Cannot find the comfort in this world
Artificial tear...vessel stabbed...next up, volunteers
Vulnerable, wisdom can't adhere...
A truant finds home...and a wish to hold on...
But there's a trapdoor in the sun...
Immortality...
As privileged as a whore...victims in demand for public show
Swept out through the cracks beneath the door
Holier than thou, how?
Surrendered...executed anyhow
Scrawl dissolved, cigar box on the floor...
A truant finds home...and a wish to hold on too...
He saw the trapdoor in the sun...
I cannot stop the thought...I'm running in the dark...
Coming up a which way sign...all good truants must decide...
Oh, stripped and sold, mom...auctioned forearm...
And whiskers in the sink...
Truants move on...cannot stay long
Some die just to live...
Ohh...
Why do concert crowds always feel the need to scream during the quiet parts of guitar solos? Or really any quiet moment in the song? Pay attention, shut up and let them make their music. Scream your silly head off at the end.
Couldn’t agree more!
I’m not into shelling out good money on a live album only to hear half wits screaming their fucking lungs out😒
Hey!!! As someone who has been that stagehand I love it. It's the only applause we ever get...We were there hours before you, and we will be there hours after you leave...
KUDOS to stagehands!!! They make music happen!!! They build the the stage, assist the sound and light companies (doing MOST of the assembly work) & last but not least, assist the riggers, suspending the speakers and lighting system from the ceiling!!!
I LAUGH MY ASS OFF when the crowd gives a standing ovation for a stage hand bringing out a new monitor speaker!!!

Right?! I was at a Paul Simon concert at Wa Mu Theater in Seattle, soaking in the 'The Sound of Silence' when some Yahoo just had to yahoo for all of us to hear. It's The Sound of f***ing Silence for God's sake!!
I agree. I try to avoid live recordings, usually sub-par overspeed performances marred by screaming. But to me what's worse is the pandering to the crowds by bored singers. Given all that there are some bands that are only at their best live. But there is no reason with direction mics for the crowd to be this upfront.
That is because they added a special "crowd mic" to the recording! It works for some bands and not others. Emerson, Lake & Palmer's Pictures at an Exhibition had a good crowd mic!

Zenhead, it is obvious the drugs are having an effect on some in the crowd!

I see where you're coming from, especially from a listener of a live recording point of view. But as an amateur rock musician, stirring people enough to cheer me on while I play is pretty cool. Granted, for other, quieter genres like classical, maybe not so much. But Pearl Jam definitely qualifies as rock, and I'd hazard a guess that McReady probably dug it.
Your problem may be more with the mixing of this live album. Ever been to an early 1990's Pearl Jam (or similar) concert? The entire thing is loud.
The "quiet parts" are just the parts where, if you scream as loud as you can, the stranger that you are crammed nuts-to-butts against just might hear you.
It can be annoying sometimes but on other occasions, like this gig, it works wonderfully well. At least that's my opinion.
To my knowledge this is from the Benoroya Hall live album, not from Rearview Mirror. And opposite to what some people say here there's no ukulele in it. The part that drives the audience wild is an acoustic guitar solo.
By the way, Black from the same album, is some of the best examples of what an audience during a live performance can add to a (already marvelous) song.
It's becouse they let everybody in.
of course sittin in my shed in Vermont with the wood stove going, a craft beer in hand and, let it be kown, that the brave state of Vermont just past law that up to oneOZ of cannabis possession and you can grow 2 plants.
yup life ain't 2 bad
When can we stop by?
Yes. Would love to have been there to soak that in. Thanks,RP, for playing.
I'm not much of a Pearl Jam fan but I don't understand why people object to Vedder's voice and singing style. I can easily hear melody and emotion. He seem OK to me.
It's funny about vocalists. Dig it: Vedder, Mickey Thomas (Jefferson Starship/Elvin Bishop), Steve Perry (Journey), Bill Champlain (Chicago), Philip Bailey (Earth, Wind, and Fire) were/are all hired guns for bands that had outstanding instrumentalists, but lacked a powerhouse vocalist. My favorite example of this is Big Brother and the Holding Company. They were a hippie-dippie jam band until someone recommended Janis. The rest became history.
It's a good thing that Vedder fit in with Pearl Jam. Who knows how they would have fared otherwise?

Sure they will be in Holland some day soon.
I got to see them twice last week. Awesome as usual. 6 hours of music and 52 different songs over 2 nites.
Very special live band.
My dream too :)

I agree about Vedder's singing, it's okay but Pearl Jam does get boring espicially with the amount played here on RP like just 4 hours ago
Totally agree. Eddie can ruin any song with that voice.
Funny insights and secretly, I agree...nothing too memorable here...

Average musicianship (at best). Songwriting that one might expect from a garage band and a singer whose dreariness is only exceeded by his complete inability to invent a melody.
Hopeless on all accountable levels.

