The wretched desert takes its form
The jackal proud and tight
In search of you I feel my way
Through the slowest heaving night

Whatever fear invents
I swear it make no sense
I reach out through the border fence
Come down, come talk to me

In the swirling, curling storm of desire
Unuttered words hold fast
With reptile tongue, the lightning lashes
Towers built to last

Darkness creeps in like a thief
And offers no relief
Why are you shaking like a leaf?
Come on, come talk to me

Ah, please talk to me
Won't you please talk to me
We can unlock this misery
Come on, come talk to me
I did not come to steal
This all is so unreal
Can't you show me how you feel now
Come on, come talk to me
Come talk to me
Come talk to me

The earthly power sucks shadowed milk
From sleepy tears undone
From nippled skin as smooth as silk
The bugles blown as one

You lie there with your eyes half closed
Like there's no one there at all
There's a tension pulling on your face
Come on, come talk to me

Won't you please talk to me
If you'd just talk to me
Unblock this misery
If you'd only talk to me
Don't you ever change your mind
Now your future's so defined
And you act so deaf so blind
Come on, come talk to me
Come talk to me
Come talk to me

I can imagine the moment
Breaking out through the silence
All the things that we both might say
And the heart it will not be denied
Till we're both on the same damn side
All the barriers blown away

I said please talk to me
Won't you please come talk to me
Just like it used to be
Come on, come talk to me
I did not come to steal
This all is so unreal
Can you show me how you feel now
Come on, come talk to me
Come talk to me
Come talk to me

I said please talk to me
If you'd just talk to me
Unblock this misery
If you'd only talk to me
Don't you ever change your mind
Now your future's so defined
And you act so deaf so blind
Come on, come talk to me
Come talk to me
Come talk to me

A Truly incredible album by truly stellar artists!!!
What about Marillion instead?
VERY NICE TUNE!!!

Agree. And the stage act of this song is superb there, with Peter tugging the phone cable from the booth, until the returning force put him back. Life's Harmonic Oscillator.
It takes the genius of Peter Gabriel to NOT make bagpipes sound like squeezing a bag of cats.  Kudos!

Wow....that was a while ago now.  But if he plays that set every other wk, I'd have no complaints.

Sinéad was with PG on their WOMAD-USA tour in 1993.  I was at the Milwaukee, WI show - it still may be the single best music day of my life. So much great music.

I saw PG again in Milwaukee with the Milwaukee SO (2010?) and his daughter was the other half of the duet on that night.  More beautiful music.

LOL
This verson is so superior to the live version with Paula Cole trying to flex beyond her range. Sinead's voice is so beautiful and is a complement - always love to hear her backing others, as well as her own music. Peter Gabriel is generally interesting, if not sharing his latest self-analysis.

9-10, this is just a phenomenal song on a great album. I love the texture of his music, so much going on but it all fits.
Great artist, dreary song. Lighten up Peter. 5/10
I have the opposite problem, my dear kids are utter chatterboxes. If I wrote this song, It would go Please don’t talk to me. Dad needs a break:)
very interesting thread on this song...
I just can't with Peter Gabriel or U2 right now. They stole so many damn bagpipes from Big Country and The Alarm there should have been a criminal investigation.

My rating is 8  but this is not Peter Gabriels better tunes

I agree with the others; worst thing I've ever been through.  Would not wish it on my worst enemies.  And my kids were adults.  They and I have an extra-special relationship, perhaps in part because of it.  Help your friend find a little peace to start his journey back.

Aw, that's so great!!  I've seen Gabriel in concert, and it was absolutely amazing :)

How I wish I could attend with my own daughter...how fitting this song is for the two of us.  We haven't spoke in many years, though I'd sure like to.

There's really nothing to defend the length of this song. Way too much repetition and lack of build-up and construction. Just adding more instruments won't do it for me – if I need it at some point I can always dig up Tubular Bells. {#Roflol}

Though the rest of this album has too much bland world music - and I could seriously live without most world music - this track is outstanding.  Love Sinead on the harmonies.
Thia is a good Xmas tune...a feel good tune on this great holiday that celebrates joy and beauty and love and all that is good in this wonderful world...

The first song I ever (consciously) heard from Peter Gabriel. It was an instant hit. From this album, it's my second favorite after the (even more?) personal anguish of Digging in the Dirt. Turning the volume way up.

You will find this a lot- same set today. They craft sets with an "ear" toward themes or connections, and well in advance. One or more songs in a row may have night in common, or a producer, or any other thing you might imagine. The main thing is they think they work well together, and I really cannot fault them on any part of the set you reference.

The point is, you will not hear this same set for a while, and I do not think there is even a one or two week loop. Carefully cultivated variety- I love it. And, it gives them a chance to do other things like find more music, make more great sets, sleep, etc.

Bad news if you were hoping for a request line, though. Just not that kind of station.
LOVE Peter G. thanks Bill... this song gives me chills every time.

Wonderful song. Saw it live with Sinead O'Conner in London and it was a breathtaking performance.
Nice!

Amazing song. Fantastic live version on Secret World. One of the best opening to a concert I have ever seen. And that concert just got better all night.
There's really not much to this song, but that Babacar drum sound is like a great sauce - put it on anything and it'll be really good.
...thank you...
There is a huge wall of sound in this tune and it amazes me how he is able to produce this in teh live shows as well.

It's weird, it makes the song strangely anemic compared to the powerhouse that is the live version. (Paula Cole's voice didn't hurt either.)
I know that this song can sound good on a great system, but here's my system:

And I'm telling ya, even compared to other songs on the same album, the mix of the instruments is just a little off. Love 14 Black Painting's mix though.

Changed my rating from 8 to 9 after reading the lyrics. Thanks for that.

I never got why the song on the album fades out (at all, because fade-outs are the weakest possible ending), and given that it does, why it takes around 45 seconds to do so. There's practically half a minute silence before the beginning of "Love to be loved". But still, I give the song a 10. At least the live version does not fade out ;-)

A common misconception with Gabriel's recordings. Unlike most rock/pop artists Gabriel leaves his recordings mastered so they sound fantastic on a full range high end audio system rather than pumping them up to sound good on a transistor radio/Ipod.

Hence this sounds pretty muted on here , but sounds amazing on a high end system from the vinyl or CD whereas I suspect the BRMC rack preceding this will sound a bit 'lost' on the same equipment.

Sorry, but a 192K stream is not a good way to listemn to Gabriel's music.

Are you kidding? What a great gig. Visit places, talk about books and stories, get home at a decent hour... better than being on Celebrity Rehab, I'm sure. He looks happy enough. And yes, no fram oil filter. He probably had that written into his contract. By the way, love this album. Had it stolen two times so I've purchased it three times, keeping PG rolling in the dough.
