Jackknife with a precious load
Spills it's guts all over the road
Excuse me, I had to smile
Lost my grip too for a while
Easy there, steady now
Easy there, steady now
She didn't have the decency
To sweep away what's left of me
I don't have the presence of mind
To walk along in a straight line
Easy there, steady now
CHORUS
I call your name
I call it loud
I see your face
In every crowd
Nosebleed down the bathroom wall
Leaves a pool down in the stall
I wonder where you are tonight
Red dress, skin so white
Easy there, steady now
3 AM an empty town
Doctor Martens echo down
Old man Heartbreak follows you
Corruption's shadow swallows you
Easy there, steady now
CHORUS
Jackknife with a precious load
Spills it's guts all over the road
Excuse me, I had to smile
Lost my grip too for awhile
Easy there, steady now

1 all day long and half on Sundays.
One of the few Richard Thompson tunes I don't hit the PSD tab when it's played.
Years ago I learned if I didn't know the subject, I was better to keep my mouth shut than display my ignorance. Just sayin'

As nonsensical comments go, this is neither terrible nor faux (although I cannot begin to understand your point, if there is one...). I guess you get credit for authenticity.
Terrible and faux.

cool    {#Guitarist}
Sounds like cross tween David Byrne & Rusted Root frontman
Funny, I was just thinking, this sounds like a more-upbeat Nick Cave....
Did he ate Nick Cave? {#Nyah}
We are seeing the genius that is Richard Thompson again, in July at Bath, England, a solo gig this time.

Nope, it's Richard Thompson of Fairport Convention fame and much more...

I can hear what you're saying...  it's that chord interval in the harmony that really sounds like RR.

I can hear some Warren Zevon here too. Except that's not so good. Not my favorite sound to hear...

No, trust me, you really really really can't be serious.
Seems to be good music - why not for me?
RT is a must see live.

Good stuff - We need more Richard Thompson tunes here {#Music}
In my opinion there's nothing in this world beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl.

But I can listen to this with equal ease.

can't get  "PASSED" the voice — Did you get PAST the third grade

oh yeah - RT has a very cool and distinctive rock and roll voice

I am taking my 8 year old to hear him at play at the end of the month.
Can't wait....
Awesome musician, doing it purely for the love of music! If you don't "get it", then I urge you to try more of his music. But ultimately I couldn't care, I'm just happy I have some of his music in my collection! And you don't!
An overlooked talent indeed.
nick cave meets townes van zandt. i like. alot.
I'n not a big RT fan, but this is a pretty smokin tune.

Yes indeed, you are missing something. One could ask what you look for in music, what your general tastes are, etc. I do not consider Richard Thompson to be an acquired taste (more like instant acceptance), although apparently some do. If you really want to understand, borrow a CD or 2 from your library and find out. Otherwise, accept that your taste in music has limits. Too bad, if this is the case. His work over the past 3+ decades is remarkable.

Yes! Not just a gifted musician and songwriter, but an engaging and funny entertainer. I saw him during his 1000 Years of Popular Music tour. What a show!

Like many sublimely worthwhile things, RT can be an 'acquired' taste.

I'm totally hearing Bruce Cockburn in this tune.

Funny how different people react to a singer. When I hear Richard singing I turn it up. I have liked him for a long time. Of course if you really want to like him better see him perform. Every time I have seen him I come away thinking that was the best show ever. Listening to his music you have no idea the man is so funny.

My sentiments, as well. He gets plussed way up for his great playing but down for his vocal "stylings." So my length for this rating vector is a middlin' 5, but that really doesn't convey my regard for his talent.

Well then, I can get you some professional grade attenuation from the likes of Emtech, Precision, Westone, Sensaphonics, et al. for a few more pennies than you would spring for that mere drugstore putty. But you won't need 'em, cause this song's pretty cool.

Wonderful bass lines!
I share the feeling of many re RT's vocal style. But ever since I learned about 1000 Years of Popular Music, I've liked his sassy attitude. (The "1000 Years" backstory is great.) So I always give him a bit of a plus-up for that.

You shop at Mack's? Wow, you do have bad taste. That place sucks.
What a Bass! What a Beat! What a Tune!

This is the cat that Mark Knopfler copped some of his licks from. A true guitar player's guitarist. His voice appeals to those of us with a 'Celtic' heritage.

Where'd that come from? He's probably one of the top twenty guitarists in the world. But maybe just guitar players appreciate that...

I'll tolerate this comment about singing - like anyone with an idiosyncratic voice (Dylan, Neil Young, Tom Waits...), I know that Thompson can grate, and is an acquired tatse which some people don't acquire. But are you for real in claiming he can't play the guitar? Listen to him!

I agree with the creepy part - sort of reminds me of a stalker. Time to put on the mute.

I recently bought "Live from Austin, TX" and am sorry to say, there are only about 3 songs that I can listen to. "Persuasion" is my favorite, followed by "1952 Vincent Black Lightning", and then "Bathsheba Smiles". The rest of the album, I just can't really tolerate. That's not to say I don't think he's talented, though.
Reminds me a lot of Nick Cave, but I don't think I like the vocals all that much. Nick Cave's are raspy, and more emotional.

Yes! He's a great entertainer. Very amusing. I've seen him twice solo in a very small venue -- really compelling. I do think his voice is an acquired taste; I'd suggest focusing on the words while you get used to his voice. Maybe that'll help.

Yes you do. Then you'll end up buying more and more. This album is a good place to start.

Good guitar playing, so-so songwriting but the guy can't sing to save his life... Sorry, barely a 3 for me.

Thompson is incredibly underrated, which according to him is just where he likes it. Otherwise, he couldn't do what he does. Check out where he came out recently on the list of Rolling Stones' Top 100 Guitarists for a pleasant surprise. And yes, as a live act he is incredible, and quite funny to boot.
I saw Richard Thompson in Vancouver a while ago. He was doing the gig in an old Church. About five hundred people. I was about fifteen feet from him.

Saw him here in Austin a few years back on a double-bill with David Lindley. Terrific performances by both gentlemen.
This is interesting. EVERY time I hear this guy's voice I swear it's Nick Cave.

He may be an extraordinary singer in your opinion, but if someone disagrees with your opinion, the problem is still yours. I don't like his voice, but I have no problem with that at all. Looks like you do, though. (BTW, his guitar playing is very good, IMHO.)
Make it stop!
Hey this is really good!

Saw the same show. No one thought that anything could follow Hiatt, then Thompson stepped up an blew everyone away.

That would make sense. Compared to Thompson and Hiatt, McGuinn is a fossil.
IMHO this is Thompson's 2nd best album... So how about some stuff from You, Me, Us? ?

Mediocre for RT, but still nice to hear. Just saw him last weekend in Rochester...best guitarist I've ever had the pleasure of watching. If you like his stuff even a little and you get the chance to see him play live - GO.
Nonone else can write about and from the dark edges of the sould like RT.
I'm not sould on that
Was never a big Richard Thompson fan, but this one kicks some serious butt!

Wolftrap is an incredible venue. I saw Bonnie Raitt there around 1985 during a blue moon

Excellent - Thompson always challenges traditions but does it from a really strong foundation.
Despite his age, Richard Thompson\'s represents in fact the new age in folk-rock. Though, to say he\'s a folk-rock musician, is maybe a bit limiting.
Whoa Nelly. Easy there, Steady now, Whoa.
It\'s always great to hear someone play some Richard Thompson. Very good songs and a very underrated guitar player!
