Unsealed, on a porch a letter sat
Then you said, "I wanna leave it again."
Once I saw her on a beach of weathered sand
And on the sand
I wanna leave it again... yeah
On a weekend... wanna wish it all away, yeah
And they called, and I said that "I want what I said" and then I call out again
And the reason, oughtta leave her calm, I know
I said, "I know what I wear, not the box or the bag."

(''Alternate opening verse:''
''I want to see that...
On a voice that let out said
"Let me see him."
I want to leave it {him} again
Once I saw him on a beach of weathered sand
I don't want to see him
I want to leave it {him} again
I want to leave here, I want to get wasted on the way, yeah
And he called and I said and I know what I said and I called out again
And the reason, I'm gonna' leave her {him} gone, but I know
What I said, "I don't know whether to leave it in the box there or n'the bag.")''

"Ah yeah... Can you see them out on the porch?
Yeah, but they don't wave
But I see them... 'round different ways, yeah
And I know, and I know... I don't want to stay

Ah yeah, yeah
Can you see them
Out on the porch?
Yeah, but they don't wave
I see them... 'round the front way, yeah
And I know, and I know
I don't want to stay

(Make me cry)

Ooooh I see
Ooh, I dont know there's something else
I want to drum it all away
Oh, I said, "I--I don't, I don't know whether I was the box or the bag."

Ah yeah
Can you see them
Out on the porch?
Yeah, but they don't wave
But, I see them round the front way, yeah
And I know, and I know...{that I don't...}
I don't want to stay, alone {at all}
I don't wanna stay, yeah
I don't wanna stay
I don't wanna stay
I don't
Don't wanna
Ohhhh
Yeah... oooh no no no no no
Ohhhhhhh oh oh oh oh

Deep down, don't we all want to leave Bennigans? 🤣

To be clear, I absolutely, positively hate this song, but with the COMPLETE and CORRECT lyrics found in the comments below, it went from horrible to hilarious.
These lyrics are like the Cockatoo videos where they subtitle their birds!

It's a very basic, standard tune, and he's out of it. Awful.
Why is he singing a song about choices in men's underwear?   Eddie is so much fun with Yellow Ledbetter that we should send him a copy of the OED. Just to clean up his language.
Found one here for Even Flow www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLt5ZRdXgvg
Amazing how Vedder made a career of belching out incomprehensible guttural sounds.
Everytime this song comes on RP, I immediately stop what I'm doing, go to the RP tab, and find this comment so I can read along and laugh my butt off

There is always a seat at my table for Eddie Vedder. And when he shows up, Be sure i'm to ask him about the lyrics in this song. Or maybe we'll just drink a toast around my campfire. just saying. Or maybe we don't wanna say?
If a rotten egg could sing, this would be the song.

Your take seems a bit excessive (as is this song), but I agree that with the exception of the Hendrix-like guitar, it grates excessively. Excessive seems to be the theme.

Perhaps, then, you haven't heard enough modern, rock or pop music.  This is a veritable masterpiece compared to other offerings. fwiw, besides Eddie swallowing or gagging the lyrics, I like it.  Good guitar break, too.  But, you'll always have Bennie and the Jets.

That is utterly HILARIOUS!
Make me fries.
This song was recorded in a one off. No pre-written lyrics, minimal rehearsing. Just the band jamming around the guitar of Mike McCready. It was then used as a B-side for the single Jeremy.

There are no official lyrics and during live performances, Ed will sing different lyrics depending on life experiences and current events

The song became a fan-favorite during the late 90's during live shows because of the solos and tags used at the end of the song -showcasing the virtuoso skills of Mike McCready.

Mike McCready on YLB- That was written around the time of the first record [Ten]. I think that was the second thing Ed and I wrote together. It came out of a jam in the studio and Ed didn't really have any lyrics. He came up with some ideas right there on the spot, and that's what we recorded. For some reason, it didn't make it on Ten. I was kind of bummed at the time. I really wanted it to be on our first record. But at the time, I was really young and just happy to be around this situation, so I did whatever.

A favorite of the "mis-heard lyrics" people like me. LOL. Great song and you can have a lot of fun with it too.

I suspect including words that actually made sense was more of a suggestion than a requirement for this song.  And I love it anyway.  The RP song comments make me love it even more.  I think I'll ask that this be sung at my funeral, "brown the runway" and all.

Such a good track
Now you got the feeling how we non-native speakers feel with almost half of the songs sung in English (both Brit an Yank versions). But we manage somehow. Great song anyway.

This is phuckn hilarious.

First Bill plays The Derek Trucks Band — This Sky which has the guitar lick that sounds so much like the old McDonald's jingle, then he plays this song which has Vedder saying something that sounds very similar to "Make me fries."

Maybe I just need to stop for lunch!
I haven't always dug their vocals or dark vibe, but I have always dug how this one sounds so much like Jimi Hendrixs' guitar-work...

Amen. Loathe this song.  PSD here I come!

Javel, if that's not a snide comment — do you understand the rating system?

I never paid attention to the lyrics, because the music on its own is enjoyable enough. Now that Bill drew my attention to the lyrics by referring to one of the comments, I have shortly tried to make sense of the random syllables coming out of Eddie's mouth. I think I'll just go back to simply enjoying the instrumental side of this song and consider Eddie just another instrument that happens to resemble human speech.

I can't tell if this was a conversation between two people who speak the same language, or if it's the lyrics spelled out phoentically.

Either way, this might be in my top 2 favorite Pearl Jam songs.  And it only gets a 6 rating out of me.  And that's because of the SRV influence (heck, the song even sounds like SRV's cover of Little Wing almost) -

It's Dutch.  Which sounds an awful like how Bill the Cat speaks.

Make me fries!
Gif of psychedelic mushroom with words "Keep Calm You Are Tripping"

Really: why else are you still listening to this slobber-drunk wailing?
Office mate went to karaoke night, choose this, and just made up the lyrics as he went. Apparently it was hysterically funny.

I adore this track, so I guess you don't need to be American to understand the special ingredient.

Enunciate, man.

It's a secret code; if you play this backwards you can hear Eddie hinting at the location of The Spear of Destiny.  This tune sounds good to me, even if I can't figure out what the hell he was babbling about - nice production.
I've always dreamed of Weird Al giving this song a good trashing. {#Roflol}
Stevie Ray Vaughan is the Yellow (skin color) Ledbetter
This is a song where the music says is all because I don't have a clue what Eddie is saying.

aka Leadbelly

I kind of wish that intro just continued to make up the whole song.

I keep hearing Stevie Ray Vaughan in the intro. Then I hear Eddie and it's PSD....

what this is so beautiful
Eddie Vedder: patron saint of vowel-only singing since time immemorial. {#Roflol}
for me, the solo spoils it as much as the intro/outro makes it.
Despite the little tooo obvious Jimi Hendrix-copped intro to this song (wherein it veers from homage to straight up imitation), it becomes an excellent song.
