To do no wrong she must confess
And then perhaps hitch up her dress
'Cos when the flashbulbs explode
She's such a sensitive soul...
I want a girl who is helpless and frail
Who won't pull on my ponytail
I want a girl who has no past
She's made up now
But that won't last
'Cos when she sits on my knee
And then she whispers to me
'Can't you see
I could be, I could be
Your spooky girlfriend...'
The broken toys are all scattered in the attic
Newspapers play with the words of the fanatic
While the greeting cards are your most poetic lyric
And the flat champagne is sweet sugar syrup
I want to paint you with glitter and with dirt
Picture you with innocence and hurt
The shutter closes
Exposes the shot
She says, "Are you looking up my skirt?"
When you say "No"
She says "Why not?"
I want a girl to turn my screw
To wind my watch, to buckle my shoe
And if she won't her mother will do
But when she does as she's told
We'll all turn platinum and gold
But when she sits on my knee
I hear her whispers to me
'Can't you see?'
'I could be your spooky girlfriend.'
GREAT!!! I love it!!! If you don't like it, hit the skip button! ...problem solved!
Why would anyone rank elvis song below 8 is beyond me
I am so friggin' sick of Costello
Spooky Elvis! Cool song... but my favorite all-time spooky Elvis song is "I Want You" from Blood & Chocolate. Anyone else?
The "King of America"/"Blood and Chocolate" era of Elvis is, to me, his most creative and most interesting ever.
Honestly, it stems from the temerity of calling yourself Elvis, doesn't it?
I had mine at 5... must have been in a bad mood... kicked to 7
Yeah, the lyrics have sexist (over)tones, but why assume the singer and the persona of the lyrics are the same?
A lot of EC's stuff is satire. This is as scathing about the man as the woman. On “Spooky Girlfriend,” he plays a skeevy ponytailed record exec ogling a young Britney type.
I always thought it indicated Diana Kraul's strong character to end up with Elvis rather than a pretty boy celebrity that usually comes with fame.
But I do like the bees...
:(

Also, I listen to gospel music and I'm an atheist and I listen to Ted Nugent and I'm not a right-winger. Trying to enjoy the music without a bunch of litmus tests seems more conducive to the whole eclectic approach.
"And if she won't her mother will do
Cos when she does as she's told"
Then it lost me.
The two lines you quoted belong to different couplets, I think. He wants a spooky girlfriend, because he's ..... ahhh ..... err .... he's got tastes slightly out of the ordinary (and don't we all in some way?).
I don't think he's espousing "in the real world" gender inequality.
With a mind like a diamond
I want a girl
Who knows what's best
I want a girl
With shoes that cut
And eyes that burn
Like cigarettes
Yes: TWITA!
Our DJ is going DeeJay
Uh, four thumbs-down from the Busey family. Too spooky. I tend to agree with these people. But that's just me.
Elvis Costello is nearly as painful to listen too as Dave Matthews' Band. I think there may be some similarities in the rhythms and tones that really grate on my music sensibilities.
You aren't from aren't these here parts, are you son? The highway is calling you. Answer the call.

I don't get a gender bend out of it, but maybe others see that in it. Some of the lyrics:
I want to paint you with glitter and with dirt
Picture you wit innocence and hurt
The shutter closes
Exposes the shot
she says, "Are you looking up my skirt?"
When you say "No"
She says "Why not?"
I want a girl to turn my screw
To wind my watch, to buckle my shoe
And if she won't her mother will do
Cos when she does as she's told
We'll all turn platinum and gold
The rest of the lyrics are easy to find by googling.
My interpretation is he's talking about a certain kind of woman the character in the song wants, which says as much about the guy as the woman. The guy's kind of a ruthless player type, the girl is kind of helpless and compliant and insecure and loose. I also interpret it as a play on the old hit by the Classics Four— "Spooky", in that song the loose woman had the upper hand and was leading a helpless boy around, in this song it looks like the roles are reversed completely from "Spooky".
I got a vane......connected to my toity
I'm completely with you on that one. Just don't get the appeal.
the name Elvis.....just turned me off...Now in my older age I can at least tolerant the whinny nasal nerd.... I would have respected him more if he'd chosen a name like Nerdly Geekson the 3rd.Esquire JR. ( the day after )PS....Spooky Girlfriend.....DUH!!!!!

Yes. I can't wait until we get past this exhausting and thick-headed cultural moment wherein we assume that because an artist is depicting something they must also be endorsing it.
