As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, aw huh
I'm a lucky man to count on both hands the ones I love
Some folks just have one, yeah others they got none, aw huh
Stay with me, oh let's just breathe
Practiced are my sins never gonna let me win, aw huh
Under everything, just another human being, aw huh
Yeah, I don't wanna hurt, there's so much in this world to make me bleed
Stay with me, you're all I see
Did I say that I need you?
Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn't I'm a fool, you see
No one knows this more than me
As I come clean
I wonder every day as I look upon your face, aw huh
Everything you gave and nothing you would take, aw huh
Nothing you would take
Everything you gave
Did I say that I need you?
Oh did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn't I'm a fool, you see
No one knows this more than me
As I come clean
Nothing you would take
Everything you gave
Hold me till I die
Meet you on the other side
Keep your chin up! I wish you my very best!
Bless you OlderGentleman and I hope you made it back to shore our friend.
Why do people have to be so snarky when they don't like a song? Why can't they just refrain from posting, or at least temper their words of hatred with a little softness? Why do they feel that cynical comments will somehow vindicate their opinions?
I don't understand it. I respect their opinions, but oh, to read them...especially when they're aimed at a song I like (this is MY opinion, and I'm not speaking for the masses here) makes me wonder if I'm lacking somehow. Maybe I missed the memo that said "Hate this song - attack this song - attack this artist and everything he/she has ever done." I know I'm not well-educated or well-versed in PearlJam-dom - or any "dom" for that matter. I know what I love. To see such hatred of a song is scary to me.
Maybe I don't belong here. I love the music played here, even if at times I don't understand it and can't embrace it. It's still music, and I'm grateful for it. I fear there will come a time when we won't have music at all, and we'll have to remember all the songs we've heard here - for good or for bad - and call upon them when we'd otherwise have empty air fit only for breathing and not for grabbing wonderful music from out of the everywhere into the here.
Uh, shutting up now.
Bumped to a 10 because of this post..
How did they go from so good on the first album, to absolute suck?
How did your comment just go from a comment I thought I should read to realizing your comment was even more suck?
Bump.
This may be my favourite Cynaera post.
Cynaera's posts continue to reflect an insightful and caring force of nature. May Cynaera's soul live on in Radio Paradise posts for ever.
Have always liked this tune since RP introduced it to me, but it means a lot more to me since I was diagnosed with the big C. Don’t want this to be a downer post because I AM going to beat this. Everyone remember to hug your loved ones.
Sending you all of the good vibes!❤️

Its sentiments are sometimes a bit on the nose but heartfelt. It always brings real emotion to me. I hope my family remembers my love for it and plays it at my funeral because I could never write anything as good as this to sum up my feelings in life.
Here is a version of Willie Nelson's cover people are mentioning, with his son Lucas (who sounds just like his dad!).

Thank You for the info,
having lost my sweet wife just a few months ago, this song hit me infinitely harder than I could have imagined
Yeah things like that catch you out of the blue. Reet Petite, Jackie Wilson and the Housemartins version of Caravan of Love bring back happy memories but sadness of the loss. 12 years now for me but there's still a life to be lived. She will always be with you.

Through RP, I found out that Willie Nelson has a version of this song. It is almost as good.
I bet! Cool! I have to hear it! Thank You for the info!

Haven't heard it, but I can see how this would be in Willie's wheelhouse.

Blessings to you, my friend
Pearl Jam was truly ahead of its time

My sweetie and I both love this song. As other(s) have mentioned, I also feel like a lucky man, for the same kind of reasons. Vedder and the whole crew are a force for good in this world, and I see that as another reason to count my blessings. Especially in the hellscape before us now.
Three years later. Gettin' hotter.

Feel like I'm closing in on the same. 42 years now. A miracle in itself.
Pearl Jam really are an exceptional band. I've come a bit late to this conclusion, but hey, some good things take time. Eddie Vedder's voice is superb.
Me too. Thanks to RP

I feel the same way about opposing political views.
Debate is good. Vicious, evil comments not so good. From either side.
is this a Willy Nelson song? Heard him singing it on 6 music the other day. Like both versions
Willy did a cover. It's a PJ original.
Sneaky, BillG.

Great post Cynaera
My thoughts on the subject:
Music snobs are exactly that - Snobs.
Music is music.
You don't like country? Great.
You don't like jazz? Great.
Don't like this band or that singer? Great.
Who cares?
Music snobbery makes no sense to me and possibly annoys me a bit!
Music is music.
Sss...NOB..bery is Snobbery. I don't care for your snobbish opinion.
Thanks Cynaera for a considered and long overdue post.
I have true catholic tastes. I love music.
To those of you who are arty-farty - go and live your lives of "oh, the tune is off-key" or "The lyrics are so maudlin.". This song is about something you'll probably never understand. I pity you, if a song like this makes you bored or disgusted. We're all entitled to our opinions, and mine is that this song covers so much emotional territory in such a short space that it's astonishing to me. I love it.
I'm really tired. And miles to go before I sleep.
Miss you, Cynaera.

