The sun is a light bulb, a candle's a treat
The curtains stay closed now on my little retreat
And I'll only take medicine if it's followed by sweets
A sickly pink liquid that puts me to sleep

My head beats a better way
Tomorrow a better day

And I can watch TV while I'm wrapped up in bed
And mother makes sure that I'm watered and fed
My best friends from school will come over and stare
At me in my bubble of germified air

My head beats a better way
Tomorrow a better day

When I'm asleep the smoke fills me
I feel the heat, my illness leaves me

My head beats a better way
Tomorrow a better day

When I'm asleep the smoke fills me
I feel the heat, my illness leaves me

The sun is a light bulb, a candle's a treat
The curtains stay closed now on my little retreat
But after a while the noise from the street
Is making me wish I was back on my feet

This sounds a little different from the album version I am accustomed to, anyone notice it is a little different?
Good post chinaski.

That said, a Porcupine Tree reunion album and tour would likely sell like crazy.
During the Hand Cannot Erase concert in Dallas on Nov. 15, 2016 Steven Wilson referred to Porcupine Tree in the past tense. Much as we'd like to see more PT by his conversation to the crowd I was left with the impression that the PT lineup of musicians and output as PT is done. He mentioned David Bowie and Prince as examples of ever evolving artists and so too with his projects.

That's Prog ress for you, pun intended.

Because you're a musician/songwriter, and that's what you do? Isn't recording solo albums basically the same thing, or has Wilson taken up basket weaving?

Thanks for the link - love Prog magazine.

Interesting interview:

"But while Wilson is fully focused on his album Hand. Cannot. Erase. which is launched on March 2, he’s not ruling out an eventual return to Porcupine Tree.

He says: “I suspect that if I did do it, it would have to be more like a side-project to what I do now. Why would I want to go back to a band now?

“But at the same time, Porcupine Tree has a special place in my heart and my career. I think probably we will make another record. Whether it will be the last, I don’t know."

An amazing run these last ten songs. Great for doing taxes. Keep it up!
Not my favorite PT song, musically fantastic, but lyrically leaves me cold.     if it was vinyl I would listen to it rather than turn the record over,

but in this day and age of the mp3 and the PSD, if pushed, I would press.

Porcupine is one of those groups for me that just plays in the background, I don't really dislike or particularly like them, just meh usually.  With a few exceptions and this is most certainly one of them. Great song. 8

When the Sony Walkman first became popular, a great many people were mugged in NYC (and likely other major cities) while wearing them.  I just remember it because I lived in NY back then.

Two young men died on railway tracks in Canada not so long ago.  One near Edmonton, Alberta; the other in Ontario.  Both were wearing MP3 players.

Socially acceptable suicide I guess.  Tragic nonetheless.

This song is such a wonderful celebration of growing up in a warm, secure household.

He hates the fact that music has been reduced from creating an 'album' that has a feel and a journey, to a 'hit single' with a bunch of garbage to be discarded or simply not downloaded.  Yes I own an ipod, but am old enough and have the attention span to keep it off shuffle and enjoy albums as they were meant.  Plus it helps me ignore the The Doobie Brothers blaring in the supermarket!

I went driving with one of my co workers a couple of years ago and he brought his ipod along. I never got more than one song by an artist the whole trip of several hours. It was very disconnected.

When I listen to music (when I'm not on RP) I listen to entire albums where the artist can paint a mood, expression, etc. And that is what Steven is trying to get across both in his music (The Incident clearly points this out) in that an album is a vehicle that the artist uses to portray their artistry. Not a collection of random thoughts and "selling points". Sure other artists do this as well, but the point here is that ipods tend to disrupt this concept with their shuffle play and playlists. Ultimately it comes down to youth and how they listen to music and again, it's a criticism of that as well.

It's one thing for an artist to voice his or her opinions about their dissatisfaction about different aspects of the listening public, it is another to do something creative that has a lasting, impressionable impact on the greater society about their dissatisfaction towards listeners tastes and habits.

Steven hit the nail on the head. Or shall we say ipod.

Oh, you forget they stand to profit from CD sales better than electronic sales of individual songs.  They realize that electronic formats alow there music to reach a larger market, but hate cherry pickers (I-pods).

Oh?  Where did Steven Wilson exhibit such childish behaviour?

The bigger question is will Steven Wilson Inc. benefit or lose from such violent behaviour?  Techically it is violent even if it was performance art and no laws were broken.

Now if offended i-Pod owners across American gathered in Lousiana and publicly burned and stomped on their collection of Porcupine Tree CDs, well, I reckon the marketing impact would be enormous!  -lol-

Once ran and bicycle-commuted (about 6 km) to work for a couple of weeks wearing a walkman.  Didn't like it all as it smothered up valuable information that was helping to keep me alive.  And yes, I do not own an i-Pod.  Burning MP3 files on a CD is cheaper.

