I hear a voice from the back of the room
I hear a voice cry out
We want something good

Well come on a little closer let me see your face
Yeah come on a little closer by the front of the stage
I said come on a little closer I got something to say
Yeah come on a little closer wanna see your face

You see I met a devil named buena buena
And since I met the devil I ain't been the same, oh no
And I feel alright now I have to tell you
I think it's time for me to finally introduce you to the
Buena buena buena buena good good girl

It's comin' to me
Yeah it's comin' to me
Now I think I know
What it is you need
I know some people wanna make a change
But I know how to make it go away

You see I met a devil named buena buena
And since I met the devil I ain't been the same, oh no
And I feel alright I have to tell you
I think it's time for me to finally introduce you to the
Buena buena buena buena good good girl

Same! I saw so many great shows in the 90s. In fact, in one 3 night span I saw Elvis Costello & Imposters (with Crash Test Dummies), Soundgarden and Tori Amos. Talk about eclectic!

Even cooler was that it was done with a two string bass.  Gives new meaning to rhythm.

Great sax work by Dana Colley

Every time he sings that "buena buena buena" part I keep thinking he's going to break into "Tutti Fruiti".

Extraordinaire groupe. J'adore Morphine.

When UR Hi this tune is really.....really .....better than when UR NOT!
& when UR NOT it still is a sassy Number!
This sax player knows how to rock!

I've always loved Morphine's music. That bass. That saxophone.
Noodly Bass.. Sassy Sax...Bueno!
I just went up to a 9 purely for the sax
Sometimes RP reminds me of the record store I used to work at,
Sometimes the mix is impossible haha, like the one from the Putumayo Turkish song right before this jam,
And it works!

Peace and Love

TT The Bear's! I remember that joint! It wasn't a terribly big room, IIRC. Cambridge, MA had some funky places...

I've never heard of Three Colors, but Treat Her Right had a minor hit in the Boston area—"I Think She Likes Me." Funny song and great video. According to YouTube comments, the video was shot in The Plough and Stars in Cambridge—and yes the place still exists and still looks pretty dive-y.

Mark Sandman's voice and lyrics almost always matched perfectly. RIP.

One of the things I really love about RP is these atmospheric gold nuggets you sometimes trip over in song comments.

Thank you, kcar and fellow RPeeps, for contributing to my edification... :)

You may or may not like the sound, but Morphine has (had) an unusual instrumental lineup, especially for a three-piece band:  Bass, sax, and drums.  And the bass was 1- or 2-stringed (vs. 4).  Toss in Mark Sandman's moody vocals, and you've got a distinctive sound all right.  I groove to it for a bunch of reasons, including I was a fan of their predecessor bands Treat Her Right and Three Colors.  Saw them both back in the day at TT The Bear's Place for folks who remember.  Dana Colley's sax work is unmistakable.

A rare 10 for me. Butt shakin, menacing, full of hooks, original, crazy cool sax. Totally get why few others give this such a high rating, a bit surprised I do, but, I guess it was just finally time to introduce me to the good, good, good.

I know only a fraction of Morphine's work by name but I can seemingly identify them after about a second on RP. Not sure that's a good thing. (And it's not just the horns).

Great song; sax as lead instrument doesn't in any way diminish the quality.
Buena, pero no una de sus mejores. {#Sunny}

Say what?
Love these guys, so cool.
Great tune!
Oh dear, great memories of a live concert in the Milkyway Amsterdam probably >15 years ago, literally blown away by the saxophone player blowing a tenor and alt sax simultaneously! Brilliant!
Love this band.  What an incredibly unique sound. Who would've thought that a bass, baritone sax and drums would sound so cool together.  Guess these guys did.  Love their creativity and raw rock sound.
Great stuff, never heard them before, thanks. RP reminds me of the golden days of rock radio in the '70's, when you would hear a blues song, followed by Yes, followed by Black Sabbath, followed by Joni Mitchell, followed by Sly, etc. People today have been mollified into being unchallenged by different music, thanks for not being another Clear Channel.
I saw these guys actually playing in a shopping mall in Minnesota. People were just walking by. I was stunned by the band and the fact that people were just walking by. I don't understand people who don't like this. Kinda don't want to.
Sorry, Thais Not the Kind of outstandig Music, you ususally Play. Its a Must Not!
Morphine. I guess you need to be in pain to appreciate it.
Brilliant music.

Well, I'm glad Bill likes Morphine and plays 'em. I only saw them once at the Warfield in SF. A few months later I got my first tat at Triangle in Ft Bragg. A pretty simple monochrome adaptation of an old sumi skeleton  figure. Mr G was working on more complex stuff so I got the young apprentice recently up from the City. As we began he asked me if I minded if he played some music. I said: "what you got?" He replied a band called  Morphine. I said, wow, just saw them a couple months ago etc. We got along just fine and he did some really nice gradations that represent the brush strokes in the original art. Nice job.

The bonus is that when folks ask me if it hurt to get a tat I can say: nope, not a bit. I had Morphine!

"I hear a voice from the back of the road ..."  Thank goodness!!!! I thought that voice was only in MY head!

Buena, Buena, right back atchya!
Unique music.  One can tell a Morphine song from the first notes
"Homicide: Life on the Street" used this song to great effect.

Really have to disagree with those who say that all Morphine songs sound the same.
The songs were good but kind of beside the point - it was just the sound that mattered. I remember Dana Colley playing two baritone saxophones simultaneously for a show-ending version of "Honey White" at the 40 Watt in Athens a thousand lifetimes ago. Awesome.

Sandman provides the remedy.
..heh!, this following Chris Isaak "I Wonder".."Buena" is a cure for that pain, yep-yep..
Where's the Baritone Saxophone intro? It gets ya even deeper into the silky bass and vocal mood of Morphine.
Too short...

  1. this song
  2. Mark Sandman's life/career
  3. Morphine's catalog

I love good Sax!

Shit.  I think I blew out my crappy work computer speakers on this song.  (One of the benefits of working an IT service desk at night is the ability to rock out with no one around to complain).  Good thing I can just go get more speakers...

One of these days I'm going to bring some speakers from home in and use them.  Twice the size and 4 times the power... Oh yes, there will be jammage...
such a shame that the singer is no longer with us.
solid 8, always!
Thank you, Bill for introducing me to this marvelous band.  Gravelly voice matches gravelly sax, layered over quiet boogie beat ...
Buena es bueno

I have the opposite problem - every time Bill plays one of their songs, I get TOO into it, and nothing else gets done because I'm too busy playing air-sax and dancing.  I just love this band.

Different kind of music but Morphine should have been as big as say, White Stripes.  Was into them right from "Cure for Pain" and thought they might hit it pretty big.  Saw a live show in SF, circa 1998, it was great & funny at the same time.  RIP Mark Sandman...