I think many people wish they were more visible and successful in life so they feel somehow superior when they can denegrate others
I guess I could say that any music I like less that someone else is "over rated", but what does that mean exactly? And besides, do you know absolutely that he is not Jesus Christ?
I saw his library card once at a bake sale; it didn't say "Jesus Christ" on it.
Sorry Wrangler
I'm sorry for your loss. I experienced the same loss 19 years ago and certain songs and memories can hit me hard when I least expect it. Things get better and life moves on and the pain lessens but it never goes away.
Personal preference, I do prefer Willie's version (it's soft, tender and sweeter), but I always appreciate knowing the proper origin of a song and hearing it sung from the artists that wrote it. Thank you! If you like this song, check out Willie's version!
Take care Wrangler.
Yea, his voice moves me to tears, and nausea as well.

Sorry to hear that. I dread the thought of it happening to me, but RP is a good place to be while you adjust to your new reality.
I've never had a problem with people posting song criticisms with explanations or justifications, something that sheds a little light on their opinion, even if it's contrary to my own.
What I never understand are the posts that just say "sucks" or "barfo" and that's it. Like, what are you supposed to do with that information? Spacedog769 thinks Moondance sucks - duly noted. I don't get the point of these pans that, with no clarification or cleverness, that just kind of say "I'm here and I don't like it". Maybe it's kind of a release valve that makes people feel better after hearing a song they don't like?

You nailed it - this song is capable of evoking feelings and sensations in me that are normally only triggered by nature. The combination of this song and the scenery along the Highway 20 drive are a perfect pairing! Oh, how I miss the Wood River Valley!

The soundtrack to "Into the Wild" has a similar feel. All songs for the soundtrack except one were composed by Vedder. He wrote some of the songs while hanging around the movie set. 8→9 - this song is very touching.

See Ann....we'll NEVER let you shut up! Another bump on a great post of yours.
I missed most of your posts during the time I was mostly off RP doing benefit coding for the ACA (which I still "lovingly" call Obamacare) and even though you physically died before I came back, I feel as if I know you, based on your sweet song comments and how well respected and adored you (were) are (right Lazarus?) - so you really are still with us! And you for sure belong here, then, now, forevermore. PEACE and Long Live RP!!
Oh....I came to post on this song about how much I like this song despite my feelings for PJ (and the "grunge" scene in general) - and as a Bob Dylan fan, I'm OK with Eddie's vocal style. This song does sound like it could have been on the Into the Wild soundtrack. PEACEOUT

I'm pretty sure you mean John Frusciante, some people get confused because apparently this guy from Peral Jam also had a beard and long hair at some point

It's Eddie's take on Bob Dylan's "Yes'n...", just at the end of the line instead of the start.
(and wow, spooky Bela Lugosi-Gilligan watching Sally Field on the "Danger Danger" Robot during armageddon!?! deep Art fur sure : )
PJ is so far beyond grunge its not even funny - 25 years later.
Was Pearl Jam ever really "grunge"? I mean, if they weren't from Seattle, nobody would have lumped their music in stylistically with Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, etc. Disclosure: I'm a big PJ fan.
Love this band. If you can, check them out live. Amazing shows.
Great tune. It does make me appreciate Neil Diamond now that you mention it.

That made me laugh out loud. tx
PS, this is my very first RP comment.
Many times the casually expressed low-key songs are great and stands the test of time.
For me anyway.
Whooo—eee—-boy.

Love this song.
Picked up the CD the day before leaving on vacation and played it on the rental car CD player driving across Idaho with my wife and daughter. After this song finished I looked over at my wife and we were both puddled up.
sensitive words chokes me too - deeply touching and mournful lyric
What an unnecessarily cynical comment. Lighten up.
More like a middle aged guy who deeply loves his wife and decided to write an adult love song.
And the bands fans, male and female (especially female) many of whom have been with them since Ten, love singing along with this one, especially the beautiful chorus.
Depressing, but I like it anyway.
Yup. Just a minor correction -- it's Bill and 'Becca. She may not be as visible on the station, but she has a definite contribution on what is played here.
Myself, I've always believed in trying to contribute more positively to the comments here (and this is more directed at the person you're commenting on). Yeah, maybe it is more boring than some of the negative comments, but I feel there's enough negativity in this world of ours. I don't like everything that is played here, but even then, it's nice being exposed to new music of all sorts, even if the "new" songs are just old once I've not heard before.
