How are you going to top yourself
When there is nobody else?
How are you gonna do it by yourself?
'Cause I'm not gonna be here to help you, yeah

How you gonna top yourself
When there is nobody else?
How are you gonna do it by yourself?
'Cause I'm not gonna be here to help you

How you gonna do it alone?
When I don't pick up my phone
I'd love to give a dog a bone
But I'm not gonna stick around to help you

Yeah, how you gonna stop yourself when
Your man stops ringing your bell? (Your bell)
You're right between heaven and hell
And you're gonna need the good lord to help you

How I'm gonna make you see?
That this ain't no way to be
See you been getting it all for free
Guess you better get a sugar daddy to help you

Such a little girl, like a spinning time mama
But she's spinning out of control
Takes sleeping with a snake like you to
Rip apart my soul

Rip apart my soul
Rip apart my soul

How're you gonna rock yourself to sleep
When I give up my midnight creep, girl?
How're gonna get that deep
When your daddy ain't around here to do it to you?

Yeah, how you're gonna do it alone?
When I don't pick up my phone
I'd love to give a dog a bone
But I'm not gonna stick around to help you

Top yourself
Top yourself
Top yourself

well?
Kick ass album!!! Can't believe it came out 14 years ago!!
These guys put on an incredibly rockin' live show. Go see 'em if you ever get the chance. Won't be disappointed.

No shit. I always turn it up when I hear him and I wasn't sure it was until I looked!

Bill, keep on saying it like you do, it's just perfect and WHO CARES if it does sound like French or Finnish!

Like many words, it is both French and English -- with different meanings & pronunciations.  I pronounce it the way it's pronounced in English (as I suspect the band themselves do).
All right, all right, all right.

This is the second Jack White during last couple hours. What's the deal?

He's not  that good of a guitar player (did he just learn the slide for this song?).

He vocals are ragged.

The lyrics are ho hum.

The band is mediocre.

What gives?
I don't really understand why young Jack has so many detractors. Sounds like rock n' roll to me.
Self-Parody from Jack {#Ask} ~
Like it or don't, this is music that demands to be heard. Not good as Muzak.
Wish I could have gone to Jack's $3.00 concert when he was here in Anchorage this last spring.  Too short of notice for working people with responsibilities.  Or maybe I was just being too responsible.  Should have gone.
You tell em Jackie
Mama does count as topping oneself ? Looks like doubling.

Watched it again last night, but certainly have never felt that Jimmy was smug (on the contrary), nor did I feel that Jack wiped the floor with anything other than perhaps a mop. Don't get me wrong, I love JW's music and consider him a noteworthy talent, but I thought the movie brought together 3 wonderful and diverse talents in a very accessible way.

Interesting album cover

Nothing new. Nothing unique.

The standards are so low for R n R bands in the 2000s. It a person can play some simple chords or a slide, it like "oh my God,,,this is the next Jimmy Page".

RIP...R n R. You had a heck of a run.

Jack White held up pretty well next to Jimmy in "It Might Get Loud".  That film was a lot of fun.  Except I could have done with less of Edge.
Jack White SO wants to be Led Zeppelin all by himself.
Thanks to the rest of The Raconteurs for tempering that, if only just a little.

A "wraith"?  It's interesting that a 21st-Century American would be using 18th-Century, Scottish vernacular, unless there's now some silly "vampire" TV show on the WB that uses the term. Is someone's resemblance to a ghost a reason to dislike them?
This band flat out rocks. A cool, diverse collection of songs from both albums. I wish I had a chance to see them live.
Pretty certain it's a minority position, but I think this is dreck, as is pretty much everything else I've heard Jack White do. Some of the instrumental parts are enjoyable, but the vocals and slide work grate on my nerves.

Gee.... I wonder why.

Psyched to hear Jack has gotten the Raconteurs back together to record another album.
This is actually pretty good.  Perhaps I owe Jack White an apology ...

