Reminds me of my late friend who could play like this. I miss you buddy.
I just mistook Michael Hedges for Leo Kottke. Worries me seriously!
blessed to have seen him twice

Agreed. About a decade before Mr. Hedges' accident my father and cousin were having conversation about fame while driving the same road. My dad, a painter, said he had no desire to be famous since "most famous painters are dead." Only a few moments later my cousin misjudged a curve and put the passenger side tires off the edge of the pavement and nearly over the side. Regaining control of the car and his composure, my cousin turned to my (shaken) dad and said, "Almost made you famous..."

This amazing man did have cancer. However, that is not how he died.he was driving home from Sanfrancisco Airport after a Thanksgiving visit to his girlfriend in Long Island, New York. Brilliant musician. Tragic to lose him so early.

I am not a musician and this is my first listening of Hedges. I would enjoy listening to someone who knew a lot about their subject matter explain to me why something was significant.  That's cool to hear Michael inspired that kind of reaction and analysis of technique from one musician to another.

11 small roaches = happy college kid?
Amazingly talented.

<edit, three years later>  Eleven small roaches?  Last night must've been an impressive party, am I right?!?!
Never heard this one, but I stopped work and said out loud "Michael Hedges. Wow."

I have a cassette of Michael Hedges and Leo Kottke performing solo and together on the public radio station in Minneapolis in 1981 or 1982.

I imagine I can tell their work apart within about 10 bars.  And I'm no musician.

Sadly, I can no longer decide which of them I like more.
I wonder if he is Trace Bundy's muse?

Wow... A Grammy.

Some say the accident was no accident. He had painful-difficult issues in life, and maybe just didn't want to continue.

Show some restraint; stop half-way and have a little think...

That was a tragedy, sure, but it's not a reason to buy albums, because big music industry corporations is that they are searching forever, the dead of a good artist to make money with royalties and revenues.

Stuff them all in a bowl.  Should be easier to hit them then.

just recently was made aware of this guitman, I'm curious, what happened to him, I'm guessing because of his hair, or lack thereof, that he may have had cancer of sime kind..?

I actually bought this album as a christmas gift this year

Not sure if he had been ill but he died in 1997 after his BMW slid off a rain-slick coastal CA road over a 120ft cliff.  He was thrown from his car and died "instantly."  A tragic end for Mr. Hedges and a sad loss to the music community.

Here's the story:

Absolutely, I saw him play in a small Belfast pub (The John Hewitt) about 2 years ago, a really enjoyable performance and a fantastic way to spend a late afternoon on a winter Sunday. I believe he was a friend of Michael Hedges.

Yep. The New Varsity - in Palo Alto - They'd "pass the can" and I'd always oblige. He was always, always a treat.

I did! Hedges has become an instant fave. His strumming is heavenly. He is labeled as "New Age", but his chords are too vibrant for such. Buy this disc NOW!!!! You definately will not be sorry!
One of the most talented guitar players ever. I saw Michael Hedges play many times in NY. He had a magnetic presence and was a tremendous performer. His life was all too short.
Have never seen this album before. It sounds like there is an audience in the background. Might have to support RP and buy this on from Amazon. :D
Don't forget to hide the roaches. Very nice.
