Don't often open up this floor
Since I handed in, my gun
What all these keys are for
Now my tour of duty's done
You got to know the switches
Now you got your turn
Watch and learn, junior
Watch and learn

Now you will get your trouble spots
Here's one from down voodoo way
Bragged he had me by the you know what's
Very funny, you don't say
The big Enchilada, stealin' elections
Had to go down there, trash collection
Got his cojones on my desk in there
Made into a souvenir
Set of cufflinks, nice pair
The rest of him's, someplace up here
Sometimes you got to put a shoulder to the door

Not so fast, junior
Listen to your pa
Here, son
I'm handin' over to you
Don't crash the ambulance
Whatever you do

What we have here's a dung hole place
Thought it was fly shit on the map
Fat bastard, ugly face, ooh and the personal crap
You can't move the barriers, you can't mess with oil and gas
Had to go down there, stick a couple aircraft carriers in his ass
Fancy dress, medals chest, it's all in here, for all the gigs
Gas mask bulletproof vest, all the usual rigs
There'll be things they missed, they didn't mention
You've even got a whistle in there for attracting attention

Well, I think you're gonna be okay, son
If I had the tour, I guess
These two buttons by the way
This one I hope you never press
Some holy fool, just watch, not like you or me
That one's the whole shootin' match
Right there, it's the whole shitaree
We don't forget who put us here, Jack
That's page one we talk soft
Carry a big stick, pack the biggest gun
We don't like accidents major or minor
You don't want yourself an incident
Don't ever invade China

Here, son
I'm handin' over to you
Don't crash the ambulance
Ohh, here son
I'm handin' over to you
Don't crash the ambulance
Whatever you do

+1 to 8 for the super chill vibe on this one today...LLRP!!
would like to know what I"m listening to. Nice, sure not MN.
Could be an 8 by replacing accordeon and organ to regular electric guitar

The same French scientists who find Jerry Lewis the highest form of comedic genius. . .

Sorry to inform you, but French scientists have recently proven that the barfability factor of mister Knopfler is even higher than previously believed (9.967 to be precise) . Face it, the guy just sucks. Cheers

14 years later, still true.  But this time we're on our way down, not up.
Very funny lyrics!

Yep. This is the first time I've heard this, and I'd not known about the album. Nice one, Mark - lyrics spot on as usual. 8 from the Nottingham jury.
knopfler can do no wrong in my book.  great tune.
Smouldering, kick butt DUDE!!!

What the heck is he trying to do?
Not his best, but pretty good.
Great great! Oscar
I am really glad that Mark Knopfler went past Dire Straits...not that they were bad, but I really like his solo stuff too, and KUDOS for RP for playing this....this you would never hear on the radio that other white meat lolol
It's all about: American Foreign policy through the last six or seven decades. French Foreign Policy through the last several hundred years. British Foreign policy since time began. It's a grand tradition. Bruce Cockburn said it best: "North South East West Kill the best and buy the rest It's just spend a buck to make a buck You don't really give a flying fuck About the people in misery"
I knew it was Knopfler right after the first three guitar notes.

If this song is from GHWB to GWB, I like this presentation vs. uninformed whining. Hey, politics are a dirty business, and this father-son thing we've got going lends to a very interesting story, no matter whether you're on the right side of the fence or not. ;)

I think that's exactly what this song is about. The Dixie Chicks could learn a lesson from Mark Knopfler - he doesn't have to use the stage as a pulpit to make statements from, he uses his music to do it for him... which is so much more clever and admirable. The single from this album "Boom Like That" is all about how McDonalds came into existance. Brilliant Storyteller
Very cool, brilliant!

you think this is main stream pop?
Yup, I think that. There is nothing new or inspiring about this kind of music, and that makes it tiring to listen to. It's all been done before much better, by others and by mister K. himself.

I think the average of 6.6 is just about right. This is a pleasant song, but nothing amazing from an amazing artist.
Ditto - he's capable of more - I think he's going for a restrained delivery here, but it doesn't suit him. I have to upload some songs from an album done with Chet Atkins - now THAT'S some down-home, good-ole-boy fun!!! YEEE-HAA! - Riff

music sounds pretty different than dire straits music to me

You should check out the lyrics on this one. Pretty political. I think Knopfler was focused on them rather than on making the music particularly different sounding.
I agree that RP plays a lot of MK, and that his songs tend to sound the same. But something about this song made me sit up and take notice. I love the words, the melody, the instrumentation. Hearing it here actually caused me to buy this album, my first ever MK purchase. Who knew?
Playing all Mark Knopfler all the time isn't really "eclectic". Especially when the artist has basically one sound in every song.

Mark is much like other aging artists - most of their work starts to sound much like all of their other work. This is great if the artist is great, and Mark is undoubtedly an excellent musician and song writer.
actually, he's ALWAYS been kind of a one-trick-pony, but what a KEWL trick it is! actually, i'm wrong. his soundtrack to "the princess bride" certainly showed another side. but as far as dire straits and his solo rock stuff goes, he mostly sounds great but mostly the same! i think "consistent" is the loaded compliment to use here...
Hmm, you've piqued my interest Bill.
I like it.

Great album, I'd say better than Ragpicker's Dream and on par with Sailing to Philadelphia. One thing I like about MK's CDs is that they're always nice and long. "Postcards from Paraguay" is a standout on this disc.
That first note made me think it would be Chris Isaac's Wicked Game.
