He's a serious mister
Shake his hand and he'll twist your arm.
With Monopoly money
We'll be buying the funny farm.

So I'll do flips, and get paid in chips
From a diamond as big as the Ritz--
Then I'm calling it quits.
(Calling it quits)

Eyes the color of candy,
Lies to cover the handicap.
Though your slippers are ruby,
You'll be led to the booby trap.

And there's no prize,
Just a smaller size,
So I'm wearing the shoe 'til it fits,
Then I'm calling it quits.
Yes, I'm calling it quits.
Yes, I'm calling it quits.

Now he's numbering himself among the masterminds
(Calling it quits)
'Cause he's hit upon the leverage of valentines.
(Calling it quits)
Lifting dialogue from Judy Garland storylines
...Where get-tough girls turn into gold mines.

All those Polaroid babies,
Taking chances with rabies,
Happy to tear me to bits--
Well, I'm calling it quits.
Yes I'm calling it quits.
Yes I'm calling it quits.
Yes I'm calling it quits.
Yes I'm calling it...

Love this song.  Great build up to the chorus, clever lyrics, and Aimee.
Very good set!

I agree to disagree. This doesn't suck at all!
Great album, not a bad song on it.
what a great voice she has, very nice.. {#Angel}

Aimee at her genius apex. Song is cinematic. McCartneyesque.
Early solo Aimee....love it!!  {#Daisy}
(By the way, her second solo album, which is titled {#Iamwithstupid} is absolutely fantastic!!)
I have not heard this before. Nice.  Nice job on the new cover art enlargement Bill!
Nice!
Insanely great album... She did this song on Letterman and made a big blip on my musical radar ever since.

well, the eustachian tubes of the ears do have a direct link to the nasal passages...so, yeah, i guess her "stuck in the nose" voice can be sexy if your ears are blocked

My favorite Aimee Mann song post 'til Tuesday.  Sublime.
Aimee Mann has the sexiest voice in modern day music.
one of her best.
We must be doing different drugs!

Perhaps Aimee should do what the song title says. Very boring tune.

This has just enough atmosphere and energy to keep me liking her. Usually she just plods along...I like this whole album!
LOVE YOU, AIMEE!

Aimee Mann - Calling it Quits, Live

"calling it quits", directed by robert cohen, from aimee's album "Bachelor No. 2 or, the Last Remains of the Dodo", 1999

That about sums it up for me, too.  Ms. Mann writes some interesting stuff, but I cannot go long with that nasal twang.  But whadda I know?  I'm a big Neil Young fan, so go figger.

Yes, some great songs on this one. Exclamation Mark. {#Wink}
One of my favorite Aimee Mann songs. If it were up to me, this one would get played more often.

And then you do what?  Actually listen... their voices are so different.

A little out of touch with Aimee, eh? :-)

That's the beauty of RP, you'll be listening to this along with some folks who are her biggest fans.

Nice song...great voice

I agree with you completely, she is a singer with smooth and luxurios voice.

By the time I selected an 8 rating, the song shifted slightly into a more produced, slick song with over-smooth "whoo whoo" vocals in the background. I bumped it down to 6. It's Aimee, I couldn't take it lower than that.

Wonderful!!!!!!!!
Aimee's just one of those love her or hate her artists. I'm in the former camp.
I couldn't do a steady diet of Aimee but her music was a very nice match in the context of "Magnolia." Fairly poignant for me actually...but I don't load my Shuffle full of her stuff to hit the slopes with!

Then there's Sarah McLachlan.
Ugh.
I'm the only person I know who can't stand listening to her. One of my friends said she could listen to her sing the phone book. I think I'd prefer that over listening to her sing her songs, but not at all is better.
LMAO Ditto that.
I like some Aimee Mann, but to me this just sounds like boilerplate faux Anne Murray or something. Over-produced and fake sounding. Poor use of her neat voice.

Like your honesty - if you like someone 'uncool' and you're not afraid to say it, (and vice versa), well done. Personally I find Aimee is an excellent writer, but just an OK singer. I think Lucinda Williams is a great singer but I can imagine many people not liking her at all. Horses for courses ...
Well, I should clarify that while I think Barry Manilow is really good, I don't listen to him, because I don't like the style of music so much. But I used it as an example of being really good at something I'm just not interested in. I agree with you about Lucinda Williams. I think she's great. At the same time, I really only enjoy one or two songs at a time.

I don't like listening to Aimee Mann sing. I understand that most people do. For me, it's just a taste thing. I can't argue with the fact that she's good; I just don't like it. I recently heard Barry Manilow for the first time since I was a child. As the quintessential singer that everyone things sucks, I was surprised by how very good he is. I think it's what he's doing that people object to rather than his performance. Then there's Sarah McLachlan. I'm the only person I know who can't stand listening to her. That same friend doesn't understand how I can listen to anything at all as long as Alison Krauss is singing it.

Too much Aimee on RP; she's just not that good and there are lots of other singer/songwriters that could use the exposure.
I know the tyranny of the masses can be upsetting, but clearly there are a lot of folks here on RP who disagree with you. Her songs are consistently rated fairly highly by this group of fairly picky folks. A gentle suggestion to do what I do when I come across s a song I don't like. Mute for a few minutes and then come back to see what other gem Bill has picked out for us to listen to.
she knows her Beatles, doesn't she?
A good song for Friday... Better than last week's Tori Amos' number!
Between her and her husband, Michael Penn, the talent pours forth. Please produce progeny.

Clearly, something about her voice bothers you. Sorry for that. I've seen her live twice and she's simply sublime. Smoother than smooth. Excellent tune.

I'm not really an Aimee Mann fan, but I dig this song.

You had to hide on the closet for that? I could understand Jethro Tull, but not Aimee Mann
Now why does you gots to be hatin' on Jethro Tull? Well, I'm not gonna let that put a damper on our Annual Summertime All Analogue/Vinyl/Record Outdoor Party unofficially sponsored by Heineken and Bang & Olufsen this year, featuring Jethro Tull! Dagnabbit! Gotta luv the Tull. :)
she never sings about anything cheerful, does she.
That voice...yum..Umm... :sunny.gif:
How about more new stuff from Aimee's newest album?
Although I prefer her work from the Til Tuesday days, I can never get enough of Aimee and her incredible voice...... :nodhead: :sunny.gif:
Aimee never turns out bad music.
I'd never thought too much of Aimee Mann before...apparently I was quite wrong to judge from this song at least. Nice.
Very interesting arrangement and a wonderful voice to boot!
