Helplessly hoping her harlequin hovers nearby
Awaiting a word
Gasping at glimpses of gentle true spirit, he runs
Wishing he could fly
Only to trip at the sound of goodbye

Wordlessly watching, he waits by the window and wonders
At the empty place inside
Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams, he worries
Did he hear a goodbye?
Or even hello?

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are four for each other

Stand by the stairway, you'll see something certain to tell you
Confusion has its cost
Love isn't lying, it's loose in a lady who lingers
Saying she is lost
And choking on hello

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are four for each other

Hopefully not.  It would be depressing to have a world in which one song would be the gold standard by which all must be measured.
The finest alliteration in songdom.

Everybody has different tastes.  I like it!

SUPERB!!  I bought this album right after it was released. I was 14yrs old. WNEW FM 102.7  (NYC)  used to play it a lot.  Thanx RP!
Painfully awesome song

William segued to this from Patty Griffin’s What You Are
Another brilliant segue that seems so obvious but only after you hear it.

"Don't know if your ass was drilled, bored or pecked out by crows." ( must have been in a movie.)
I doubt that Joe Rogan can harmonize like this.

Ha!
The B side to Marrakesh Express - two great songs on one 45. No Mr Young whining along, either.

I just wish for once...I could harmonize like this.

It's how they all nail it at the beginning of each verse.

This is freaking out of this world.

What's the problem?

I do everytime it comes on!
Pure and so harmonious ✌️
Regardless of how much drama went on beyond the scenes when they put down this track, it is superlative harmonizing in all respects.

Brings me back to my first concert back in 1974, I was all of 13.  Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell and Jesse Collin Young.  Roosevelt Raceway, thanks big sis for taking me!!
This is the track I play when I need to justify the cost of my hi-fi system to my wife.
I just wish once...I could harmonize like this

There ain't no fancy filters on this recording

Just pure vocals
Not again
I agree these are great musicians and singers. But you know when you overuse an effect?
This is really beautiful

Of course! It's called "Gimme Shelter" by the Rolling Stones!
What a great song. And a fine example of big time alliteration... I can almost picture the songwriting process.
I try to sing along with this song, but can never make it to the end because my throat seizes up with emotion.

It was a breath of fresh air when it came out.  Calming after all the crazy that preceded.

Not a bad song on it.  Nice from beginning to end.  Springfield meets The Byrds meets The Hollies.
@Bill - pls include The Byrds album if not already in the playlist - always takes me back to cruising around RSA and Lesotho with that album on loop

This is the first time I've ever heard this song on headphones. It was already amazing... this even better.
Une harmonie magnifique. Chanson intemporelle et immortelle.
In general I do n0t like disparaging posts about the musical opinions of others. . . BUT . . . I have to concede that I agree with this comment 100%!  I had this on vinyl, 8-track, cassette, cd, iPod, and would take it to heaven, but I'm pretty certain God already has an original cut.

So amazing to discover this so long ago and be reminded at the amazement so many years later.  The voices just blended perfectly and the musical drive and creativity behind them was beautiful.

A solid 10.  Chills throughout the entire song.
And when you listen, you can tell they didn't over-mix, over-produce the vocals. That's the real McCoy. Those are real voices harmonizing, not a sound board.
PSD'd from Alanis Morrissette; from the ridiculous to the sublime.
Last play Jan 25?
Let's get this gorgeous classic back in regular rotation!
beautiful
Still Godlike to me.
{#Wave}Outstanding harmonies. imho even better than Simon and Garfunkel. There hasn't been a band to surpass this sound in my lifetime. Thanks for playing this one!

I don't know what I was thinking - my rating was only a 9.  CLEARLY a 10!
Just WOW.

None if any mixing. Just pure unfiltered vocal bliss.

Did I hear, "Her hard lickin' lover's nearby"?
Old joke, but I couldn't resist.
Soooo gooooood.  So pure, so excellent.
Alliteration, meter, rhyme, excellent harmonies, and they NAIL the emotions of hoping helplessly.  A great song.
I'm not a CSN fan, but I have to admit I like this one.{#Cheers}

I'd left my original vinyl with an ex-wife years ago. Later a friend handed over his entire collection, which included CS&N in the original sleeve. I dutifully cleaned it on a VPI machine and cued it up...oh, lord, it sounded like it had been played with a railroad spike. Simply unlistenable. Well, I still have the vinyl in the sleeve, but today I listen to it on CD. Sigh.
Oh so God Llke.............10..........

Embrace the scratches and pops and hiss, like one embraces the scars and wrinkles that define a life well-lived.  Strange to hear this song without scratches and pops, actually.

(Tape a penny to the cartridge if the needle skips a groove — try a nickel if the penny isn't heavy enough — and don't forget to remove them after the record has finished.  You can literally wear out a vinyl LP this way.)
My 9th grade English teacher used this song to explain alliteration to us.

Ah, keep that safe and show it to the grandkids. Nice work!

Stills was on an internet chat recently talking about that cover - apparently they took it as a spur-of-the moment thing and only later did the cover designer point out that the fellows are in reverse order of the name order. So they went back to the house to re-take the photo and discovered it had been demolished.

Deliciously drifting to happy places of the past....

Great song!  Intelligent and beautiful writing and great harmony. Not enough of these traits in music today.  9 or 10 for sure!