An unmatched devotion over two decades to their fanbase. Epic - in length and energy and quality - live performances.
Three great songwriters. And two good ones. One great writer of heartfelt lyrics that are a touchstone to a generation.
A world class lead guitarist and drummer. A great pedigree of influences.
And a unique front man who set the tone for many an imitator - some of whom were not quite up to the task.
Well said
A big fish eye in recording is on my list.

Sorry but that is just your opinion. You cannot generalize it. The music was always be and always will be about personal taste and matching energy. Nobody can tell you "this is good" or "this is bad". If some song makes you happy than it's good ,and that's it. Just listen your heart ,not the critics, even if they comes from big musicians or other eloquent people.. (sorry for my english)

Yes, let's just have 30 second ditties like a TV commercial because the kiddos now have the attention span of a house fly.
Period music. Just like 10 Years After.
Think I was busy during Pearl Jam's time. I like it. Thanks to RP.
There's a Vedder Canal in British Columbia, small, stunted and unimpressive. Just sayin'.
Eddie's better than that, though.
Now there is a creative put down.
Frankly, the Veddar Canal is rather ugly. Like a big, muddy ditch.

always felt that about bagpipes... and i'm not a pj fan.....but beats crap/rap...( not by much )
Are you kidding? Some of us live for long jams. Let your mind go & your ass will follow.
Plus ca change, plus la meme chose!
I never fail to rib my now 91 year old but still spry Dad about the numerous times he declared to me when I was a teenager in the early 60's: "That ain't music, it's just a lot of racket. They'll be gone in a month and you'll never hear of them again!" He was talking about the Beatles of course.
Heh. After watching Mick Jagger sing "Under My Thumb" on Ed Sullivan's studio stage sometime in the mid '60s, my dad said the same thing.
it's on this album

Love it!
I'll see your disappointment and raise you a moment of muted disagreement...
There is a deep connection I've noticed at PJ shows between this band and their lyrics, with guys of a certain age.
I'm a little older and love this band massively but I agree there is a very spiritual connection going on here.
Wait... what? Iz hooked up with Kim Kardashian? I don't buy it. Iz died on June 26th, 1997 and Kim was born on October 21st 1980. Unless it happened when she was 17 and he was cheating on his wife that he married when Kim was 2...
Or could you mean hooked up as a musical term? It would have been posthumously since her "music" only came out in 2010.
No...dude...I was kidding. Promise. Imagined scenario of Kamakawiwiole as overhyped singer/ukelele rock star...perhaps like Eddie Vedder.
No disrespect to the man. I bought one of Iz's songs as soon as I heard it on RP. May he rest in peace.
Kim can take care of herself, God forbid.
Kamakawiwiole, so overhyped. It's been all downhill since they put him on the cover of Time...and then he had to hook up with Kim Kardashian.

Hey Acceptable is good enough. I'd rather have acceptable than barf in my shoes.
It was a ukele. THAT explains it.

I'm wondering how well Vedder's solo ukulele work is going to be remembered.
I'm very sure the ukulele is fun and all, but Eddie Vedder is no Kamakawiwiole.
It did take a long time for Pearl Jam to really click for me. I always liked them but I was a half generation older than the average fan and I let that bother me. Now I think they are in, say, the top ten of the most influential groups of the rock era.
Pretty funny — my Dad's response to Pearl Jam was "This band is not going to be remembered 20 years from now. Not like the old greats are remembered." (I swear, this is a direct, paraphrased quote).
Looks like he was wrong.
I won't defend all the "new" "darlings", but I bet Death Cab is remembered for a long time, too.

Om Mani Padme Hum...Now that's a spiritual mantra!
It seems a lot of those who hate on Pearl Jam love the new emo darlings like Death Cab, Fleet Foxes, BRMC, etc. I don't think any of those bands can hold a candle to U2 and Pearl Jam. People have been listening to the later for decades and will continue to for decades to come. I doubt that any of the former will be remembered 20 years from now.

There are so many things wrong with your post, I don't know where to begin.
Death Cab and BRMC are not Emo. Decades? Death Cab formed in 1997, 13 years ago and they're still going strong. BMRC formed in 1998, 12 years ago, likewise.
WRT U2 and PJ, IMHO: the alternative pantheon can manage these gracefully aging pioneers along side relative newcomers DCFC and BRMC. They're not "business competitors," they're artists.
Enjoy the art. . .
overuse of acronyms, IMHO.

Your day is nice when hear a bad song?
Nice one!
Come to one show and I guarantee you will change your tune. Just one show.

Awesome track.
I hope he keeps singing. PJ included!
It's memorable alright, but not in a good way. Sounds kinda like he's forcing it too much.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Never too much Any Pearl Jam is too much. Good crappy selection not often heard, which is good.

Ah. I see. The forums are only for positive comments. Now I know.
Tss tss tss FlatCat NO not only :) You know this guy Voltaire? He wrote this some 200 and something years ago "I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it. "
And this song, sometimes I like it. Sometimes I cannot stand it. So what I need is a flexible rate. Today I love it :)
If its acoustic it sure is.
