albums. Brings back fond memories of a girl I used to date and this album put us in a liplock and more. Sorry you naysayers don't get it. Light the candles and incense. Thanks Bill.
