Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath
Keep me in your heart for a while
If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less
Keep me in your heart for a while

When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun
Keep me in your heart for a while
There's a train leaving nightly called, ''"When all is said and done"''
Keep me in your heart for a while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo
Keep me in your heat for a while
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while

Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house
Maybe you'll think of me and smile
You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse
Keep me in your heart for a while

Hold me in your thoughts, take me to your dreams
Touch me as I fall into view
And when the winter comes, keep the fires lit
And I will be right next you

Engine drivers headed north to Pleasant Street
Keep me in your heart for a while
These wheels keep turning but they're running out of steam
Keep me in your heart for a while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while

Keep me in your heart for a while

Dang, it's more than 20 years since Warren Zevon enjoyed his last sandwich.

He is still missed.
I always prefer Desperados Under The Eaves as a Warrenism, but having followed him from his beginning to the end, this song simply capped off his career for its raw emotion of him being in his final days on this earth.

Warren's not everyone's cup of tea, but have some respect.
Wow, gets me every time! RIP Mr Zevon!
Reading the comments it is pretty clear that some folks really do not realize the timing of that song. He was an unusual fellow who wrote some unusual songs, but every time I head this one, I think about what it takes to create something heartfelt when you know you are dying soon.

This would have to be the most inane piece of contrived sentimentality I have ever heard, and the performance is embarrassing. Definitely a contender for the worst song ever. OUCH!

Funny, I was thinking the same exact thing about your comment.
Godspeed, Mr. Zevon. You are dearly missed.

Please look at the story behind this, or read the comments further down.  Thanks.

I love this, it reminds me of my husband who's been dead over 15 years now. I will always keep him in my heart for more than awhile.
One of the best father to daughter songs ever. Thank you Warren for all the beauty and joy.
RIP Warren, you wrote some truly amazing songs.   Enjoy that sandwich

An amazing man, who kept dignity, honor, and art alive to the very end. If only we could all die so well. KAC

Warren Zevon died of lung cancer about a month ago. Your comment was thoughtless and asinine; moreover, you obviously don't know a legend when you hear one. Go back to your Britney Spears.

this is a nice little song. it makes me smile. it makes me feel feelings of acceptance, and peace with the passing of someone who was loved - this song, like many others, makes me think of my friend brandon who died earlier this year of his own hands. keeping him in my heart forever.
My favourite of Warren's is still Werewovles of London, but this is really a pleasant surprise.
"Enjoy every sandwich"...words to live by

Do you have some personal vedetta against the guy? The only posts I've ever seen from you here are these anti-Zevon diatribes. I guess I don't quite get the degree of negativity you display.
You know what? You're right. I am being too hard on the guy. Whenever i write one of these rants I've forgotten everything else that Zevon has ever done... just call it anger that "The Wind" might be last thing Zevon is remembered for.

The singing is terrible, the writing is passable, and the instrumentals are forgetable. The fact that zevon is worm food is the only thing that makes this song/album special in any way. Now, i can understand what zevon was trying to get when he decided to make this album, a voice changed by the certainty of death, thing is, he failed, and the album doesn't sound anything other than "rushed."
In many ways I tend to agree that this may not be great music, but your tone lacks the respect due everyone who listens to RP and reads these boards. Zevon, Cash, etc. all got bumps in the ratings when they passed on. It's an acknowledgement to their contribution to others, even if you're not one of them. A lot of people pass away every day, and only a few get their picture in every newspaper in a city, fewer for a region, and a select few for an entire nation. Zevons was in papers around the world. It must have had something.
Trying not to cry at work........ What a shame and a loss.
Yet another excellent find and additon to my cd collection, thanks to RP! I'm only sad that I first got introduced to Mr. Zevon a few days before his untimely demise. :( Cheers Peter

Okay- this is a beautiful song and it is very poignant considering Mr. Zevon's recent demise. But it is being way over-played here recently. Please don't dystroy the beauty of rarity. (To paraphase Robinson Jeffers.)
How long will it be before this song fails to bring tears to my eyes? Bye Warren, Godspeed. The world was better because of you. DWTW: Samiyam
Even apart from mr. Zevon's situation, at the time he sang this, a moving song. Dylanesque.
This hits home. I would consider it a very beautiful song.
Poignant and stirring beyond words. I won't even try. Just listen and feel.
He's in my heart. I wrote on my whiteboard: "Enjoy every sandwich." I won't forget it, or him.
Just finished a WZ compilation that ends with: Knockin' On Heaven's Door Keep Me In Your Heart Mutineer (Last live appearance, Letterman show Oct/02) Tears me up.
This might very well become a common song played at funerals in the future.
Moving and heartwrenching -- --Shari
Good, well written song. No disrespect intended, though, when I say that I can't stand Warren's voice.
Very poignant. And with children who lost family members reading (at Ground Zero) the names of those lost on 9-11-01 at this very moment, an added poignancy.
I'm sure that many of us will keep Warren in our hearts for awhile.
