Stranded here on planet earth
It's not much but it could be worse
Everything's free here, there's no crowds
Winter lasted five long years
No sun will come again I fear
Chemical harvest was sown
And I will wait for you
Until the sky is blue
And I will wait for you
What else can I do?
A spaceship from another star
They ask me where all the people are
What can I tell them?
I tell them I'm the only one
There was a war but I must have won
Please take me with you
And I will wait for you
Until the sky is blue
And I will wait for you
What else can I do?
It's not much but it could be worse
Everything's free here, there's no crowds
Winter lasted five long years
No sun will come again I fear
Chemical harvest was sown

Is there really a ponderous, overly dramatic and cliched band named "Porcupine Tree" that has actual fans who recognize and cheer for their waaay overwrought tunes? I though we left all this behind when arena rock died back in the early 80s.
Not their best...but still good.

Thanks for the live one,Bill!

That had to be an amazing concert.
Opening guitar lick sounded like the Skynyrd's "Simple Man."
I recognized A Smart Kid by the very first cord....
Having said that, this isn't my favorite PT tune,

I was at this performance at the Tabernacle. It is real, and was outstanding.

Auto-tune on a live performance? Is that possible? I very much doubt it, though - Steve Wilson & Co are very good musicians and I'd be surprised if they used any artificial aids to their instruments or voices.
There are an awful lot of sucko-barfos for this, which is very strange considering how popular PT songs are usually on RP. And once again, I have to express my deep gratitude to RP for introducing me to this band, which have been a revelation and which I'd never have heard otherwise. I'm just kicking myself that I missed them when they played Nottingham last year.
Don't beat yourself up too much FR. These guys tour a LOT. You'll get to see them

I can pretty much guarantee that PT doesn't use AT. I've seen them live 6 times and both SW and Wes very occasionally get a bit sharp and/or flat on the vocals hehehe
Sounds to me like Steven's vocal is possibly being doubled by a keyboard part, which could give the effect of auto-tuning. I can't see PT using auto-tune unless it's as an effect, as opposed to correcting an out of tune vocal line.

Hetrodyne with the keyboard .. natural occurance with a singer is in tune within a few Hertz. Serious doubt if these guys would ever use AT. I've heard them in concert several times and at one rehersal and they au natural. Well, they actually had clothes on, but YKWIM.

From Wikipedia: "Auto-Tune is available as a plug-in for professional audio multi-tracking suites used in a studio setting, and as a stand-alone, rack-mounted unit for live performance processing."
That being said, I seriously doubt a musician of Steven Wilson's caliber and reputation would use AT as a means to cover mistakes. . .

I've liked the Tree since the mid-90s. Like the selections this evening chilling on the Outer Banks
My favorite band...as for the rest of you, "I will wait for you"

Steven Wilson would only use AT ironically.
That said, what I think you're hearing (in the chorus, I assume) is just a combination of his inflection and wavering distance from the mic.
Am I hearing Auto-tune on the vocal? OUCH!

There is a live autotune filter, but this definitely isn't autotuned.
ASK isn't my favorite PT tune, but this is a nice version.

I really, really hope you're wrong. I personally don't hear it, but if they resorted to using auto-tune, that would be a sad day for music. PT always gets an 8 or higher from me, but if I knew they used AT, I would have to rethink my ratings, soley on principle.

Sweet! One of my PT favorites. Hadn't heard this version before.
Nice!
Saw 'Sir Tarquin Underspoon' @ Radio City this past Friday. Great show, but surprised at the large # of empty seats.
Thanks Bill!
Great pick!
Also thanks for introducing me to Porcupine Tree way back when.
I just got this album (which is called "Atlanta" (download only and the profits go to ( (click here) ) the Mick Karn Appeal whom has cancer) and I love it; the live version o f Halo on it rocks!
Also this song (A Smart Kid) has been growing on my the past year. I enjoy what I think I hear as a geiger counter about half way through the song with some breathing noise like your in a radiation suit.
