She left a week to roam
Your protector's coming home
Keep your secrets with you, girl
Safe from the outside world

You walk along the stream
Your head caught in a waking dream
Your protector's coming home
Coming home

As you lay to die beside me, baby
On the morning that you came
Would you wait for me?
The other one would wait for me

As you lay to die beside me, baby
On the morning that you came
Would you wait for me?
The other one would wait for me

You run with the devil
You run with the devil

Tell your brother to be good
Tell your sister not to go
Tell your mother not to wait
Tell your father I was good

As you lay to die beside me, baby
On the morning that you came
Would you wait for me?
The other one would wait for me

That's hilarious

You make a dramatic comment about the song (ie. it's all about male superiority and such) and then snicker at the responses?!  Someone has a superior attitude, but I don't think it's the writer of the song,
As you lay to die beside me, baby, on the morning that you came
Would you wait for me? The other one would wait for me

Uhh... wtf, is that like South Park Chef singing "Simultaneous Loving"?
Just a brilliant mix @Billg - thanks for everything - always... On days like this when it's literally HELL outside and burning down the forests.  I get to listen to a diverse, eclectic, lovely mix of music that allows my mind to move with melody, harmony and create a world of meaning that is my own for a few minutes until the next world shows up and I get to create again.

i heard this as her protector being her husband/betrothed/father and the narrator being her lover...he certainly has another cued up...

Lovely song! Saw them live in Leeds with my daughters. A special night, audience spellbound by beautiful harmonies and music you just HAD to LISTEN to!
When I read the "genres" it Wiki, I had to LMAO! ...at first, I thought it said one of them was "chamber pot"!
Nice! I never heard of them before. Thank You RP!

Tell that to Romeo.
Good song from an awesome album.

FF was scheduled to play my town on this tour but bad weather made them cancel. I think I missed a really great show. I still regret it.

Oboe? I can't even hear an oboe, let alone its pesky subtonic... I wonder if it's one of those things that once you've heard it, you can never unhear it, yet up to that point you'd never noticed it - like the sound of the jam jar being tapped in Bob Marley's Jammin' (it's there - you'll never unhear that now)
Judging by the album cover, this is a 450 year old tune.
Quaite loike it.

Pray and then get out there in the world.  He's there somewhere.  Dying in sync prolly not gonna happen, RP has another song about that......

Really like Father John Misty. This, not so much.

I concur.
On all accounts.
From loving the song, the lyrics, to wanting to die like this... with finding someone special, and being in sync.

It's sometimes all I can do to only spoon my dreams.
Ram Jam to Fleet Foxes. It's like suddenly seeing a cop in a speed trap when you're cruising down the highway

Okay song, but the subtonic played over and over by the oboe is irritating.
I like 'em!
When I first started to listen to RP, this was on frequent rotation. I remember thinking, wow! No need to look further for the soundtrack of good nights, days at work, and time spent cooking. Thanks Rebecca and Bill, and thanks all for the funny, wacky, and insightful comments. Alone and yet not lonely 🙂 P.S. Sorry for being extra cheesy

Seriously? You get that from some obscure lyrics that only the author really understands? I wouldn't be so quick to take offence until you're sure you're right.

Are there still diners and dive places that give free refills in Seattle? I lived there in the mid 90s, and nearly all of the places I used to go are no longer there or have been mega-gentrified. Still a good city for sure...but different than the one I lived in back then.

I kinda like his voice in this one and enjoy this piece (those war drums always get me), it is off the beaten track but really kinda cool   : )
Excellent band. Too bad they split.

Have we done the "lay vs. lie" on this one yet?

He seems to be using "lay" as a past tense of the (intransitive) verb "lie", since the next line is in past tense:

...As you lay to die beside me, baby
On the morning that you came...

If so, then the grammar is correct, but the tenses are a little garbled in these lyrics.  Maybe he just guessed and got lucky.

Have we done the "lay vs. lie" on this one yet?
Yet again, I reiterate my wish that Fleet Foxes would put out some new stuff.
"Your protector" Geez isn't he just full of himself!!?

Thoroughly sick of this one.
Soon it's going to happen again, and the volume of songs in active playlists goes into equation, which will make it no less spookier.

My Morning Jacket.  A bit of Coldplay.  Snow Patrol.

Pecknold singing flat may well be part of the overall charm of the Fleet Foxes, and to be honest, I didn't mind the first 100 or so hearings.

However, now I can't help thinking how wonderful these songs would've sounded with a better singer.
Heard a little Paul Simon in the opening of this song.
