There she goes again
She's out on the streets again
She's down on her knees, my friend
But you know she'll never ask you please again

Now take a look, there's no tears in her eyes
She won't take it from just any guy, what can you do
You see her walkin' on down the street
Look at all your friends she's gonna meet
You better hit her

There she goes again
She's knocked out on her feet again
She's down on her knees, my friend
But you know she'll never ask you please again

Now take a look, there's no tears in her eyes
Like a bird, you know she would fly, what can you do
You see her walkin' on down the street
Look at all your friends that she's gonna meet
You better hit her

Now take a look, there's no tears in her eyes
Like a bird, you know she will fly, fly, fly away
See her walking on down the street
Look at all your friends that she's gonna meet

She's gonna bawl and shout
She's gonna work it
She's gonna work it out, bye bye
Bye bye baby
All right

60s Garage soared way, way above this.  Of course the others were one hit wonders who rapidly vanished unlike our dear, precious Velvet's

when I first started listening to the La's song, I thought it was a cover...then I heard more and wondered, 'are they children trying to write a less brutally honest tune?' but I doubt they listened to Lou Reed...

Yes indeed.  The R.E.M. rendition was the first version of this song I heard, to the point that I had to check what was playing just now.

That's just wrong, no matter your taste. This station could be better.

There is literally twenty years difference between these bands. If Cranberries is in heavier rotation, it's probably because more of the audience enjoy Cranberries than Lou Reed. It was the same way when VU was a working band. They were crowded out by insipid pop songs. This song is a half-hearted  attempt by Lou Reed et al at a radio friendly pop song. The Cranberries were a fine band, not great but good. A little confused.

Velvet Underground were always crystal clear in their paradigm. It just wasn't shared by the middle class. By the way, Andy Warhol spent more time attempting to get the album cover right than producing the album's music.

My first emoji banana!

As a tribute to Andy Warhol and the band he inspired.
If I remember correctly R.E.M. did a cover of this on Dead Letter Office which was pretty cool.

They play Hitch Hike on Sirius XM Ch. 21 (LSUG) all the time, and  I think that as well.

Pew, bad human, great song.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, aah, your opinion, man.

I still smile every time I hear her sing the word 'clown' in "Femme Fatale".
Is this the same listener person?

Yes it's a great photo. I'm facebook friends with Moe Tucker tho and wow is she ever a RWNJ. All day every day sharing things "deplorable" etc. Once in a while there'll be a really cool thing that's not related to politics, so I stay connected, but unfollowed her and only go there once in a while to look for the good stuff.

Interesting follow up to Hands Cannot Erase.

I don't recall Wilson mentioning Velvet Underground but I would safely assume that he did.

RP.

Such a fun upbeat cool sixties song ........about domestic violence.  Only Lou.

Don't get me wrong, I love it.  I love how challenging to the established order he and the VU were.

I hear Hitchhike too.  The song was originally written and recorded by Marvin Gaye in 1962.
Nice!

You're not alone there, and there's no reason to be sad about it!

The Velvets and Big Star each pretty much flew under the radar the entire time they were in their prime.
Sad to say that it was my discovery of REM in college and looking at their influences that I really listened to Big Star and the Velvet Underground - traditionally overlooked bands that had a HUGE impact on music!
RIP Lou
Lou Reed is beyond words....
Thank you for this. My vinyl is very old and with scratches, so bad to hear!
Love this band, and this song.
Stones' version of "Hitchhike."

It would have been awesome to be there.

The best I can due is post a pic of Lou nursing a stiff drink at Max's while hanging with Iggy (who was then in his "junkie-surfer" phase).

Max’s Mention: Lou Reed
You should have seen him at Max's Kansas City way back when.....I don't think the Byrds is a good follow-up, perhaps a little more Lou.

A great station...keep it up.

See "The Original Wrapper" on 1986's Mistrial

Though Lou did actually sing on occasion. Say, "Pale Blue Eyes."

Thanks, nice recovery after that Cowboy Junkies abomination...

Nobody brings the grit and grime of NYC in the mid-60's back to you as well as Lou did.

My guess this can be explained by your hearing the REM version first.
ein geniales Album  yeah!!
Great song from an amazing album.

Requiescat in pace, Lou Reed.
Just another example how Lou Reed broke new ground - no one was doing songs about prostitutes before this! Wow - miss him already
RIP Lou...

So groundbreaking!

And I love his music.

That was the whole point, my friend. VU had the low-tech DIY ethos of punk rock decades before it became a movement.

It was partly a reaction to highly produced music like Phil Spector's 'Wall of Sound' style (also in mono, IIRC), and the polished voices of 'professional' singers.

But it sure ain't everyone's cuppa tea, I'll grant you that.

anyway...this is far from the best of the earliest period. So groundbreaking in so many other songs . I'll Be your Mirror/ Heroin/All Tomorrow's Parties /Waiting for My Man... really stretched the envelope.

Anyway, the lo-fi sound is part of the charm for many VU fans

What's going on? Has this turned into a rock and roll station?
I'll just have to wait for my man Bill to load some sweeter tunes and turn up the heat. This is just pale.

/ random critic on RP

P.S. this post is not for everyone, non-fans: no need to bother.
Nice set today ,Bill! Very nice!!  this LP of mine looks really horrible!! I carried it around with me in the early seventies, and played it when i was in my friends house!!  We all loved this music!!

Ugh. They must have used the same kind of tuner that Dylan did. {#Rolleyes}

He did write "peek at", indicating "a quick look" at, so the spelling is correct.  Stylistically, it would probably be better to avoid using a verb with visual implication to describe an aural experience - but that's just me, perhaps.  Great song, by the way.  What makes me curious about his post is why he is "amazed that rock 'n roll survived this era".

My, aren't you the tolerant one? It's not perhaps a little harsh to think that folk deserve to be burned to death for disliking a band? Or have I missed some subtle irony?

A fine enough song to my ears, having never even heard the VU in their heyday. 7 from the Nottingham jury.

Just play the entire album...any day is a VU day!!!

I realize your comment was written over 5 years ago, and VH1 had some marginal music relevance back then, but I don't watch VH1 anymore because they've somehow decided America is now more interested in has-been rehabbing celebs on the "fake" road to recovery, getting Flavor Flav & Bret Michaels laid on a consistent basis, and some bimbo named "New York".

You don't like the Velvets because VH1 disrespected the Beatles' album art. Okay.

Lou and the Velvets-a perfect pop band. Given the range of the band, many of their tunes would fit in.

Now, Lou, you know she could kick your ass all over Manhattan, so don't you threaten her with violence. Sure, you outlived Lester Bangs, but don't get ex-junkie cocky on us. Even Laurie could slap you silly and you wouldn't do anything but whine about it. Tough guy.
You kinda forget that Reed, et. al. actually wrote and played pop songs.