It is the French word for "Story Tellers" but the way you say it, the closest plausible thing I can think of is "Racoon tueurs". "Tueurs" is the French word for "killers" {#Roflol}

LOL! On another tack, that cover reminds me of the closing 'party' in the old Brit comedy film "Carry on Camping". One for Brits of a certain age and disposition, mind.

Quite a fun track, very White Stripes-ish as someone's already commented. 7 from the Nottingham jury.

Okay, that website is just creepy.  The speaker's eyes FOLLOWED MY CURSOR.  I think I'm getting paranoid, and cartoon figures are out to spy on me and steal all my secrets...  I'ma have nightmares for weeks.  Thanks a lot, Mr. Jack White and your band of raccoon turds.

Seriously, though - I like this song.  And I wll never visit the above-listed website again (at least, not without drugs.)

Wouldn't one have to be a contortionist in order to top one's self?  Just wondering...

I pronounce it "gaht-yyyyyeeeeeeeeeeee". But that's just twisted ol' me.
Lots of energy...but no explosion... just one more spark...drummer, lead guitar-? Something that takes it to the rafters,...
But good enuff for a 7. I like it... I like intelli-gent lyrics and some phrasing that makes a statement... What would Bob Plant do with this-?
Maybe next album... Do thes guys know what the Brits mean when they say "Top your self"-? Not surei

i hear adam sandler's "opera man" of years ago

This is probably my favorite Raconteurs song... it's amazing. :)

I liked someone's comment that it feels like it wants to explode.  If it blew up into something moshpit-worthy, it might get me going along with it.  I suppose others might emphasize that tension, waiting and expectation as the real kicker of the song.  To me, it feels more like a promise unfulfilled.

This sounds like the Black Crowes meets Zepplin?  So uninnovatingly derivative.

Now Dread Zepplin is a mash-up.

Agreed.   Love that song and the whole cd with Loretta.
LOve it.. ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS
Jack still sounds like he's about to explode at any second. PulL iT!

Crank it up!  The entire album is playable over and over.  Grammy nominated for best rock album, Grammy winner for best-engineered album.  Saw 'em live at Austin City Limits, blew us away.

Hrm, I gotta give that trophy to Tom Morello.  Jack White is perhaps more unique in his sound.  I'm still not a huge fan though.

white stripes only good. oddly enough, i like white stripes but for different reasons.

incidentally, the photo up there is only about 1/4 of the total photo. like the instruments they use, they must have insisted that the photographer use vintage equipment. look like its an authentic dageurrotype or tintype.

Yeah, that's a good one.

This has to be one of the top albums of 2008. I belive nearly each song on the album has radio-potential. btw - their website is kind of odd ;)

I saw these guys on Austin City Limits a few weeks ago with my 14 yr old son. We were both amazed at how well these guys jammed. It was really intense, and White is a really good guitarist. They just worked so well together, the chemistry was perfect!
Fantastic CD -- all the way around!
Excellent album! If you enjoyed this track, pick it up.
Very funky! I give it an 8.
Jack White. American Badass.
Strong Zep influence on this track.......
Not bad. Not life-changing, as others on here seem to feel, but a solid song.

I upgrade this every time I hear it. I think Jack White is a guitar god, and love the intensity of his voice.
sirrus wrote:

Heh... I am a fan of the minimalist thing from the Stripes and Meg's drumming lends itself well to that. But I sure hear you... this is a much better outlet for Jack especially with a real rock drummer and all...

I agree. In particular, his mastery of the Digitech Whammy has resulted in some amazing guitar work.
Just heard this for the first time. Had to give it a 10. Astounding.. IMHO.
I like this a lot more than the White Stripes. Why sound bad when you can sound good?
Jack White may be on the way to setting the world record for coaxing unique sounds out of guitars and amps. Maybe when his firepower starts to subside, he'll come back home to Detroit to reload. Nashville? Give me a break.
...yes, i'd swear this was a white stripes track, negligible straying from formula to my ears...

Undoubtedly Jack White... Very decent. It's hard not to compare them to the Stripes! But I will try to listen to them as themselves.... :-)
