I owned the album nine years before giving it a proper listen, and it knocked my socks off.

The drawling bluesy sound and dark gothic lyrics make me immediately think of the US SE and folk dressed as skeletons and ghosts walking along the main drag of New Orleans behind a brass band. This may well be ignorance on my part as my only knowledge of New Orleans is from news footage of the hurricane destruction and various films, so I wonder if US listeners get the same vibe from this song? I love it, BTW - 8 from the foot-tappin' closet goth Nottingham jury.
Excellent album. Takes me back to Olomouc (Czech Republic), where an Australian ex-pat introduced me to "London Still" from this disc. Hope to see the Poet's Corner Hostel again.

Lucinda Williams/Joan Osborne. Yep, they have that sound, but also some very good musicianship - they're in the pocket (translation: same groove, on the same wavelength, intuiting what will come next musically.)
This is a sort of depressing song, but I love the flavor of it. A good mix of vocals, incredible music, perceptive lyrics, and catchy harmonies.
I like it.

How Ironic! I just turned off my Winamp to listen to The Waifs CD "Shelter Me" and when I went to close down the Browser I see this song is playing! So, I HAVE to restart WinAmp to listen to this. Right on, Radio Paradise! You guys turned me on to the Waifs a couple of years ago, I have been a big fan ever since.
Sidebar - The Waifs opened for Bob Dylan through out his European Tour in the Fall of 2003. I was fortunate enough to see them in St. Louis a year ago May. A fantastic show! Afterwards I had the pleasure of meeting the band afterwards. Such down to earth straight ahead people!
Again, thanks RadioParadise for turning me on to new music, it is always a life enriching experience.

I keep thinking I'm hearing Joan Osborne, and it keeps turning out it's not her. Maybe she's moonlighting under other names; she certainly hasn't been doing much with the Osborne franchise recently.
I LOVE the Waifs, but this song is the weakest on a fantastic album. It's good to see the positive comments below, though, because I'm just happy for any reason that gets people to expore this band. I think the previous album "Sink or Swim" may be even better than Up All Night.
Hey... What a powerful and emotive voice for one so young! And they take thier time with the song, not rushing through it like a three minute orgasm. Can't wait to hear more from these folks.
nice...so few female vocalists that i like. It's good to find another one:-)

It is nice to hear songs that do not have to crowd every moment with vocals.
And she does remind me of Fiona, too...with some maturity behind it.
Great band. Would love to hear a wider variety of their songs on RP.
Also, they're a completely indie act ---- wouldn't sign with Nettwerk because they have it too good doing things themselves.
Saw them open for Dylan last summer. They rocked!!!!
The Waifs are very much worth the attention. Independent band, former buskers, blood harmonies, sweet harmonica, cool acoustic guitar leads, and interesting songwriting. Their accents alone are worth the listen...you should hear Josh's!

A fantastic band - much more than a "Joan soundalike". All 3 band members do some great vocals with their own distinct flavors. Some tunes are bluesy with great harp work; others are acoustic gems; still others will transport you to the Australian outback.
A band well worth exploring in depth! :sunny.gif:

There's a blurry line between folk and country. I'd say this is pretty clearly on the folk side. If you don't like folk you're probably not on the right channel cause there's quite a bit of it here.
