She told me not to step on the cracks
I told her not to fuss and relax
Well, her pretty little face stopped me in my tracks
But now she sleeps with one eye open
That's the price she paid I took a knife and cut out her eye
I took it home and watched it wither and die
Well, she's lucky that I didn't slip her a smile
That's why she sleeps with one eye open
That's the price she paid I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry I slipped my hand under her skirt
I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt
Oh, my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt
That's why you sleep with one eye open
That's the price you paid I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry You made me cry
You made me cry
You made me cry I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out my pie I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry

The comments for this track and the newly associated "thumbs" bring to mind a truism that I find since RP has switched to this "liking" system after the launch of the newer site.  Positive comments, no matter how vapid, rise to the top with all the likes.  Negative comments, no matter the level of critism, get thumb downed into oblivion.  Personally, I prefer having some discourse...a discussion about the song and/or artist.  I'd gladly do away with the "liking" of comments as I think its destroyed the flavour of these boards.  Or at the very least allow for a default of "by newest"....

Oh yeah, I'm sure this is going to get pushed down the board since I didn't just say, "this is the best band ever, go see them live..."

I was about to give your comment a thumbs-up, but that would be a self-defeating vote of confidence.
You're so right!
The human mind can be lazy. We find it much easier to approve or dismiss, to love our hate, to see black or white, male or female.... Our real worlds are, inconveniently, seldom binary. It takes a thought and cognitive effort to find qualifications that are reflective of the subject at hand.
PS: Unable to stop myself, I ended up giving your original post a thumbs up.

Music doesn't always need to be soothing. I love her for her intensity
One eye? Luxury!
Same for me...
her voice is annoying to me right now.
She is able to make a remarkable range of sound - I don't often like it but I appreciate the quality.
She always sounds like she's screaming and throwing a fit.  Thanks Bill for the 'forward' button!
Wow!!!!
Florence is really hit and miss with me, but I really like this one.
kinda the definition of “caterwauling,” ain’t it?

I really can't cope with her voice sounding as if she is constantly screaming. Gives me a feeling of urgency, alarm, hazard, as if something is going very wrong in her vicinity and she is warning me to get out of here as fast as possible!

But, taste is personal! So please keep playing this, for the sake of those in love with her voice!

This is the attitude people should take to music offerings. May not be your cup of tea but for the sake of those who enjoy it, keep playing, just as you may not like Peter Gabriel but BillG and I do.

Now that you mention this, I totally hear it!

Very well put.  I happen to like this one and other Flo tunes.  Yes, she has some pipes — she surely studied Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane fame, who once answered a question about how she got her distinctive sound and answered that "you just sing really, really loud."

I took it to mean her voice is flat, not referring to her anatomy......but that's just me.

The Hank Dogs has a more righteous vigilante feel to it, whereas this, given the lyrics & the singer, is pure jealous revenge.
Oi Florence. Wheesht.
No sir I don't like it!
When she starts bellowing, as she so often does, it gets old really quickly.
Learning nuance with her voice would serve her well

First time I've heard this song, OR Flo....I'm a fan! Yes, very sultry, sexy voice....don't care what her intent, great sound.

I do find the division of love her/hate her pretty strong for some reason which leads me to something I've noticed lately. The mean spirited comments. People, ease up on the extreme comments. If you dont like a song or artist, that's cool, we all have different tastes. But when I see comments like, "Bill, WTF is wrong with you"? or "Are you out of your mind for playing something like that"?, it really bothers me to the point of almost taking it personally. If you feel that strongly, go start a radio station yourself. If I don't like something, I know where the mute is. More than likely, a song will play in about 3-5 minutes. I have been blessed with the gift of hearing and we take it for granted sometimes. Let's all be thankful that Radioparadise is on the air because what if it wasn't around? There would be a great big hole in the internet radio world and that would be sad. I have been turned on to so many new artists over the last few years and I appreciate it. Thank you, Bill.

Great Song!

I looked this one up because I kind of like it in a Mack the Knife kind of way. It's a cover of a Ludes song. So, since it was originally sung by a guy I would bet the "one eye" isn't the one immediately thought of and the "girl" probably isn't a female. "Sleeping with one eye open" is a likely a pun on having to be watching out (for revenge I would assume.) I vote for homophobia related to cross-dressing as opposed to lesbian rape. Men tend to be laissez faire (or worse) on subjects of lesbian on lesbian violence, but finding out the girl you are hitting on isn't... Well, yeah. This kind of anger.

Thanks - I'd no idea that this was a cover. It's one of the most striking songs on the CD, right enough, and gets me there every time I hear it. I see your point, and can understand your interpretation, for the song sung by a man, but coming from Ms Lungs herself it's got to be an aggressive statement of lesbianism. She certainly sounds like she means it that way, and I can see Flossie being a woman who swings both ways, and is awful fearsome and undeniable in bed.

Bombastic is the word that springs to mind.
Next time I'm at home and my girls are out, I'm going to sit down in front of the stereo and crank this song as loud as I can handle it...  It sounds good even quiet at work, but I think it's the sort of song that would be even better at 110 db...
painful listening experience :(
ouch. pass me the tylenol. can we listen with both ears closed?
Jazz singer...yeah...jazz singer.

My streaming audio died out just before this one came on.  Mere coincidence, or the gentle hand of a benevolent God subtly intervening in human affairs?

Very well could be... but I was just thinking it was exactly what it sounds like.  No hidden meanings (beyond "slip her a smile" which is slang for slitting someone's throat, I believe).  I think it's a tale from the perspective of some Jack the Ripper type.  It doesn't entirely make sense because it's a sociopath's song.

Unpleasant.  Not to say that she isn't talented... I just can't stand her voice.

Someone please upload "Cosmic Love." It's my favorite song of 2010. And believe you, I never ever ever thought I'd say that... much less enjoy this gothy angst thing happening with Florence + The Machine (See also: the Twilightening of America).
Truly and deeply disgusting, in words and sounds and images. And I am pretty hard to shock.

I rather like this song actually, and everything I have heard from this group on RP.

Well put.  Johnette similarities notwithstanding, I was having a tough time listening to the music.  Then I looked at the lyrics and decided that I really just don't need this much hostility.

Her vocal affectations make it sound like she's producing a bowel movement while singing!
Sounded like Adele from a distance.

Sort of a cross between PJ Harvey and Tom Waits.  Pretty groovy.  Gotta check out her other stuff.

Pretty good Halloween-themed rock music too.

"Kiss With a Fist" from the same album is pretty good too.  Similar lyrics:

You hit me once
i hit you back
you gave a kick
i gave a slap
you smashed a plate
over my head
then i set fire to our bed
...
broke your jaw once before spilt your blood upon the floor
you broke my leg with your touch
sit back and watch the bed burn
well love sticks sweat drips
break the lock if it don't fit
a kick in the teeth is good for some
a kiss with a fist is better than none
a-woah a kiss woth a fist is better than none
