I have seen where the wolf has slept by the silver stream
I can tell by the mark he left, you were in his dream
Ah child of countless trees
Ah child of boundless seas
What you are, what you're meant to be
Speaks his name, though you were born to me
Born to me, Cassidy
Lost now on the country miles in his Cadillac
I can tell by the way you smile, he is rolling back
Come wash the night-time clean
Come grow the scorched ground green
Blow the horn, tap the tambourine
Close the gap of the dark years in between
You and me, Cassidy
Quick beats in an icy heart
Catch colt draws a coffin cart
There he goes and now here she starts
Hear her cry
Flight of the seabirds
Scattered like lost words
Wheel to the storm and fly
Faring thee well now
Let your life proceed by its own designs
Nothing to tell now
Let the words be yours, I'm done with mine
I can tell by the mark he left, you were in his dream
Ah child of countless trees
Ah child of boundless seas
What you are, what you're meant to be
Speaks his name, though you were born to me
Born to me, Cassidy

One of the few artists that write meanungful complex lyrics on a number of subjects.

NO MORE VEGA - - Please!! Do you guys have shares in her?!? Every day we're subjected to the boring insipid dross. Now and agin is fine, but this saturation is becoming silly. STOP!

Huh? I thought the Cassady Bob Weir (and the Dead) sings about was Neal Cassady (a.k.a. Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's On the Road), Merry Prankster chauffeur extraordinaire and master stoned rapper.
But as Paul Harvey would have said, "And now for the rest of the story..."

Thank you for that - great story, and reading it somehow brought back memories of reading 'Ramparts' magazine and 'Rolling Stone' back in Wenner's heyday... Whew...
And, both the song and this performance are excellent...

That's not how it works. Bill plays what he wants and you either listen, hit the Play Something Different button or listen to a different stream.
Seriously, why would someone post a rant (in BOLD, with CAPS, formatting, and multiple punctuation marks!!!) instead of pressing PSD?

I remember one night, I believe in '91, at my favorite watering hole my mom called the bar to tell me that some tv station was promoting the album by playing some of the videos from it. She taped it on VHS for me. A fantastic album! And some of the proceeds from the sales went to a foundation for save the rainforest. I think my fav on the album is Lyle Lovett showcasing Friend of the Devil. Man, I miss Jerry and the boys! (~};-}
she really does a nice job of arranging songs...her own and other people

jerry today.....0h boy! Swell
One of my favorite tribute albums, and probably my favorite song on the album (after Bertha!)
love that cd. A friend borrowed it and I never got it back. I couldn't remember the name so now I have it for $.79. I am a dedicated Deadhead and love this CD
nice version ..... hard to cover a dead song for me.....
Awesome song
Hardly gets any better than Suzanne Vega covering the Grateful Dead
Nice version! This whole album is a brilliant collection of Dead covers...mostly 9's and 10's.
If you don't have this album, it is worth picking up if you can find it. I got mine years ago.
Also, the album is nice to throw on at a party. The non-Deadheads won't know what hit them! :-)

Thank you (again) RP for rediscovering Suzanne Vega for me: I had forgotten her for many years and now she is again alive and kicking on my musical repertoire.

I like this, but have to admit that I don't know the original version. You can definitely hear the Dead in the song, so I assume she kept it true to the original.
I thought I heard her say "Cassidy." Had to look to be sure. My daughter in law has a grandfather they call Cassidy. He was raised in Italy as an orphan, in the orphanage called "house of God" or "Casa Dia" or similar. He took the surname Cassidy when he left, and to this day, he is simply known as "Cassidy." Good man; he has barns full of tools and can fabricate or fix anything.
This disc is sitting on my desk, having just used it ten minutes ago!! (to fine tune ripping/naming in my ripping program (dbPowerAmp)). Always liked Los Lobos version of Bertha and Really like Hornsby's Jack Straw, And I'm not a Deadhead...
It appears to bring a pretty penny on the used market!

God. How many freaking Dead-head girls named their dog Cassidy? I'd swear, as sure as some guy on the back of a Greyhound bus is fresh out of rehab, you were sure to hear some dread-head running through the lot post show yelling for their lost dog.... "CASSIDY!!" Too funny.
Just say no.
Don't care much for Vega but I am going to have to explore this album.
Not being a huge dead fan, I can't compare this to the original. So standing on its own, I rather like it.
This is a kind version of a great grate ful song.
Love this version! Helped me confirm that I wanted to name my daughter Cassidy.
Dang. Twenty years after the fact and this is the first I've heard this. I knew of the album, but I never sought it out.
LOVE love love this. Always have. Check out some of the other tunes on this collection. Excellent, all of them.
her version of China Doll is most excellent. yes way, Ted.

I remember listening to this in college. I like the Elvis Costello Ship of Fools too.

I really like this version. I bought Deadicated after hearing it.

I love Suzanne Vega. I've seen her in concert twice, once full band and once acoustic; she's an excellent performer.
