There's something strange going on tonight
There's something going on that's not quite right
Michael's nervous and the lights are bright
There's something going on that's not quite right

There's something going on that wasn't here before
Keep your eyes glued to the floor
There's something strange going on tonight
There's something going on that's not quite right, uh huh

There's something going on that wasn't here before
Keep your eyes glued to the floor
No one's going to say goodnight

It's like no artist is permitted to grow if their fans dont want anything but what the artist has been doing.

All bands are permitted to grow and or change but that doesn't mean I  or anyone has to like the new direction.

Have you noticed the R.E.M. snobs who say anything recorded after 1990 is crap and only the early L.P.s are good? You get people like that with every band and it is usually bullshit. The only exception may be Fleetwood Mac after Peter Green but even that is absurd. They aren't bad, just different.

Most overplayed band on RP. Thanks again for the PSD button.
This is a cover.
The original is from the Pink Flag album by Wire.

"The Stubbornly Disappointed" could be a good band name.

The Stubbornly Disappointed opened for the Tragically Hip back in '07.

Absolutely is.  I do it all the time...

Never noticed the cover image's similarity to Pretzel Logic

One of their very last truly legendary albums.

On a roll tonight
Dreadful. Absolutely dreadful and amateurish...especially the singing.

Careful with this one. Sounds like Mikey Stipe may have had some fun. Once.

So you've never heard their cover of King of the Road, then.
OK, fine, but why this and not the original?

I must regretfully accept Bill's idiosyncrasies, since 99% of the time he's a genius.

Failed attempt at Aerosmith?

But this was still 4 years before they wrote Shiny Happy People...

Possibly the best cover of a Wire song ever? Though originally a slow dirge, it suits R.E.M.'s faster janglepop style very well, with even Colin Newman's sneer translating well into Michael Stipe's whine. An odd yet inspired choice.

Listened to this song hundreds of times and never knew it's actually a cover! Thank you (11 years later) for the information!

{#Cool}

REM were so very very good before they became Mega! After that they were only good.

I like the description "janglepop" it seems very apt {#Smile}
Today is R.E.M. day.  That's fine with me.