I could read your column daily...you should have one Deadwing wrote:

The song is divided into 2 separate sections- 1st part is entitled Winding Shot, and the 2nd part is Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before it is Recycled. The 2 sections are very different stylistically (which you know of course )

The sampled voice during "Last Chance" is that of Marshall Applewhite (in his goodbye to Earth video)- the stellar nutbag behind the Heaven's Gate mass suicide in 1997 (remember the guys that thought their escape spaceship from Earth was behind the Hale-Bopp comet?)

I think Wilson uses the first part of the song to exemplify everything that is good, innocent, and positive about us as humans, and the second part to illustrate how very wrong things in the human brain can go- and that as a species we are capable of terrifying variations of behavior and perceptions of reality.

I have to disagree with virtually everything you say about Atlantic salmon farms off the coast of BC and the 'campaign'.

Agreed, the scientific rhetoric has improved.  The science has gone from amateurish bush league to somewhat better.  But the overall conclusions leave much to be desired.

Furthermore, there are strong indications that recent "data gathering" continues to be fraudulent.  Even opponents within the commercial sector who know the researchers involved do not believe the lice counts being reported on sockeye.

As for farmed Atlantic salmon tasting like "cardboard".....   Have you ever eaten wild Atlantic salmon?  (I would guess not.)  Are you sure that you are not getting confused with the taste of frozen wild coho salmon?  Do you actually eat fish on a regular basis or is this campaign a good pretext to avoid a food item you neither like nor understand like the vast majority of BCers?

xkolibuul, The rhetoric employed by the anti-salmon farm constituency is on par with some the worst excesses of the Bush II regime.

In the meantime, the commercial salmon sector is still overcapacity by a factor of at least 20; so-called employment insurance transfers top up commercial fishing income, and the Lower Mainland and southern Vancouver Island until the bust continued to develop at a fast clip laying down vast amounts of asphalt and concrete—effective impermeable surface.  But all those issues are tough to understand  and not sexy and really hard to exploit for fund raising purposes.

The biggest factor in the recent Pacific Coast salmon declines appears to be sea current shifts (upwellings) that have reduced the plankton at the base of the ocean food chain that feeds juvenile salmon.  Its not clear to what degree these shifts are becoming more permanent or just a temporary fluctuation during the past couple years.  Also not clear whether they are linked to climate change, but that's certainly a leading hypothesis.  Its a complicated system.

Hiya wolfy!

Just finished transcribing some notes from a conversation with a commercial salmon fisherman with 44 years of experience.

Salmon runs are collapsing up and down the coast from BC's mid-coast to California.

Temperature regime shifts me thinks.

I will definitely look into buying this album.  Thanks B&R!

If you go to KCs website https://www.dgmlive.com they actually have the August 7th, Park West Chicago performance available for DL for 12.95 USD. They thought it was an epic Crim performance too  {#Notworthy}  I've seen them probably 4 times (also Fripp with The League of Gentleman and solo, and Adrian Belew many times since he is from my hometown Cincinnati and was constantly gigging here while I was in High School and College) and every time was just wonderful, but this show was really special. They did a lot songs from Discipline and also quite a few off of Thrak. The Frippertronics during One Time brought me literally to tears.

What a night! And the 3 days we spent in Chicago were just amazing. We had an absolute blast!

The demonstrative adjective this, in my original post, pointed to the song Lighbulb Sun. My ambiguity.

================================

So what material from the King Crimson concert really blew you away?  I have figured out Discipline—I really like it—and am looking for a fresh Fripp/KC challenge.

In the same vein, I get Burningshed e-mails and find the menu rather overwhelming:

travis and fripp — thread

bass communion

nosound

No-man

I see Richard Barbieri is coming out with a CD entitled Stranger Inside

Deadwing,

Thanks for the explanation and interpretation.

For this song, I played with the notion that the lightbulb under the sheets was a metaphor for spaceship earth but what the heck do I know was running through Wilson's head?

Otherwise, I'm inclined to think that it was simply a joyous celebration of affluent middle class English life.

I was talking about "Last Chance To Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled"  Hope I didn't confuse you  {#Cry}

Yes, this CD is quickly becoming one of my favourite Porcupine Tree CDs.    9 => 10

Nice to catch it on RP.

What a fantastic album. I've hard to say if Lightbulb Sun or In Absentia is the best, but this album for sure contains some really good material that also was the songs that made me open my eyes for Porcupine Tree & Steven Wilsons music. Love the "Russia on Ice" track from this album.

I don't understand the lyrics to Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before It is Recycled. Nonetheless, the voice over punctuation is well done and some of the instrumental sections are nothing shy of incredible.
The song is divided into 2 separate sections- 1st part is entitled Winding Shot, and the 2nd part is Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before it is Recycled. The 2 sections are very different stylistically (which you know of course ) The sampled voice during "Last Chance" is that of Marshall Applewhite (in his goodbye to Earth video)- the stellar nutbag behind the Heaven's Gate mass suicide in 1997 (remember the guys that thought their escape spaceship from Earth was behind the Hale-Bopp comet?) I think Wilson uses the first part of the song to exemplify everything that is good, innocent, and positive about us as humans, and the second part to illustrate how very wrong things in the human brain can go- and that as a species we are capable of terrifying variations of behavior and perceptions of reality.
