I still have a library card from the Salem Public Library (I lived in Keizer for twenty years, but it never had its own library...) So - how's the weather in PDX? I really miss the PNW - all the local music, the bike-friendly streets, the recycling... Is Dirty Martini doing well? They performed a few years ago at the Elko Hot-Air Balloon Festival, and I wrote an article on them that got published in the local newspaper. They were SO awesome...

My mom painted a picture of Multnomah Falls, based on a photo I snapped of it in 1982. The Gorge is always beautiful and treacherous, and I miss Jonathan's at the Oyster Bar...

And that has nothing to do with the Decemberists, but I love this song.  Marley, go pay your fines and become a happy library person again. They love it when people own up to their debts, and chances are, they'll settle... {#Lol}

I actually like this song (and others by The Decemberists) because they are taking this minimalism approach that's becoming so popular and doing it RIGHT.  It's simple, but not overly boring.  It doesn't include annoyingly repetitious Casio keyboard sounds.  It's not so overly sparse and minimalistic that you wonder if they left out one of the sound tracks.  It's really a well done, light, relaxing piece.

For some reason, this doesn't do it for me.

The vocalist is interesting (I happen to agree with the earlier comment about there are too many clay aiken soundalikes / jewel wannabes), the guitar + drum + organ combination reminds me of late 60's early 70's jams (of which I am fond), but I just can't see myself ever needing to hear this again.  Trying to figure out why.  lyrics are boring, maybe?  production doesn't pull the piece together maybe?  The most interesting part for me was the musical bridge.   Hmm.....

I like other material from this band, and do not have a problem with the singer's voice; it seems like a great many people only want to hear safe, "professional" vocalists anymore, (maybe that's who buys those Clay Aiken CD's).  That being stated, this song is ponderous and tiresome (to me).

Okay the geek strikes again.... The band is the Decemberists. The 1825 Russians were know as the Decembrists. The band intetionally called themselves the Decemberists because they figured if they used the actual spelling that people would ask "Don't you mean Decemberists?" Splitting hairs again... Not their strongest effort, but a likeable tune nonetheless. And I quite like Colin Melloy's voice. It's weird, yes, but not grating to these ears. A better tune is "Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect" which is also dreamy and slow-ish. Love it.
