Wrapped up in dissonance,
I'm sorry that I just walked away
Lost in the insignificance of mine,
I had no words to say
Now I am better, I implore you
To say it isn't right
But somewhere deep in history
Your father pulled your teeth out of your face
Hold it in, now let's go dancing
I do believe we're only passing through
Wired again, now look who's laughing,
You again, oh you, oh you, oh you
Hold it in, now let's go dancing
I do believe we're only passing through
Wired again, now look who's laughing,
Me again, all fired up on you
Now she's caught between
What to say and what she really means
And I am finally colouring,
Inside the lines that I live between
Wrapped up in empathy,
The chemicals are pushing passed my blood
Hold all my cliches on the tip of my tongue
To tell you that it's love
Hold it in, now let's go dancing
I do believe we're only passing through
Wired again, now look who's laughing,
You again, oh you, oh you, oh you
Hold it in, now let's go dancing
I do believe we're only passing through

Nice guitar sound, gritty but pleasant to the ear!

Lovely to see you try so hard Michael… to assert mediocrity and the error of central tendency.

There are only 13 tones in an octave. There are only a few hundred rhythmic patterns that are repetitive enough for song construction. Almost all music is derivative of a prior work, even if we can't identify the precursor.
Think about how many million songs have been created since cave women started crooning to their babies ... and the modern "derivatives" you decry that descend from 10th-century Byzantines, 12th-century Crusaders, 20th-century Mississippi bluesmen, or a 21st-century English post-punk band like Durutti Column.
(Wanna bet that Durutti Column uses chord progressions, melodies, and rhythms that are derived from someone else's earlier song?)
Ben Howard is either a derivative of, or homage to, or cover of, Durritti Column.

Wow, actually more soporific and amateurish than The National. Who knew that was even possible?

I sure like the intro. After a few listens though, I'm realizing that the whole song is the intro repeated. Hmm. Somewhat monotonous. Still like it though.
Love this. It's worth checking out live versions on youtube, where there are at least a couple very good ones.
Perfect at 5am this cold, wet Seattle morning. Goodnight ~

Boring crap.
2 much, 2 boring.
That gauzy sound...It's the sound of remembering, the sound of daydreaming...you're not there, but almost...wonderful...
I'm certainly acquiring a taste for his music as well. Oats in the water is sooo good. PermittedAloud wrote:
Very fresh songwriting here. I must disagree with those who dislike the hazy, distant sound; it's both obviously intentional and works very well. A unique and listenable piece.

I think the sound of the suppressed instruments work well, underlining the in between world of this verse.
Totally agree!

getting to like this song a lot but why is the rest of the band in the next room, would have sounded better if they recorded it in the same room as the singer
