Drums are loud, and it's difficult for even close mic'd acoustic string instruments to compete with them. My guess is that each of the two guitars and the bass have some sort of active electronics, so the sound engineer can isolate them in the mix. And in an environment like that in the video, the guitars and bass are probably being played straight into the mixing board rather than through mic'd amplifiers, which would indeed isolate them from the drums. That said, like acoustic guitars with active electronics, acoustic bass guitars with active electronics have a distinctive sound which differentiates them from electric basses.

I really like the original version of this song.  I have never liked re-mixes.  On this recording you miss the best part of the song---that deep eerie repeating bass hook that throbs the whole way through

Bill must be a true fan...so much Cure airtime.

The Cure was one of my favourite bands back in the eighties {#Dance} 

But I only listen to them @ radioparadise lately....

Saw a local (South West) band called Shelanagig recently - really good evening - realised half way through that if the power had gone, they could have carried on and sounded exactly the same (just a little quieter) - really acoustic.

The Show video has the great version from the Wish tour referenced below.  I ripped that concert's audio to CD years ago and listen to it often.  The video is well worth seeking out as a blast from the past.

At the beginning of the song there's a little guitar lick that sounds like it's played in the wrong key or something like that, anyone else notice it? Apart from that I tend to like the version, I must have played the original thousands of times back in the day. This version is a little less spacy/gloomy than the original I think but has some more spontaneity to it.

I'm have goosebumps on this one. Suddenly transformed to listening to the cure on my friend Dylan's walkman (the first one-the big heavy metal one), walking in the north country NY in 40 below snowy nights, snow so cold it crunches underfoot, you can hear it over the walkman. And the Cure transforming my musical tastes from Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith to everything alternative, new, innovative, and not mainstream. Ah, the high school years.
