Great post. Maybe you should check out Deadwing too; that PT album is one of the best-arranged albums I ever heard. Of course there is The Incident song cycle as well; that one is less accessible but absolutely brilliant sonically and conceptually.

I think that you'll find the same generation that adored RUSH when they were starting out is the same generation that now embraces Porcupine Tree. I grew up on RUSH and as an adult find PT equally compelling.

I am your mirror image. EC and TH are among my faves of all time. EC in my top 3. And PT - my wife loves them and I've gone to see them with her - I recognize the talent and innovation - but I've never really been a big fan of a lot of the "progressive" bands that seem to be there influences, and I just don't dig them much.

But RP is a big tent thank goodness.

Porcupine Tree is one of my favorites. I first heard them on Radio Paradise. I bought Stars Die, which I figured was a good place to start, being a selection of their songs from the 90s; In Absentia and Fear of a Dark Planet are on their way.

I like or love almost everything I hear on this station. I have problems with Elvis Costello and Talking Heads, but I understand that a lot of folks like them, so I try not to complain (I guess I just slipped a little here).

Prog is long-form music and you have to be in it for the full ride. Kinda like movies: some people need an explosion or nudity every five minutes to keep their attention. Fine with me, I like those occasionally myself. But to sit through the director's cut of Dr Zhivago or Lawrence of Arabia requires that extra bit of dedication or some little clue will escape you that resolves a plot device or a chord progression later on.

Deadwing, Discussing music is little like discussing tastes in food. It is generally perceived to be extremely poor manners to express an emotional dislike or disgust with food that other people enjoy. Here's a travel tip for folks. If you really want to come across as an uncultured boor (and play to a bunch of negative stereotypes), play fussy with food hospitality in foreign countries.

For the very small percentage of RP listeners that don't like these guys... Hey, we will never all like the same music. Music is a completely personal thing. Speaking for myself if I hear a song I don't like I don't go on that songs thread and talk shite to the people that do enjoy it. I have more respect for other peoples opinions and feelings than that. PT is getting a lot of play here because they are getting a lot of positive feedback and requests. 6 guys pissing and moaning will never outweigh 500 positive responses. Deal.

My favorite band since Signify in 1996

I'm really happy RP is getting their music out to so many more people who would never have heard them otherwise. If you like what you hear try their live concert DVD Arriving Somewhere.... or their 5.1 surround sound album mixes. They won the Surround Sound Record of the Year in 2004 AND 2005 for In Absentia and Deadwing. Better yet they are going to be touring the US again in October- go to one of their shows if you can manage it. They are amazing live.

It kind of boggles the mind just why such awsome talent goes unrecognized. If it weren't for this radio station who would know what is really out there.

You could be right Nabla. A 'social contract' of sorts. Bill plays lots of Porcupine Tree, and many of us rave on, click through, buy RP stuff, send in cheques, etc. It probably doesn't hurt that those of us who rave on like teeny bopper lunatics also might know something about music, play or have played instruments, understand creative process, etc.

I had the same questions when I first got into PT. I like "In Absentia" and "Stupid Dream" a lot. "Deadwing is also good, but "harder" than previous albums. I also really like the spacey, Pink Floyd-ish sounds on this album. I guess it depends on what part of PT you like as to which albums would be YOUR favorites. Steven Wilson is amazing. The lead track on this album is very cool as well. Love that main guitar riff. Awesome stuff.
