I must disagree with my esteemed colleague. Brilliant song. Nice choice of version, too. Really captures that Thatcher-era English depression.
And that's a good thing? Madchester depression can be a good thing, but this is supposed to wry and ends up lethargic instead. Why aren't we playing more Joy Division?
Brilliant response...This entertains for real.WonderLizard wrote:
Prefer the Fred Astaire/Syd Charisse version from "Bandwagon".

Sounds rather like something Jack Black would do and how he would do it.
If Jack Black did it, it really would be entertainment. Which this is not.

Sez it all .... More Jam ... More Paul Weller

Pardon my ignorance, I just heard three different versions in (seemingly) rapid succession. Each version was just as clumsy as the other, so I assumed I had yet to hear the original. Further assumed the original was from some broadway musical.

This is just a boring song and I don't understand why so many people feel the need to cover it.
I'm not that keen either - I don't like the original that much and that beats this all ends up - but I don't see how you can call Weller singing his own song a "cover"...
This is just a boring song and I don't understand why so many people feel the need to cover it.
Kind of lacks the bite of the Jam version . . . sort of a necessary ingredient.
Hoo-ahh! Let's hear more Paul Weller, including his more recent stuff!
An interesting version of the song. One of Weller, Foxton, and Buckler's best. Too bad The Jam never got the attention they deserved here in the U.S.
Well this certainly belies its title

One of the GREAT Jam songs!!!!!! Thanks for playing this version...have not heard it before....I also like Billy Bragg's version.
More Jam, yeah! Down in the Tube Station at Midnight is a personal favorite
Jam would be nice.
